The autograph copy of Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 indicates this instrumentation: Quote 2 Corni di Caccia, 3 Hautb è Bassono, Violino Piccolo concertato, 2 Violini, una Viola col Basso Continuo Personally, the Brandenburg concertos are among the earliest German examples of concerti grossi. Some unusual instruments are in the mix, the violino piccolo in #1 for example. Restringing a non-full size modern violin might be possible, but it's still unclear exactly how it's done. So one is always wondering what's been done to the 3rd movement of #1 for a particular performance. In #6, the viola got pushed to the front while the viols got sent to the background, which is highly unusual. And the extremely short solo keyboard passage between 1st and 3rd movements in string concerto #3 is quite odd. Etc, all kinds of interesting twists and turns. In any case, album of yesterday evening: Horatius Flaccus, Paulus Diaconus/Guido d'Arezzo: The Mystery of Do-Re-Mi Christopher Gabbitas, David Miller ... origin of solfeggio. DeathFugue
She has added so many notes and ornaments that these are new pieces. I enjoy them, as well as her arrangements of Bach's Violin Sonatas and Partitas. Very close, clear sound. I was quite impressed by these recordings, the orchestra sound is particularly glorious. Link to comment

I'm not an expert, but these clearly are well thought out performances. Maybe not everyone's perfect execution, but it's silly to say they aren't good. The sound has what I'd call, in a good way, "solidity": it's powerful, tone is good. you can hear all the detail, there's good spread and layering of the instruments, yet the orchestra sounds like a unit. The perspective is of an audience member - it's not in your face. I sometimes like a "closer to the front row" perspective, but this is still a very enjoyable sound. Musicophile
Beethoven here as well, but with a much smaller ensemble on a surprisingly nice new release, and a very interesting piano (Pleyel) sound by Angelich. The Rattle box mentioned above is ok IMHO. A bit middle of the road, but there is much worse recordings out there.
