About Me

  1. I am building a computer for HQPlayer and I wonder which is the best CPU (up to now) I should use. The options I look at are either intel 7th generation (6700k, 7700k), 8th generation (8700k) or 9th generation (x series). Is there a significant difference that makes any of them the best choice? I do want to maximize performance of up sampling to DSD512 with best modes (XTR) possible. It should be noted a good GPU will be in use as well (either GTX 1070 or 1080). BTW, if AMD has any competitive CPU that matches or even performs better it can be an option. I currently plan to go with 8700k but I am not sure if this is the right choice.
  2. Hi Trying to figure out if I can get IR control for Roon with HQPlayer I am wondering if the Flirc USB remote, https://flirc.tv/more/flirc-usb, can work with HQPlayer NAA and Roon The setup is: Audiolinux computer running Roon Core + HQPlayer Embedded Allo USBridge Signature running RopieeXL with HQPlayer NAA It is not clear to me if connecting the FLIR USB receiver to the Allo will act as a remote for the NAA (in which case it is useless, since the controls on the HQPlayer don't control Roon. Using them from the web interface causes Roon to lose control - which is what is expected, but useless) Or, Does the FLIR work as a stand alone control for a specific Roon endpoint- in which case I will be a able to set it up to control the HQPlayer endpoint which means it performs the same as the Roon remote application on a smartphone? Many thanks
  3. Sorry, I won't list all HQP filters and invite you to vote for you favourite resampling filters ; whoever has never varied casts the first such poll... We know it depends on content, moon, mood, etc. Personally, I got bored recently of such hyped filters as Sinc L or M. In Preferences I currently have ext3 for 1x (grip, transients, most energy at both low and high extremes) and mqa mp for Nx (reveals more humanity in vocals, balance in acoustic instruments, and generate the more foot tapping even with classical). I wish to be able in the future to compare ext3 to a minimum phase filter of the same quality ; I don't think such a filter (apodizing and not rolling-off too soon with 1xis) is available at the moment. Please note that the question addressed by this poll could belong as well to the preceding polls
  4. Part IV addresses delta-sigma modulators (Manual, page 23) For any of the preceding polls, we can find some technically driven suggestions by @Miska (convolution engine Add should be preferred to Save for it is lighter -- yet I prefer Save -- ; CIC SDM integrator should be a more rational choice with 128 source -- yet it's my favorite with 64 -- while any IIR is close and I don't like FIR ; Wide and Narrow SDM conversions are said by Jussi to be too close to call on the Roon forum with Wide having some rational with 128 source -- yet, with 64 sources (I don't have 128) and maybe biased by reading the Manual, I love narrow with piano since it densifies and center focus it, making it more palpable, much in the line of what PGGB does, while I love wide with most anything else, ie drums' reverberation in Cowboy Junkies's Trinity session SACD. This being, technically driven suggestions are much stronger when it comes to modulators ; roughly : if your computer/DAC can make/take it, go ASDM7EC (5EC with Sabre DACs). So, to make this Poll interesting I'll try to be not too straightforward... Multiple options are possible : ie DSD family + 512 Non EC over 256 EC

  8. I'm shopping for a DAC (second hand T+A DSD8 and Holo XXX??? on the short list ; feedbacks welcome) and wonder if different routes for PCM and DSD makes sense. I understand the logic behind upsampling everything to SDM with sigma delta DACs and that defeats the argument that most SACD have been PCM processed at one stage or another, that native pure DSD is a rare beast. But how about native PCM ? I have been looking for ADC as well and seems to me that all are Sigma Delta as well, at least nowadays. So, is there any logic in shying away from SD at DAC stage (that is using the R2R PCM route of a Holo or Denafrips) if most probably the PCM is of SD origin, having had its Analog to Digital Conversion made by SDM?
  9. Hey folks, I've done some reading here on AS and have seen the monumental audiophile PC builds. Sleek fanless chassis with solely solid state storage, LPSUs, and dedicated clocks/USB output cards. It's quite impressive. In my case, I am looking to build a LAN-enabled beast which will not be hosting any local USB audio equipment in the foreseeable future. If it does ever require direct USB output, I will add something like a PPA USB card with a dedicated OCXO clock and an external LPSU just for the USB output. For now, the system will solely and exclusively be serving audio over wired LAN to my SOtM SMS-200 Neo w/ battery power supply. Now, for the actual server, I'm hoping to set up an 8-bay chassis with an i7 7700k cpu and 16 gigs of ram. I will most likely need a SATA expansion card to support the increased number of storage bays, but that shouldn't be too bad to source. Would an OS like AudioLinux be okay to host this sort of storage setup while it runs roon server and hqplayer for me? Or will I have too much redundant re-set-up to perform every time AL is updated? As of right now, the only component I would need to purchase to make this happen is a chassis (like the Silverstone CS381B). I have tried AudioLinux and like it so far for its simplicity when serving music off of my SSD (haven't delved into RAMRoot or any other specific latency settings just yet). Will using AudioLinux on a roon/hqplayer server PC still make an audible difference? Will using AudioLinux on a non-hardware-optimized PC (No custom clocks, fna-enabled cooling, spinning hard disks, etc.) still make an audible difference over the network? Thanks for your time, Nelly
  10. Hi , the reason I started this topic was because of the question I had in my mind and couldn't find an answer elsewhere . I have a ifi nano idsd dac and because of firmware limitation (5.2 vs 5.3) I have to choose between MQA decoder or DSD256 in DoP mode . since I have a roon hqplayer setup , I wanted to ask if it is worth to stick with mqa and DSD128 DoP or it is better to use no-mqa and DSD256 DoP and upsample everything (mqa and non-mqa songs) with this setting in hqplayer ? p.s : Sorry for my rusty English 😬🙏
  11. I have been using Roon+HQPlayer combo with my audio setup on a Raspberry Pi 4b running NAA for a good several months until this issue came up recently... It occurs randomly - sometimes after a 5 minutes normal playback, sometimes 20 minutes. Totally unpredictable. Though it is not catastrophically fatal, any help or advice is appreciated. What I know is that sound coming from my headphones stops all in a sudden, playback time indicator in Roon and HQPlayer stops as well. If I immediately open HQPlayer's settings panel at this moment, I can see that the RPi entry in output device settings section disappears. But after closed the panel and wait for a brief period, say, 20 seconds, then open the settings again, RPi shows up normally as if nothing happened. Modify the setting for dac output and hit play button in Roon, then everything will work fine - until the next time the whole process starts. I looked into HQPlayer's log file and found that every time this issue occurs brings up an error: ! 2020/11/17 12:58:31 clNetMiniEngine::PushPCM(): clNetMiniEngine::SendStreamPCM(): clSocket::Send(): send(): Unknown error ! 2020/11/17 12:58:31 clHQPlayerEngine::Execute(): push to FIFO failed 2020/11/17 12:58:31 Stop request (reset) & 2020/11/17 12:58:31 Stop... - 2020/11/17 12:58:31 Network engine stopping... - 2020/11/17 12:58:31 Playback engine stopped & 2020/11/17 12:58:31 ...stopped ...Followed by these lines indicating that HQPlayer has lost connection to the NAA and cannot dicover it on LAN again in a short period: 2020/11/17 12:58:32 Network Audio IPv6 support enabled 2020/11/17 12:58:32 Discovery from 0.0.0.0 2020/11/17 12:58:33 Discovery from :: 2020/11/17 12:58:34 Discovered 0 Network Audio Adapters 2020/11/17 12:58:35 Network Audio IPv6 support enabled 2020/11/17 12:58:35 Discovery from 0.0.0.0 2020/11/17 12:58:36 Discovery from :: 2020/11/17 12:58:37 Discovered 0 Network Audio Adapters (more omitted) Switching to ipv4 in HQPlayer during this phase won't help. My PC is connected to RPi through an robust Ethernet cable so I suppose there is little to do with network connection. I have tried switching to another newly flashed MicroSD card as storage on RPi but unfortunately it didn't resolve the issue. Also tried executing sudo systemctl status networkaudiod on RPi and the output seems pretty fine with no problems.. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance..

I'm selling a Sonore ultraRendu network streamer in good condition (two small scratches on the top of the enclosure). This is one of the most versatile streamers on the market, having multiple output modes - including NAA for HQPlayer. I'm providing a Sonore DC-4 power cable, iFi iPower 9V wall wart adapter and an Uptone LPS-1 power supply. The LPS-1 is unfortunately working a bit hectic as of late, so I'm offering this as free. Optionally I can offer an Sbooster Ultra MKI 9V linear power supply for the ultraRendu. I'm providing original boxes to all components. I'm also providing two sets of SD cards with Sonicorbiter OS 2.7 and 2.8 separately. The price of the ultraRendu package (rendu+dc4+ifi+lps-1+2 SD cards) is 600 USD, additionally the Sbooster would cost 200 USD. Buyer pays shipping and PayPal fees. It is shipping from Europe.

  13. Hi All, I decided to completely re-write my iTunes to HQPlayer front end. The new version is attached. The interface for choosing preferences is now based on Obj-C. This has allowed me to present all prefs in a single window. Once your prefs are set you can choose to not show these prefs again. If you do that the only way to get them back will be to delete the .plist file in your ~Library/iTunes/Scripts folder. This feature was suggested by Carl for headless server operation. Thanks Carl and thanks also for your testing and feedback during this development. In case any of you are still using the old version, you will need to delete the .plist file produced by that version before using this one. All required files are now bundled with the single app, apart from that .plist file which must be produced by the app. The creation of temp files is now optional, if your files are in a format, such as '.aif' which is supported by HQPlayer. I haven't got around to revising the manual yet. Hopefully though it's fairly self explanatory and you'll all be able to figure it out. Geoff iTunes - HQPlayer Server.app.zip
  14. My HQPlayer 4 Desktop works fine in W2019 Core. But I can't start the client. Everytime I enter the exe command, it ended and nothing happened. Did I miss something? My other question is can I run the Client elsewhere and connect to the server in W2019 Core. It didn't seem to work. Cheers.
  15. Only "civilian level" pc knowledge skills, by no means a computer whizz. I use ROON for Streaming Qobuz and my small collection of flac files on a usb drive. My current setup is an Intel i5-7500 pc @3.4GHz with 16GB ram & NVidia GTX 1060 (my general purpose living room pc which I use for browsing, Netflix etc) running Win10 pro. This currently runs my ROON Core and usb connected to my SMSL M8A usb dac & a trial version of HQPlayer. I have now just got a NUC8i7BEH on which my son installed ROCK (not yet put in hifi rig). Also now have just got a RPi4b for RopieeeXL. I think I understand how to install Ropieee XL on the pi and will try tomorrow. Using XL cos of my Spotify playlist and great music suggestions & it has the HQP NAA. 1) Should I first get the pi up and running first with my pc and only then transfer the CORE to the NUC? i.e. change one part of the chain at a time. 2) When the pi and NUC are up and running, I would like to use HQPlayer on the PC. What will be the limiting factor on the pcm and DSD rates I can stream to my DAC (pcm 768, native DSD 512 capable)? Is the pi the limitation or can it stream via usb to my DAC whatever I can upsample via HQPlayer on my pc? I have a Holo Audio May L2 DAC on order and am trying to get my system up and running before it arrives and "learn" HQPlayer to get the best out of the DAC. Thanks for any help and my apologies in advance for any equally dumb follow up questions and time delays in responding as there's up to a 8 - 12h time difference. Cheers
  16. I've just completed the process of putting together a dedicated machine to run Roon + HQPlayer. I'm upsampling everything to DSD 512 (which I feed into a T+A DAC 8 DSD). The OS is W10 (Enterprise) and I've already removed a lot of applications which I will not be using (like One Drive, Skype et al). In this context, and while I'm in awe with the SQ, I would like to get the last drop of performance and Fidelizer or Audiophile Optimizer seem to be the most widely used options. Which one do you think will work best with W10? Thanks!
  17. Hi, I wonder if someone could provide a step-by-step guide to achieving room correction using REW and HQ Player. I tried to find a tutorial but the information is scarce and spread all over the web... It's been years since I last used REW to measure the frequency response at the listening spot. I have a mic, REW and I'm ready to go. Thanks, Ricardo
  18. Hello, I'm interested in trying HQplayer and using my RPI2 as a NAA device. I tried finding answers to these questions but failed, I apologize if this is too basic... 1. Which version of the NAA demon suits the RPI2? Jessy? AMD? 2. Is there a way of controlling the HQplayer running on a windows server with an iOS app? Perhaps a third party one? Thanks you!
  19. Dear Audiophiles, I've been using fb2000 for long time, just try HQPlayer for few days. I have a strange problem when playing DSD64 file. - When play on HQPlayer version 2.8.0, uncheck DirectSDM, filter = poly-sinc-short-mp, modulator= DSD5, rate = 5644800 , mode = SDM (DSD), the sound is very good - On the latest version 3.19.1 (same PC) also uncheck DirectSDM, filter = poly-sinc-short-mp, modulator= DSD5, rate = Auto , mode = SDM (DSD), the sound is so terrible. My GPU is nVidia GTX 1060 3GB. Do you know what the problem is and how to solve it?
  20. Hi All, I have for some time now been considering designing a DAC that is capable of only one sample rate playback - so as to optimize the circuitry for this particular sample rate. Yet, to make this feasible in practice I will have to use my computer to perform the sample rate conversion from any and all of the sources that I would like to play. And this may include tidal, CD, youtube, the National Danish Radio, etc ... I have previously asked Miska (the HQPlayer developer) if it would be possible to stream music from these sources using HQPlayer as the "sound data handler" towards the USB-to-DAC converter, and his reply was affirmative - this is doable. I wonder, though: - how simple/easy it is to set up a "streaming system" on the computer, i.e. is it also simple/easy to add new music sources (e.g. tidal)? I much prefer it to be simple so that I can enjoy the music instead of having to focus on the technical aspects. - what it requires in terms of software (preferably only a software & USB-to-DAC solution) besides HQPlayer ... (Roon, JRiver, something else)? Again simplicity and an intuitive use is key. - How stable it is ... That is does such a setup often experience interrupts, drop-outs, or some other "issue" that interferes with music listening? Besides the single sample rate DAC another option is a DAC that is capable of sample rate switching - like what a normal DAC does ... I just happen to be intrigued by the single sample-rate DAC - and before deciding which path to take - would like to hear if someone here has experience with such a setup from the perspective of reasonable simplicity & stability in practical use ... Cheers & thanks for any insights Jesper
  21. What is a good approach to listening to DSD files (.dsf mainly) with a Chord DAVE? Edited: (my error in setting things up).
  22. Apologies if this question has been asked before but can I have the recommended settings For hqplayer upsampling of pcm to dsd with the t&a 8 dsd dac Thanks
  23. I accidentally contacted the HQPlayer player software seven years ago. By using the understanding, it is considered that HQPlayer is the best way to improve digital audio playback. At the same time introduce this software to more Chinese friends. No matter what DAC you use, you can get upgrades and get your favorite tastes through settings. For HQPlayer to get the best playback, a powerful computer and a unique DAC are a must. A comprehensive and correct understanding of DSD is the key. The various audio format files supported by HQPlayer are the best choice for DSD512 output. After a period of exploration, I finally formed my hqplayer playback system. The DAC that chooses HQPlayer is very particular. Because HQPlayer has full digital audio processing, the DAC chooses a DSD DAC that does not have digital processing and supports DSD512(NOS DSD DAC). After the comparison, it was decided to DIY such a DAC, and the optical fiber was used as the main transmission method. The computer comprehensively considered computing power, power consumption and cost performance, and chose X99 motherboard, E5 2698v3 CPU, 16G memory and GTX1060 6G graphics card. Adjust settings in auto rate family mode to output DSD512 smoothly. Some filters mainly rely on the CPU frequency, and some filters must have GPU assistance. Install the win10 workstation system.Connected via network fiber and DAC. The computer is remote from the DAC and physically isolates various interferences. The remote control uses an Android tablet or an Android phone.Install the HQPDcontrol APP. All digital audio files are edited with mp3tag software. It is very convenient to remotely select songs. HQPlayer 4 Pro has been born to directly generate the required digital audio files, real-time playback is not limited by the capabilities of the computer. The file will be generated first, and then the playback will have a big improvement. The playback device can be a digital audio player, a low power computer or a Raspberry Pi development board. It is the direction of future playback of digital audio.
  24. Dear all, I'm running HQPlayer in combination with Roon and Tidal on Windows Server 2016. (Total set-up: ASUS ROG I7 / WS2016 / FP / AO / Roon Server / Tidal / HQP / Singxer SU-1 / Gustard X-20 Pro). Since the latest Roon update (1.6 build 401) playback stops after the first track. The status bar in Roon is not moving at all and stays on the start position. With previous releases I've never had this issue. From several tests I learned that the set-up does work properly when HQP is installed on Windows 10 but not when it is installed on Windows Server 2016. Are other users running these programs on Windows Server 2016 experiencing the same problems? Looking forward to your reponses, Benno
  25. I plan on building a PC which will be used as a source for my DAC. Initially I planned on doing a fully fanless PC, but due to the HQPlayer's processing requirements I will have to go with Nvidia Pascal which has a fan. Hopefully there is some version which comes with a "silent" fan. So, I basically made a list of components, but I am not sure if all this will work together and if someone could check the list and/or add any suggestion I would appreciate it. Here we go: 1. Case: Streacom FC5WS EVO This is a fanless case which supports CPUs with 65W TDP 2. Power supply: HDPLEX HiFi 300W DC-ATX + Dell 330w da330pm111 3. Motherboard: GA-Z270MX-Gaming 5 This board has USB DAC-UP 2 feature which is suppose to have less noise. Not quite sure I understand it, though. 3. CPU: Intel 7th i7-7700T Has TDP of 35W which could be useful given the size of the case 4. RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR Platinum Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 memory kit (CMD32GX4M2B3000C15) I randomly selected this one on Amazon. Would you suggest anything else? 5. HD: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM) Also, randomly selected on Amazon. Should I go with M.2 disk instead? 6. Graphic: One of the Pascal series, either 1060, 1070 or 1080. I would certainly want to have the one which is most silent. As the case is fanless would it make sense to remove the fans and add heat sinks or this wouldn't work? Also, the case specification reads: Riser Card Required. Could someone send me a link what exactly this is? And this would be it. Am I missing anything here? Thanks and cheers!!!
