SACD Ripping using an Oppo or Pioneer? Yes, it's true!

No. This was  a SACD rip, Lully: L'Orchestre du Roi Soleil from AliaVox.  Judging from the spectogram, the frequency cuts off at 22kHZ which is consistent with a CD.  Therefore the SACD was upsampled from a CD original.  The same thing happened with the original Norah Jones "Come Away With Me" SACD which was confirmed to be an upsampled CD pressing.  BIS recordings that are from an original 24 bit PCM44.1 show the same pattern but not the same brick wall pattern.

Here is an example of spending money on nothing.  The Dire Straits Digipack.  The SACD is sourced from the same recording as the CD (this is a HDCD, but that means nothing here). The first image is the spectrogram of the CD.  The second is the SACD.  The difference in views is that the SACD potentially has higher resolution above 22kHz, but there is nothing there but noise.  The SACD is an upsampled CD.  The only potential benefit here is the multi-channel.  Both formats max out at the same resolution, 22kHz.  This is sad

SACDs created from Analog (assuming not ADD) should have higher resolution.  Below is an example of Sam Cooke's Portrait of a Legend.  You can clearly see higher resolution.  But even knowing that the original recording was analog doesn't mean that they have created the SACD from that master.  Another bad example is John Coltrane's Blue Train, recorded in 1957, but the SACD release was an upsampled CD.  I have good sounding CDs and SACDs but I object to paying a premium for HD that is not.  I now am only purchasing high res that I know was recorded and produced that way.  Myself, I don't know if I can tell the difference between a PCM96 and a DSD64, but direct DSD264 sounds fantastic

Hi I found your site and this topic by mere chance. I have some SACD and some of them are scratched. Therefore I was happy to read that I finally can copy and safe them. So I bought a Sony BDP-S590 player with Firmware M12R.0320. I read Phthalocyanine's and Undertone's Guide, downloaded the necessary files and prepared an USB stick. The player detects the stick but the script does not seem to run, because the tray stays closed.

What did I do:

  1. Reset player to factory settings
  2. Checked the folder name: It's AutoScript
  3. Tried a different stick: No difference
  4. Disconnected the player from the power
  5. Checked the files in the AutoScript folder:
    1. AutoScript
      #MTKAT 0.xx script
      CLI(CLI_exec cp /mnt/sda1/AutoScript/sacd_extract_160 /)
      CLI(CLI_exec insmod /lib/modules/2.6.35/BDP/splitter.ko)
      CLI(CLI_exec /sacd_extract_160 -S &)
      CLI(CLI_drv.ir.rx.sq 0xaf000)
    2. AutoScript.TSS
      #MTKAT 0.xx script
      CLI(CLI_exec cp /mnt/sda1/AutoScript/sacd_extract_160 /)
      CLI(CLI_exec insmod /lib/modules/2.6.35/BDP/splitter.ko)
      CLI(CLI_exec /sacd_extract_160 -S &)
      CLI(CLI_drv.ir.rx.sq 0xaf000)
    3. sacd_extract_160

Does anybody know, what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks and greetings from Germany

Some good news:

After reading 3h trough this topic, I decided to upgrade the firmware. And now the USB drive is working and the tray opens.

But now the bad news:

[FAILURE] Port 2002 of 192.168.178.39 is inaccessible.

For testing I deactivated the Windows Firewall, but no changes.

Enable the Quick Start mode in the player's Settings menu.

If using SACDExtractGUI, re-specify the path to sacd_extract.exe in the Program field, using the Browse button (overwrite what is currently in that field).

Then observe the following sequence:

Step 1: Power on the S590, monitor the initial boot sequence via it's front panel display (wait for it to go dark).

Step 2: Connect USB thumb drive / AutoScript runs / tray opens automatically / place SACD in tray but don't close it.

Step 3: Power OFF the S590 / tray closes automatically / player goes to sleep / AutoScript gains root access control.

Step 4: Wait while S590 LED display flashes OFF / display goes dark again / Run the rip.

Quick Start was already enabled.

Path was specified.

Step 1: The Display says "Wait" and goes dark

Step 2: I connect the USB drive but then I have to hit the On/Off again. Then the script runs

Step 3: Doing as you wrote

Step 4: Display goes off; Port is still inaccessible

Here are my settings and the AutoScript files

AutoScript.zip 128.65 kB · 0 downloads

After Step 1, when the display goes dark, the player is sleeping (OFF). Now turn it ON.

Then use the remaining steps, in other words you then insert the USB flash drive into a player that is already ON, power it OFF, disc tray closes, display flashes OFF, goes dark, only then Run the rip.

After any failed attempt, remove the flash drive and power cycle the player to clear the deck before the new attempt is made.

Hello

I would like to ask for your advice on how to get it working - still couldn't succeed till now.

I GUESS the problem is related to the LAN connection, but that's just a guess.

Please feel free to suggest another procedure - but only if well documented please.

Please let me know, if you need additional information.

Description:

I try to follow the following procedure: "SACD Backup (Awake-Server Method)"

(2019 by Phthalocyanine and Undertone for Audiophile Style)

After several attempts I successfully followed the instructions to initiate the BDP-S590 with my remote. In the next step I startet the software "ISO2DSD" and hit "Execute". But unfortunately nothing happens.

The IP address I use is correct as I can "see" the BDP-S590 in my router.

But I'm not sure the software to BDP-S5900 connection is set up correctly.

I later try to ping the BDP-S590 from my Mac and I get a strange response:

64 bytes from 192.168.178.35: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.369 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.178.35: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.341 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.178.35: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.401 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.178.35: icmp_seq=8 ttl=64 time=0.349 ms

this goes on for ever....

I believe that's not correct - is it?

my setting

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Sony BDP-S590

LAN connection (both (Mac and BDP-S590) are connected via Switch)

Sonor - ISO2DSD

The USB-Stick

It's a JetFlash Transcend 32GB, formate to FAT32 (with "Master Boot Record")

(For the preparation I followed "The SACD Ripper's Guide to macOS Media Formatting Universe (Updated April 6, 2018)")

The USB-Stick has one folder "AutoScript" with the following content:

  • autorip.sh
  • AutoScript
  • sacd_extract_160

content of the Autoscript:

#MTKAT 0.xx script
CLI(CLI_exec cp /mnt/sd*/AutoScript/sacd_extract_160 /)
CLI(CLI_exec insmod /lib/modules/2.6.35/BDP/splitter.ko)
CLI(CLI_exec /sacd_extract_160 -S &)
CLI(CLI_drv.ir.rx.sq 0xaf000)
CLI(CLI_exec /bin/sh /mnt/sd*/AutoScript/autorip.sh)
CLI(CLI_drv.ir.rx.sq 0xaf000)

Still having problems

@Graf_Orlok

@MikeyFresh

@wouterk

thanks for helping! I changed the content of the USB-stick.

I tried the folder from GRAF_ORLOK and I tried the content provided by MIKEYFRESH - Still can't start the ripping.

Description

I changed the content of my USB-Stick to the recommended content. Thanks to GRAF_ORLOK and MIKEYFRESH

I successfully ping my BDP-S590 - So LAN is functioning (I changed the name of the device within my router - I guess this has no relevance for the software "iso2dsd" - as it uses the IP address.

I follow the procedure "SACD Backup (Awake-Server Method)", I  start "iso2dsd_gui.jar", the correct IP is selected, but nothing happens after "Execute".

On my Mac:

- Within the directory User/MeMyself/documents/ is the folder "iso2dsd"

- this folder has the following content:

  • iso2dsd_gui.jar
  • sacd_extract
  • SACDExtractGUI.jar
  • USE_AT_YOUR_OWN_RISK
  • version.txt
  • folder "src"
  • folder "doc"

All but "iso2dsd_gui.jar" are from the same source.

I'm have no idea how to locate my mistake. Help is very much appriciated.

German for convenience:

Wie verhält sich der Player mit USB-Stick? Öffnet sich das Laufwerk automatisch?

Nochmal kurz zusammen gefasst:

    6. Bei OFFENEN Laufwerk Gerät wieder ausschalten (Standby)
    7. An den Mac gehen.
