rando
Yes, unlike seeing a performance on multiple nights little changes but oneself between listens. At least the physical recording is unlikely to change to meet perception or mood. Four pianos requiring constant retuning poses less of problem inside a recording than it does within the performance. It all comes off like a chainsaw ripping through a forest. No tooth ever gets resharpened the same, the oil to gas mixture between fillings is too rich or lean requiring further tampering, and what leaves off at a strong and masterly cut returns with a different exhaustion than it should display if taken in quick succession. Most of ECM musicians are quite consistent in their styles for decades. Keith Jarrett, for instance. Or late John Abercrombie, or Jan Garbarek. But, these musicians brought an immense depth of content beyond the stylistic consistency. As for Brahem, I was much enamored by his first two CDs on ECM, which I purchased in Budapest in 92. Since than day quarter a century ago I've been listening every his album on ECM, but, honestly, did an effort to listen to the end each time. Style, yes, not much else. I have all of Brahem's work and share the impression that he is a gifted artist, a shining star in the ECM galaxy and one who suffers from stylistic consistency. One could argue that it is better to get stuck in a "good groove' and do little to expand artistically than, as so often happens, to release one stellar work only to get lost and never find that voice again in later recordings. While I agree that there is a sameness to his work, it is a music that creates a mood in a way that that is quite special to me. That said, I see yet another work just released to celebrate his 60th birthday... sphinxsix
The Japanese version of the CD (that I personally prefer) is substantially different from the European/American one. Brian Bromberg demoes some basses playing to his own cover of "Voodoo Child" (no guitars, BB plays all the basses). BacHolz 1 Link to comment

Duration of individual pieces vary quite significantly compared to the Rousset version above. The mood specified in the titles seem to be mostly ignored in the Yates version and the play was rather heavy handed most of the time. Rousset's on the other hand has a good mix of moods. Sounds good to me Album of the evening: Scarlatti: The Keyboard Sonatas Scott Ross Listened to CD24 which covers K.372 to K.391. Musicophile 1 Link to comment
