Official Qobuz Issues Thread

In some of the more recent posts, I've heard the Qobuz Windows desktop app referred to as "garbage" and "poor." David Craff and the Qobuz team showed remarkable poise and restraint in their replies.

I realize that this is an issues thread, but I felt like I had to respond with some praise. In my opinion, the app is the opposite of those terms. I think it's spectacular. It's gorgeous to look at, with expert use of typefaces, imagery, and white space, and generous mouse targets. I think it really romances the eye.

The artist bios and album descriptions are enthralling and well-written. The Discover section is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, with the Panoramas, the Taste of Qobuz, and carefully curated genre playlists.

And technically, as an app, it works well for me. It's quick and responsive, makes proper use of Windows 10 navigation conventions and notifications (I'm looking at you, Roon), starts up reasonably fast, and (again, for me) it's been very reliable. And finally, most importantly, it sounds lovely.

After experiencing Rhapsody, Spotify, Deezer Hi-Fi, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music HD, Audirvana, and YouTube Music, the Qobuz desktop app is my favorite of them all.

Good to hear. I’m curious as to why the web player seems to have been disabled though. I also think the IOS app needs improvement. At least it plays solidly though.

Hi, I don't know if this has been brought up before (nothing came up in a search of the forum, but that search could well have missed something), but if the Qobuz folks could please have a look at this and let us know if there's anything to be done - talk to the label, perhaps?  Here's the DR Database page for Steely Dan's Gaucho; please note where the Qobuz version comes in regarding dynamic range: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/dr/desc?artist=steely+dan&album=gaucho

Wow that's bad. And surprising.

Every Qobuz Apps needs improvement. And we are aware about that.

Surprising in that...

a) comparison was not done against the file provided to every other streaming service.

b) in building the catalog from scratch every best known version of every album wasn't initially sought out.

c) [traditional joke option redacted to avoid now obligatory modern offense posts in response] :)

Though Qobuz is the only streaming service represented in DR Database for Gaucho (and I believe it would be a test of the downloaded file), there are two reports for HDTracks downloads that have pretty much the same heavily compressed dynamic range numbers. It looks like the label provided a compressed download version, versus the much less compressed version provided for pressing discs.

On further examination, "a much less compressed version for pressing discs" is inaccurate. The download appears to come from the DVD-A version, if DR Database is a reliable indication.  The versions for other discs (CD or SACD in various flavors) look to have much better dynamic range.

This may be a bug, or just an annoyance for me:

(I'm talking about the desktop app. I haven't tried this with the web app.) Let's say I'm in a playlist, and I navigate away from that playlist for any reason. When I return to the playlist by hitting the Back button (or via any other method), Qobuz doesn't go back to my previous location in the playlist. It always goes to the top of the playlist.

When I'm in one of my long "new music" playlists and I navigate away to read about the artist or a related artist, for example, it's a pain to scroll down the playlist to find where I was before. It's similar to the previous problem of the playlist zipping to the top when I deleted a song from the playlist; David Craff and his team fixed that one in the very next update after I pointed it out. I hope they can fix this one!

I have Sonos speakers and I’m on Qobuz Studio. Does 24-bit HR streaming need any settings changing on the Sonos app? I found this https://www.qobuz.com/profile/externals but it doesn’t seem to work

Maybe you might want to take a look at https://darko.audio/2021/03/hi-res-streaming-comes-to-sonos-via-qobuz-sort-of/. Sounds like there is more information on your problem in that article. Myself, I don't have Sonos speakers - no experience of my own.

But you're the one who wrote a few days ago that well get a new version of the apps with a new Chromecast handler

Yes I manage the GoogleCast Receiver. But don't manage the content of the Mobile APP. I can ask the dedicated PM but can't do that every time.

So I dare to suggest an improvement for Qobuz to implement. AFAIK, this thread is the (only?) official place to file issues with anything related to Qobuz (besides writing e-mails to support which by the experience of many customers is not overly helpful). It might be very helpful if ALL responsible product managers (by app / operating system, music contents, textual publications) could read this thread regularly, respond in due course according to their field of work, and keep track of issues / solutions. This would eliminate the ping-pong game that takes place here all too often, where @David Craffis almost the only one taking all the load. Thanks for your consideration.

I have now found it:-

SD card > Andriod > data> com.qobuz.music > files > Music > Import cache

There are 15773 files covering 353 albums; I normally download whole albums in Mp3.

This means that each album needs 45 files, on average?

I wonder if this can cause problems e.g each file will need a header so repeated a number of times per track.

Can't Qobuz store data in larger files?

@athegn: You have hit one of the internals in the Qobuz Android App, which could be called ”legacy burden“, ”technological debt“. This issue is the so-called ”chunk file method“, whereby offlined contents and the online cache are stored as lots of tiny (2 MB) chunk files. Please refer to the previous posts here:

It would be great if you could help in following up on this flawed concept and on the solution which is supposedly on its way to us.
