The persistent use of cannabis before age 18 has been linked to lasting harm to intelligence, according to a large study.

Lasting IQ harm from teen dope use - National - NZ Herald News

It would be interesting to see how persistent use was defined.

I can do one better than that...

I can personify persistent use.

The thing with drugs is that there is always a price to pay. Most of the decent ones flood your brain with serotonin. Your brain then expects the flood to continue, so it underproduces (the comedown). Its the old story of there being no such thing as a free lunch. There are a lot of people around though, who prefer to live with the peaks and troughs.

Wise words.

In the beginning God made 'the light.'

Shortly thereafter God made three big mistakes.

The first mistake was called MAN, the second mistake was called WO-MAN, and the third mistake was the invention of THE POODLE.

Actually I didn't start using that kinda stuff until after I was 18. It was literature that got me started. I didn't want anyone to think I would advocate minors use drugs. I think it's a very wise decision to wait until your neurons are modestly adult-like to determine whether or not any use fits your individual needs or desires. Just wanted to clarify that! I wonder if they've ever done any other kinds of studies: most of my friends who were users were quite intellectual and that was, in fact, one of the 'perks' of using stuff like that.

I just wanted to know where I can score some peaks and troughs...It seems Silk Road carries heroin, PCP, and a host of other stuff. No peaks and troughs though. Is this a new designer drug?

I assumed since it has been reported on by just about every major news outlet in the country that it was hardly a secret. In the interest of not offending anyone (on a thread called 'drugs') I did attempt to go in and remove the offending words. The software would not let me edit it. By all means if you think I've perverted the community by my admittedly terrible sense of humor take the thing down. If the site weren't completely obfuscated from the internet proper I could see a cause for alarm (however it is). I probably don't have to add that if you are moronic enough to order drugs from the internet (even from a site that isn't visible from the internet proper and requires EXTREME user intervention to make it so) you likely aren't reading too many audiophile journals/blogs from your cell in San Quentin. YMMV. Although I like to kid around like a lot of folks on here, I made a point to clarify where I stand on the issue. To my mind I see little difference between the words above and substituting them with the words Piratebay or Usenet, or letting it be known that there is pornography on the internet. I may be wrong but once a story has been released by the major media outlets I think the cat is already out of the bag. Could I have been more careful? Perhaps. That being said, I think the number of underage audiophiles that can afford this hobby is probably quite low on this site so I don't believe I've derailed any of our young people. I only know of the site from the mainstream media and what has been reported on it.

I've been no fan of this thread up til now, but naming a way in which drugs can be purchased is way beyond what I believe this site should be about.

I hope this thread will be closed down, but if not, at the very least this last message should be deleted.

Do you honestly think a readership with a median age of ~55 years is going to start abusing heroin because they read this comment?

Do you worry about all the threads that advocate lifting a ground on a piece of audio equipment housing a high voltage transformer?

Which thread, in reality, has the greater potential (so to speak) to cause harm?

I think this is an issue of class (the message, not the person) . . . not people's tendency to start following the inclinations of others.

I notice people often use asterisks in place of letters when printing four letter words. Anyone here not heard or used their share of profanity? But the asterisks often appear because it's just in better taste.

I read what you wrote, but I found that sentence to be as disingenuous as the rest of your commentary.

If you don't like the poll, why do you keep posting to the thread, thus sending it to the top?

(Admittedly, I normally don't read your posts at all, because I have you on my ignore list, but unfortunately I see them if I am not logged into the interface.)

Earlier I had written about my God-son and the concern with his increasing drug use. He did have a few issues (nothing that couldn't be worked on), but he did use weed for escapism and/or fun at a high rate (several times a week). He had threatened several times and tried in the past to "get really wasted and kill himself". As much as the massive support group around him tried the help him see the light, he couldn't, we all just didn't get there, and very sadly he passed away early last week. May he Rest In Peace. He had just turned 16 a few days earlier.

By getting to know him so well this year since returning to NZ late last year, I know that his high usage wasn't letting him make any progress on his issues - if he didn't start, or didn't start when so young, then perhaps it might have been different.

He's smart, sporty, and generally did well at school. That all started going downhill from the time he started using (last year); I would agree that causation at that point in time would be weak. Since then, he's become more of a regular user it's fed the spiral (and causation appears stronger). So I would say the latter. Of course there's many other possible factors (it's also possible neither choice is correct as he might be a weed user who bacame a loser due to other factor(s)), but my point is, relatively a mid-teens' non-user is much better off than a regular mid-teens' user and our (adults') apparent complacency on weed (and other soft drugs) can send dangerous messaging hence my initial arrrggghhhh!

Interesting thread but as i struggle to keep my 15 y/o God-son's weed usage under some type of 'control' and i see ~30% of respondents sometime using it when listening I go arrrgggghhh; i hope he doesn't see this thread as 'sometimes' in his mind means weekly, and according to him weekly usage is ok ><!

Everyone i know who did it that regularly when they were mid-teens ended up being a loser in varying degrees (most extreme case was death, best case was under-achievement (IMO)). Weed IMO is such a dangerous drug for teens which slowly kills their motivation and enhances most teens' DGAF attitude. Of course they don't see that - it's just fun and no obvious major immediate impact.

He likes the 27 Club (27 Club - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), likes music, has now experimented with pills and shrooms (Class A), and i guess you can hear my fear as to where it might be going. Nirvana's (Teen Spirit lyric) "Oh well, whatever, nevermind" is his mantra.

I don't want to OT the thread - so thanks for listening to my concerns - i guess the thread was about listening and drugs anyway :)

Thanks for the advice and concern guys. My Godson and I (and one other adult he trusts) do have an agreed 'drugs policy' (which covers frequency / types of drugs). Complete abstinence wasn't a workable option. He's also ok with voluntarily testing to aid his self-control and for verification. Fingers crossed & thanks again.

Meanwhile, back to the topic ...since I don't smoke, barely drink, don't drink coffee or (Western) tea, and merely rely on the power of the amps and music, the most i typically find in my hand listening to music is a (wine) glass of sparkling water :)

Given the pain that drug use has caused some members, it might be time to delete this poll/thread.
