@Miska helped me figure out what was disabling my volume control, and I am happy to report that the volume control in HQPlayer does indeed sound wonderful!

sure, I had set Direct SDM mode in DSD settings because I’m not upsampling DSD. That disabled the volume control. Unchecking that allowed me to use the volume control.
