About Me

  1. This thread is intended to differ from the M1 one by: Ooh, broadening the scope to all Macs Otoh, narrowing the focus on if a particular Mac Plays fine/Does not with regards to desirable settings My goal, and I guess it will be of interest to others, is to make an informed decision about the replacement (or not) of my MM1 8 Go RAM. With that machine I can, using convolution and, including Mch downfold to Stereo, ouput : • @ 256 SDM all PCM sources with rates up to 192 (384 untested) with 7EC Super and its 512 variant with satisfying filters ie Sinc MG/a or gauss hires lp Guess 512 and 1024 are desirable but no real frustration there • @384 PCM all PCM sources with rates up to 192 (384 untested ) with Sinc Long filter. That is frustrating and far from 1.5 M May (my DAC) capability that proves superior to lower rates with filters I could up that far. Yet with 1x sources it sounds good (I prefer SDM route and hires lp or Sinc MG with higher rates) • @128 SDM 64 SDM sources, (above and Mch : NO) with 7EC Light And source file has to be in a RAM disk and it’s not occasional glitches free That is very frustrating….. Plus I have RAM swapping almost all the time : I wonder if I would be so eager to churn a 16 Go RAM MM1… And you, what can you play with your Mac ?
  2. Does somebody know how it works? I've set the drive speed control (preferences>CD rip>Drive speed control) to 'Limit to 4x' (instead of automatic) but the ripping is done by approximately 10 to 12 x. I thought I limited the cd ripping process to 4x though. It doesn't matter if I set the ripper mode to CD Paranoia or XLD secure ripper.
  3. I'm doing a clean install on my music-dedicated mini and would like to know what is the latest and greatest of the optimizations I can do. Machine: - mac mini 2012, i7 quad, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD (Mercury 6G) - External HD over FW - Bridged networking: Thunderbolt/ethernet adapter bridged to internal ethernet - network switch to thurnderbolt, internal ethernet to dCS Rossini - LPS (Uptone JS-2) with internal mini MMK board - Run headless with one of those dongles in the HDMI port keep graphics alive (screen sharing very slow otherwise) OS: macOSX 10.14.4 (downloaded the 10.14.4 installer so this is my scratch starting point) Players: Roon (over network to dCS Rossini) Audirvana (not used much at the moment) I run installation last night and did all of the standard things like turn wifi, bluetooth off, disable spotlight, etc. I did NOT disable SIP so I cannot disable Notification services, etc. View on disabling SIP? Any recommendations? Thx.
  4. As a dedicated Apple user, which format should I select to download high-resolution music files? I have used other sites where the only option is FLAC. I have converted these files to use on my Mac and iPhone, but hate managing two different sets of the same songs. Often times I am in another location, non-mobile, but not at home when I am listening. I am trying out JRiver’s Media Center, which is a manageable price – streaming is not high on my priority list. If someone invites or wants me to listen to some songs, they are often provided in the FLAC format. Yes, I realize FLAC and AIFF are about the same, but iTunes still doesn’t play FLAC files. Hence, my trial before moving to JRiver. Any thoughts?
  5. Hello everybody, long story the shortest (...), I have a very vintage stereo system to whom I am finally going to add a DAC within xmas, got it as my present, the idea was to use an old MacMini as a music/movie server but found out that iTunes is very poor sound quality wise and the Mini is too old to run a recent software able to play lossless music (even tho there must sure be but I didn't look too much for one) and the Mini is a little bit noisy, no big deal but if I could take less space and less punch in the eye and being able to use a higher quality sound output software to then stream the music to the DAC I'd be happier. I know the Pi is a little powerhouse and saw many projects but the vast majority includes a DAC which I won't need so, to summarise, I only need a device capable to play music both locally (through a micro SD I suppose) and/or through a NAS and a software which can take advantage of high quality lossless music; I played with Audirvana for a little and I like it enough even tho some quirks, I haven't found a version to run on an old Mac OS but I'd like something similar whose interface can be run off a smartphone. Hardware wise, what does it take to arrange such a thing? Besides the Pi, which so far I seem to understand being on a Rev 3+, I guess a sound card with either optical/usb/output, is that correct? Any discussion to point me at so I can start and learn about it all? Grazie Giovanni
  6. Hi all, I haven't posted since this forum moved so hello again! I'm hosting a barbecue on Saturday that is likely to go on well into the night, so I have compiled a playlist of approximately 10 hours of music. I want to make sure that if I need to stop the playback and start it again, I don't want to hear the same tracks already played recently. In conclusion, I'd like to create a Smart Playlist that will only show songs that haven't been played in the last 6 hours. Unfortunately, the "Last Played not in the last" shortest option is 1 day. I considered the "Limit to XX items selected by least recently played" option, however that will mean the music will be skewed towards music I haven't listened to for the longest, which is not what I want, because that ends up grouping lots of a similar artist together and it won't feel very random. I tried entering a fraction for number of days, but it doesn't allow that. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get this to work? Thanks!
  7. There are articles online and in print that discuss the joys of using a Mac Mini as a music server. Just plug it in, the articles say. I am here to tell you that it is substantially more difficult than it sounds. My aim is to run the Mini "headless" and control it with an Ipad. I thought I would share a few issues that I have encountered with you and get the thoughts of the learned many who read these forums. Wake up. My Mini is part of a TV and music system that is controlled by the RTI system. It's easy enough to have the RTI bring up the Mini. But at that point, the Mini is asleep. It only needs a mouse click or a carriage return to wake it up but how do you do that? Right now, there is a mouse on my coffee table but that just doesn't seem right. I know this is not an RTI forum but does anyone have any ideas? Audio connection. As I said, I am trying to run headless. But sometimes you need a screen, especially when you are getting things up and running. The screen in this case is the TV for the system but perhaps in the future it would be a small monitor. The problem is, how do you run separate video and audio signals from the Mini? If you use HDMI for audio, which works great, by the way, then the tv has to be on. If you turn off the TV, then the audio goes away. Can I use the Thunderbolt port for video? Would I be happy with using the mini Toslink port for audio? That's it for right now. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Tim
  8. After doing forum research, I decided it was possible to stream Roon from my Mac to the Roon-Tested 280D. Now I'm looking for you experts to confirm/deny before I install the over $1600 of gear purchased to make this happen! Set-up - my Mac, now with Roon downloaded, is quite some distance from the Moon 280D and the listening room where its housed. So it is impractical or impossible to directly connect a USB cable from it to the 280D. Plan - I purchased the ultraRendu microcomputer to work as a go-between. It will be directly connected to my router. As I understand things, it would recognize Roon and pass it thru via USB to the Roon-tested Moon. Concern - Simaudio is only pushing a direct computer connection, which is what they evaluated in order to become Roon Tested. I'm sure Simaudio has not tested the ultraRendu or all the many other similar products to determine their usability with Roon Hope - In spite of that, I'm hoping the envisioned solution is a workaround that's been tried and tested by others, whether the ultra/microRendu was used as the Roon end point or not. Thank you in advance for you help.
  9. There are several shell-scripts floating around (including one I made many years ago) that turn off a vast number of lanchd processes for OS X, which often have the perhaps undesirable effect of completely hosing the system. As an alternative, I have been watching /var/log/system.log to find clues about what might be problematic, and what I want to do is selectively target a few "processes" by understanding what they do, and then turn them off individually, to see if there is any difference (audible, or at least in terms of spamming the log file). I'd like this thread to become a "hit list" of processes that are unambiguously useless. (In other words, I don't want to turn off wireless or bluetooth -- this should be up to the individual user, and is easy enough to do anyway). What I want to do is target a few problem children that are unlikely to have any utility, especially if they are broken, and understand what they do, in case I change my mind (or discover an unintended consequence).
  10. Hello, I installed the Dev Beta 2 of High Sierra today on a new partition... yes i have a backup I wanted to see if it was better for A+ with the new Finder coding and see if some bugs would disapear for me like the stoping of A+ playing for no reason for 1 or 2 seconds once a week. For me, A+ have still troubles like others before High Sierra with the System Optimizer installing at first... in fact, i had to put back my preferemces of Sierra to make it works again Direct Mode is out also as it is dead since Sierra. I didn't try to replace de .ktext again to make it work because SuperDuper couldn't see my hard disk formatted for High Sierra new scheme thing. Onyx doesn't work either at this stage to repair the permissions after... So i enjoy A+ 3.0.7 like it is now, HQPlayer 3 still works and JRiver 22 also. I putted back my A+ music database folder where it is supposed to be and my preferences for A+ software, and all was back like before with playlists included The best thing for me with High Sierra, is now i can use the keyboard like it was before Sierra... Making the folder you clicked disappear while holding the ALT key to just keep the next one you have selected... and so on, to just have only one folder at a time open in the finder while browsing my music hard disc. SO GLAD that it is back for me!! The Remote of A+ still works with my iPhone like before and my IOS application 'Remote Mouse' on the Mac and iPhone still control my MacMini on the TV with the iPhone if i want. Parallels Desktop is still working with windows 10 installed on Mac Mini... nothing to do with music but needed by me That's it for now. Enjoying music on High Sierra
  11. Wondering if anyone is connecting MacBook Air as a one computer config so one usb port is connecting to dac, and internal ssd as boot drive - whats the best sq solution in your experience: 1. Use another usb port for external hdd - ssd, or just a regular drive? I play mostly dsd; 2. Use the SD card slot and better sq or not? 3. Use thunderbolt external hdd, better sq? Audirvana manual recommends making sure the high speed usb port are dedicated to usb connection to dac, not sure if the 2 usb ports on macbook air is on same circuit thus shared, therefore am wondering if using the other connection options may imprive sq. Anyone can chime in on this? Thanks.
  12. I've used the iTunes artwork screensaver on my Macs of years and I think it's great, except I've had the same couple of dozen album covers for a looooong time now. How can I have it fetch more? I assume it caches a certain amount of jpegs, but I don't see a way to refresh. Maybe there's a cache file somewhere, or a folder that I don't know about. Any ideas?
  13. Has someone compared SQ of direct USB output from MBP/Audirvana to DAC vs. streaming to a device like Ultrarendu or USBridge with the same DAC and same USB cable ? Thanks Matt
  14. okay I have had an annoying problem using A+ to control an mr. my office system has remote drive-i-mac-audirvana-eitr-modi. My main system has ethernet-microrendu-usb-Gumby, controlled by a+ on the iMac. basically, I have occasions with no sound in the main system even though the microrendu is selected in A+. I confirmed that my computer is seeing the microrendu and the microrendu is seeing the Gumby. After much frustration, I was able to fix things by physically removing the connection between the iMac and the eitr and restarting. For the moment everything is working and I am able to toggle between systems by changing the output selection in A+. But it feels like there is an intermittent compatibility issue between A+ and eitr, where A+ at times will try to send a signal to the eitr, even though I’ve chosen mr as output. any other explanations?
  15. Okay - So I've tried many times to rip the high res audio from a blu ray on a MAC without success. I can get 16 bit but not 24. I have used make MKV - but then what? I get this big file I can't seem to use. I try DVD audio extractor but it won't pass the copyright. I've had people tell me its possible only to realize they don't own a MAC... its super easy on a PC - but MACs seem to block ripping or decrypting of these files... I've used a few used PCs to do this using DVD audio extractor with AnyDVD running in the background (this seems to be the magic potion) and its a cinch. easy-peasy. no fuss. BOOM. done. Unfortunately, I no longer have a PC as both died - and I have some big titles i want to rip for portable listening. so - drumroll please.... In lieu of buying a new PC laptop, is there a way to run windows on a mac and get the same result? OR has someone used a MAC successfully to easily extract blu ray audio... thanks so much for any feedback!!
  16. I have been using Audirvana+ Player (Mac OS) connected to my KEF X300A (Active Speakers) for years, playing mostly AIFF and WAV files. Recently the KEF speakers are no longer working, and I plan to replace them with my Cambridge Audio speakers. Since the new speakers are not active speakers, I will need an Amplifier for it and I am looking at Cambridge Audio CXA80. The question is, it seems to be that CXA80 has USB audio input and a WM8740 DAC chip, I believe I can connect it to speakers directly. Using Audirvana as player, do I still need to buy a DAC, or a network player, like DacMagic or CXN? What's the purpose for a network player (e.g. CXN) in my setup?
  17. My main music library is mostly FLAC, but I like to have AAC copies in iTunes. I found an automatic and free utility to do this, which although not updated in a long time, works fine with High Sierra and iTunes 12. https://github.com/cbguder/FLAC2iTunes
  18. Hi all Im looking for a cheap (sub £100) but good DAC that’s... - Mac compatible - Capable of playing back DSD 128 5,6Mhz .dff and .dsf files - Will also allow me to get the best out of my first pair of open back headphones (Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 ohms) Thanks
  19. I am struggling with the exclusivity option for the audio device in the Tidal app. I like it when a music app can claim exclusivity of the audio device on my MAC. I use Tidal app on MAC with MacOS High Sierra and OPPO USB DAC. In the case of JRiver, the JRiver app claims exclusivity when playing something and if one stops the music, the exclusivity is given up and other apps can use the audio device / DAC (Youtube, Chrome, Spotify, etc.). In the case of the TIDAL App on MAC, the app gives up the exclusivity automatically when another app/browser uses the audio device when launching the app and the settings in Tidal is set back to not exclusive. I have to check this setting all the time, as this happens often. Moreover, if Tidal has exclusivity it only gives the exclusivity up with closing the app and not when stopping playing the music. That is annoying. Any help to have a "JRiver" like experience with Tidal in the field of exclusivity?
  20. Just incase you missed it, Apple has added FLAC playback in High Sierra and iOS 11. This will make previewing music libraries much easier. Hopefully FLAC compatibility will be coming to iTunes soon too.
  21. XLD stalls with every new project with the current O/S update. Upon start up message appearsto the effect of: XLD is not optimized for MAC, the developer needs to update…
  22. Hello, members of Computer Audiophile Forum! I’m the founder of International Classical Music Database, a non-profit organization exists to promote, educate, and archive classical music (don’t panic, the discussed topic is not limited to classical music). We are looking for some pilot users for a new online service. If you’re a music collector or audiophile with a Mac computer, I believe our new solution “Tonal” could bring you a better music experience: With Tonal, your complete digital collection is organized in one place and is ready to be streamed anytime, anywhere. That may sound unfancy, but there’re three foundational innovations which clearly differentiate the Tonal experience from the competition: A managed cloud-based music locker service with audio quality verification built-in. An innovative metadata solution which focuses on standard, quality, and community collaboration. A well-crafted playback engine which ensures highly predictable audiophile performance. Download initial version: http://binaries.ton.al/app/Tonal-20180315.zip Anyone interested please read the introduction article: https://medium.com/tonal-app/introducing-tonal-74c748f200b9 And three separate articles explaining its internals: Audio Pre-Processing Music Metadata Playback Engine This thread will be monitored. Feel free to ask me any question. Screenshots attached:
  23. I'm going to have some basic questions, the first of which is about ripping. The articles in CA academy on ripping are 6yrs old. The "what format" is probably more accurate now than ever given the plunging prices of storage. However, while the overall strategy is probably still relevant, the software references seem very out of date. GD3's software still references Windows XP, Vista or 7, not exactly current and no mention of OSX. I'm on a Mac so obviously I can use iTunes to rip to AIFF. Is there some other software that is a superior solution? Thanks!
  24. Hi folks, Firstly, wishing everyone here a very Happy New Year's Eve tonight! I've only recently started posting here, and am really grateful for the expert advice so far. This new "problem" is one that's been bugging me for a while, and I'm sure I'm missing a simple solution! THE BACKGROUND I currently have my main "Hifi" (Macbook/Audirvana/Hugo/Amp/Speakers) setup in my Living Room, have my music housed on my home server (Mac Mini/RAID) in my Study Room, and sometimes also listen to music at my Home Theater setup (Mac Mini/Plex or iTunes/Bose LifeStyle 535), which also serves to pipe music throughout my home in ceiling speakers. Everything is connected via Gigabit Ethernet. My home theater setup is a simple one, just a TV and a Bose LifeStyle 535 V35 receiver connected to both a local 5.1 surround sound speaker set and also to my home-wide speakers (ceiling speakers). In addition to the Mac Mini running Plex or iTunes mentioned above, sources for this also include my Blu-Ray player, Cable TV, Satellite TV, etc, and a: Toslink Optical from an Airport Express, which in turn gets its input from my main Hifi setup in my Living Room via AirPlay from Audirvana Plus 2.0 (in standalone mode). THE ISSUES The music coming through my home-wide speakers via the above last setup (Living Room Hifi Audirvana -> Airplay -> Ethernet -> Airport Express -> Toslink Optical -> Bose V35 Receiver -> Homewide amps and speakers) is pretty crappy at the moment (very muddy across the entire range). Just to be clear, I control the music via the Living Room Hifi Audirvana, i.e., I set the Bose V35 Receiver to channel the Airport Express source in "passive mode" (that is to say I turn the Bose on, set the source, and then go back to the Living Room). While the Bose V35 and the home speakers aren't fantastic by any means, the "normal" quality (e.g. from the local sources - Blu-Ray or even the local Mac Mini running Plex/iTunes) is still much better than what I am getting from the above path from my main Hifi. POSSIBLE CAUSES 1. Lack of a discrete DAC in the above path? 2. Downsampling by AirPlay/Airport Express of all files to 44/16? 3. Ethernet cabling quality (the contractor was supposed to have used Cat 6 GigE cabling but I haven't been able to verify...)? POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS CONSIDERED 1. At the Home Theater setup: Insert a DAC between the Airport Express and the Bose Receiver - But will not fix the AirPlay/Airport Express downsampling issue. 2. At the Living Room Hifi setup: change the source of the music going to the Home Theater, from Audirvana/Airplay, to Audirvana/USD/DAC (I'm currently using a Hugo) - But how to get the signal from the Hugo to the Home Theater system? 3. At the Home Theater setup: Get something like an Auralic Aries, with input via Ethernet and output via Toslink optical to the Bose Receiver - But from what I understand, I won't be able to simply "play" my music from the Living Room Hifi Macbook/Audirvana (where I have all my playlists etc set up, and control via Parallels on my iPad), i.e., I am guessing that the Aries would only allow me to control it via its own specialized (Lightning) App, to connect to music on my Study Room/Mac Mini/RAID. Or am I mistaken here? Can the Aries be set up to simply act as a passive conduit between my Living Room/Macbook/Audirvana and the Home Theater/Bose Receiver - in essence an "upgrade" to my existing Airport Express/Airplay connection? YOUR ADVICE REQUESTED My apologies for the long question! However I would really appreciate any advice, as to which of the above 3 solutions would be best - or if there is another fix that I haven't considered! Many, many thanks in advance!
