I think I'm bored with audio now.

I agree entirely.

My favourite subject is street photography and responsiveness is crucial...

I quite like this image, however I've always wondered about comparisons between a medium-format digital image and the same image photographed on a medium-format camera using Kodak Technical Pan 120/220 film:

My bet is on the Tech Pan!!!

IS is not effective when you are photographing moving subjects.

For freezing movement you have to use high shutter speeds and this defeats the need for IS.

I disagree. It's useful if you want some motion blur or if you're tracking a moving object. Case in point, the boat photo I posted earlier.

I wouldn't trade IS for high ISO performance.

You want both.

I used to have a Mamiya C330 outfit with all of the lenses they ever made for it as well as the poro-finder and two bodies. Big and bulky yes (twin-lens reflex with interchangeable lenses. That means each lens was actually TWO lenses - a "taking" lens as well as a "viewing" lens. It took great pictures, though. Really spectacular stuff with that big 6 X 6 film area. It got to the point where every time I went out, I thought to myself, "Do I REALLY want to haul that lot with me today?" More often than not, after the "new" wore off, the answer was a resounding no!

Umm... Where's your Paramender parallex corrector :)

Yes, the C220/330 is a neat system. I have a 220 and used the 55/4.5 on it a lot. Kind of a poor person's wide angle Rolleiflex. But at heart I'm a view camera person:

And always will be--one of the reasons why I'm so big on Canon TS-E in the digital era.

What camera is that?

I must admit I struggle to see why as a non professional anyone would want medium format, unless you're planning for very large prints. But maybe it is because I never tried it myself.

I've never owned one, but considered it back in film days because they were capable of gorgeous images accurate down to fine details if that was what one wanted.

Yes. I suppose it's more accurate to called it F-Classic now. 2x3 means it's the medium format form. Takes 6x7 or 6x9cm rollfilm back as well as 2 1/4 x 3 1/4" sheet film.

I must admit I struggle to see why [...] anyone would want medium format [...]

For sure :D Who would want medium format when one can have one of these:

The image looks different, has different depth of field, the lenses can be absolutely awesome, and the ability to blow up and crop an image is much better than with a smaller frame or negative/positive.

Chris,

We have cameras with 50 plus megapixels now.. we can do a lot more with them....

I'm a 35 year old pro ( not my age!) and now digital rule.. ( like Vinyl and digital)

I hear you, but megapixels is only one part of what makes resolution and the look of the final product. Just like sample rate doesn't say much about sound quality :~)

The depth of field is the big different and as a result creates a different look.

The ability to blow up an image is down to the resolution which can be achieved with digital now.

To follow up what @jvlata said and Chris' reply ... the number of sensor sites (megapixels) is like the recording resolution; the rest is like the decision of how many microphone and what types; how much processing you are going to apply post recording, etc. And those decisions are often made depending on the subject you are photographing (recording). Its actually why more advanced cameras are not that suitable for a lot of amateurs ... amateurs tend to turn their mind to many different subjects while a professional specialises so buys what is best for their subject matter.

But at the end of the day ... the biggest difference is in the photographer (IMO). The thought process works different with medium format (and especially with large format) cameras.

Larger sensors allow more photosites of similar size and this means larger images, more resolution, more margin for cropping, larger blow-ups, less noise, narrower depth of field.

The downsides are size and weight and cost of camera and lenses, larger files, slower processing, narrower depth of field.

It's a matter of choosing whatever compromise best suits one's needs.

Well, "need" is a very relative term for any hobby anyhow. I can certainly grasp the concept of "want" though...

For me, the Fuji X100T with it's APS-C sensor and the 35MM prime is the perfect "always on me" camera, I'm not sure I'd be lugging around a medium format camera with me that often.

The photography guys can talk about the quality of the picture, it was taken from well over 100 feet away, the photographer had a massive lens on his camera. As for me, I'm focused on the line, slip angle, rotating the car, and setting up the next straight.

Beautiful. The photo is great, too ;>)

Fantastic color, but the eye contact really makes it.

Yes eye contact and open smile that captures fold in center of tongue. Would be great in black and white too even if much of that celebration is about color. I'm a black and white and shades of gray lover first and foremost. Eighty-five or more percent of my film collection is black and white. These days many think of black and white film/photos as something thankfully left to old people. There's magic in black and white. Frustrating those who don't watch black and white films because they aren't in color. Bad. English-only speakers who don't watch foreign films with subtitles because it requires scintilla of mental effort on their part. Bad plus.
