Give logic a shot.  But to help you, Steve Hoffman is saying even though he remixed the first Doors album, "several times", Steve's work "bites" in comparison with the original.  (I assume you are familiar with the term "bites".)

 

And for @Ralf11, your thought experiment was a failure.  Steve said he preferred a version not his own, but no censoring was evident...yet you said "any comment stating a preference for a different version is censored".

I promise you Hoffman NEVER EVER "remixed" the first Doors album. He also claimed to have remixed several Beatle live releases, then later claimed to have just "heard" the master tape.

 

Bruce Botnick would NEVER EVER allow the multitracks out of his sights. He was asked about this and claimed no one ever touched those tapes but him. The 2 track mixdowns were liscensed out to DCC and to Analogue Productions..for CDs, and SACDs/ LPs.

What may be being sorely missed is how diluted and overexposed The Doors catalog got when someone threw open the gates on it to make a quick buck.  Anyone with inclinations towards remixing or playing with digital files had their go at "sound biting" the life out of multiple hits.  I do mean anyone and everyone from kids with their first computer mixing software to professionals.  Without even needing to hear the SH touched versions.  I would agree with his sentiment towards them and move along.  The world is a big place with lots of ways to cash in on ones recognized place in it that don't look so good in the rear view mirror.   

 

In your always forceful attempts to sway others.  Ask what would actually support the need to craft a well informed opinion or, bereft of that, hold one's peace on the matter.  Which would in fact lead to a decline of needless shit stirring and charging into battle half cocked with a head driving out the sense that would preclude whatever action is currently being undertaken.  Not that this is aimed directly at you alone.

Again I say, who cares? It seems all you want to do is trash Hoffman. No one here is saying he is anything other than a flawed human being. You started out trashing how he runs his forum and now you want to trash the man. We get it. You don't like anything about him. I don't care.

 

All I know is that I have found his forum to be an incredible source of information that has increased my enjoyment of music more than any other I have visited. Do I believe everything I read there? Of course not. But, for the most part, the members are generous in sharing their honest opinions and perspectives. I am not going to take a negative view of the place just because Hoffman is a flawed human being.

I too have gotten a lot of use from the combination of the Hoffman forum and Discogs.com.  For virtually every recording there are a surprising number of masterings that have been done—some of which really suck and some of which are terrific (and frankly, the “audiophile” remasterings often fall in the latter camp).

the POINT is, Hoffman, a multi millionaire, uses his forum for personal gain, yet begs for donations...and offers no accounting..

True, Doug Sax did the mixing on the first Doors debut Album.

The wealth of information available on the Hoffman forums with regards to CD versions and different masters has been invaluable to me.  None of it was ever from the forum namesake but from it's members.

 

How he runs and finances the forums is his business, not mine.  I'm just happy to have the resource available.

An anonymous member comes in here and starts a thread to personally cast aspersions on the moderator of another audio forum. How is this relevant to Computer Audiophile, and why has the thread been allowed to continue? No one here is benefitting from this.

The Hoffman Forums are the best source that I have found for information about the sound quality of various recordings, different masterings, etc.  This information is very important to me, and I am grateful to the Forums.  Information from the Forums (together with listening, of course) has helped shape my music library.  In most cases, the information comes from other Forum members rather than the Host or a Gort.  The Forums are stronger for analog sources than digital, but has information for both.

Steve Hoffman's forum is by far the most significant and useful existing resource for exploring, debating, and recommending music based on the sound quality and aesthetic value of various masterings on various formats. By far. Just do a search for SQ information on any recorded music, and the most relevant helpful links that appear likely will be SHF threads. 

 

And it's free. The annual nagging for contributions to keep it ad-free is minimal and easy to ignore, if you're so inclined.

 

I value the volunteer work  of the moderators and especially appreciate the well-enforced ban on political discussion and bickering. It's a place I appreciate ducking into when the feeling of being poisoned by the horrible news and viciousness rampant elsewhere on the Internet becomes too painful, and I want to take refuge in discussion about the pleasure of music and how to enhance it. The tradeoff between restrictive rules and a relative lack of toxicity and troll callout culture is totally worth it IMO. The ability of cynical, preening OPs to launch and dominate angry, insulting, vindictive put-down threads at the SHF is severely limited in ways that I approve.

 

I'm also a complete fanboy regarding Hoffman's own mastering work. My personal taste and what his mastering offers is a perfect overlap. My introduction to Hoffman came when he and Chad Kassem presented a session about his beautiful SACD version of Nat King Cole's Love Is the Thing at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest — one of the most positive and inspiring experiences in audiophile joy I've experienced. 

 

The quality and depth of my music library and the pleasure I get out of it has been immeasurably improved due to what I've learned and been taught through the wisdom and help I've gotten at the forum.

I disagree! The animus of one poster has probably made many people here aware of the value of Steve Hoffman’s forum. Until I found that forum I was not fully aware of how varied the quality of masterings indeed were. I am sure others were/are in the same boat!
