On the original album,3 of the songs are from that performance. 20 minutes ago, The Computer Audiophile said: My guess is the actual live sound of that performance was terrible. Not at all. They had everything miked and connected directly down into the boards in the studio in the basement of the Apple Building. It was released not long ago as "Get Back - The Rooftop Performance" 1 hour ago, The Computer Audiophile said: Are they supposed to sound like live performances? The original idea was to practice and write songs that would be practiced and played live in concert. It was all supposed to be climax for a live TV performance at the end. The album was supposed to be them "live" - that is, without overdubs, etc. The Get Back sessions docu shows a lot of this. The whole reason it was originally filmed was to get material for the TV show. They eventually gave up on the idea for the TV special and live TV performance, and the rooftop was a substitute. The original album was supposed to sound "live" as it would be with no overdubs, etc. The Beatles didn't want to deal with the many, many hours of tape/video and shelved the project. It was revived several months later (after Abbey Road was recorded), and it was decided to make a movie for theatrical release to recoup something from the whole project. For the movie they decided to use some sequencies from the docu that hadn't resulted in finished songs. So a new vocal for "For You Blue", and more work on "I Me Mine" was done in Jan 1970 to produce finished songs suitable for the album and Let it Be movie soundtrack. Immersive audio has really changed my perspective in more ways than one. In this case, I just don't care anymore about trying to determine the original intent of artists 50 years or 50 days ago. I don't think it even gets us as listeners anywhere, other than into interesting conversations. We think we know, based on a few published quotes, but in reality I wouldn't bet a bitcoin on any of this. Plus, as an audiophile, I just want to accurately reproduce what's on the commercial release, no matter what that is. It may feel good to believe we have the "definitive" version as the artists intended, but the reality is it's just a different version in 99% of the cases. Back to listening. Now playing ... Pretty much agree. We have whatever has been released and that's all. It's pretty clear that lots of albums have no one way they are "supposed" to sound. Folks are still discussing what performances of Bach, Beethoven, etc., are most definitive or correct centuries later, so I don't think it will ever be done. Sometimes comments along these lines can be entertaining in the Album of the Evening thread, often in comments to a "The Best Version Of..." article, or perhaps in their own separate threads.
