It's too bad that the 4th Ballade was recorded in a different location and on a different instrument: the sound isn't as good as the other three, but his playing is still magnificent.

Right up there with the Vanska Mahler for delivering on expectations of breath taking performance.  I've always wondered if Bell enjoys his stops up here or if it's just another faceless city.  Both he and Yo-Yo Ma give faceless turns on this recording.  As does the other soloist, composer Edgar Meyer.

Blues, African style. There is also a bit of fusion thrown in as well.

 

Some of the best world music set to the blues/blues rock guitar makes for some excellent music, even if you don't understand the lyrics.

 

Tinariwen gets the nod, especially after the genius of Ali Farka Touré for some of the best world/fusion/African music in recent times.

Telemann (and a brief piece by Hotteterre): Music for recorder and chalumeau. Played with zest by Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico.

 

The sound is vivid and, as often happens with period instruments, occasionally a bit harsh. A 24/96 Qobuz 'Promo' download.

It really is. Although, after being impressed with the look of the waveform, I'm now realizing something's really wrong with the sound quality of that Bandcamp version – like it's a low quality stream or something – proceed with caution. I had only really listened to the Apple Music version before.

That's odd, I bought this from HDtracks and it's 24/44.1. Had to be a sample rate conversion in there one way or the other.

Yeah. That's the highest quality version sold on Qobuz and 7Digital as well. The Bandcamp page for the album now seems very fishy to me as the the official band website doesn't appear to contain a link to it. Somebody may have literally put up a recorded stream there. I've contacted Bandcamp's support to see what they have to say about it and am now listening to a 16/44 version bought elsewhere that sounds great (although with a somewhat limited dynamic range).

Another Gramophone Early Music finalist. Well done historically- oriented presentation. Recommended for Anglophiles and specialists. The main attraction for me is  John Dunstaple's Missa Da gaudiorum premia. Dunstaple is a key transitional figure between music that sounds medieval and music that sounds like the renaissance. He did a lot of exploration with musical triads.

 

This would not be in my top 5 albumes in this category, but it is very good for what it is.

Funny how the sex of most sought after recording/performing violinists has shifted in the last 50 years or more.  A Westernized nit to pick for sure.  This was quite good enough to distract that thought until posting here.  Very unique playlist arrangement in this live recording.

Excellent recording, Ann Wilson is in prime form. Barracuda is still a signature tune, and it has the live recording of Stairway to Heaven, making the reissue an even better deal.
