Funding? making SACD ripping available through USB!

Recommended Posts

I think if Mr Wicked had given up his project then he would have notified that here and on his blog. However, it is another question if it is worth waiting the fruit of Mr Wicked's project for those who want to rip their SACD collection asap. Anyway, I hope Mr Wicked is well.

My guess (pure speculation) is that any delay has more to do with raising a small child than any health issues.

I expressed serious skepticism on two occasions a year ago about whether this project would ever come to fruition. All of those who reacted in this thread to my skepticism back then boo-hooed what I had to say. Frankly, because it is such a waste of time, I quit checking on the progress of this project months ago -- that is, until just now. And confirming my earlier suspicions, the reality is that next to nothing has happened in the year since my last post. I can't believe people are still signing up. I'll check back again in another year. By then there will probably several hundred more waiting for godot. My advice: don't hold your breath.

I can't believe someone who considers this such a waste of time wastes their time by periodically revisiting the thread to remind everyone of their opinion of it ... and them. Seems perverse.

The man is not asking for money, so if it takes a few years, fine. I would rather have it sooner rather than later myself, I would far rather buy SACDs than CDs. But...it doesn't make much difference in the long run.

+1. Mr. Wicked apparently is busy with his family and doesn't have time for his hobby. I bet at some point he does get this done. Till then, none of us have lost anything.

It would have been far more efficient to just write, "Nyah, Nyah. I told you so!"

You don't buy it. We get it. We also don't care...

I'll sign up if we can get verification this project will move forward. I'm not signing up to wait another year or two.

It costs you nothing to sign up. Just put your name into a Google Docs spreadsheet. He isn't asking for any money from you. So I don't understand the point of waiting.

Dr. Wicked does this as a hobby. He hasn't communicated in a while, we're assuming he's too busy with his young family to put time into the hobby. Assumption is that at some point he will get it done.

It's certainly understandable if he can't work on this anymore but it would be polite if he took 5 minutes and wrote a post to that effect. It's been almost a year since he wrote anything. Luckily, most stuff is coming out on BluRay Audio now which is easy to rip. However, I still have a few SACDs sitting around and many more I see for sale used but have to ignore. I'd just like a quick update.

Or you can get DSD and PCM music on file downloads these days, and skip ripping/copying Blu Ray Audio and SACD discs altogether.

Much easier than using Mr. Wicked's software on a Playstation or DVDAE on a PC. :)

Yes, I just bought an album yesterday from https://www.nativedsd.com. However, about 90% of albums on SACD are not available for download.

Don't forget to check Acoustic Sounds which carries many of the major label titles as DSD Downloads.

On Native DSD, an interesting feature to look at is the search engine that lets you find albums never released on SACD, but available as Stereo and Multichannel DSD downloads. Along with DSD 128 and DSD 256 downloads which are not available from SACD discs.

I have this SACD at home (
) and I really want a digital copy of the SACD track which was recorded with DSD. I would really like to play it on my Fiio X3 on a pair of Sennheiser HD800s. I would totally buy one of these.

I will add my name to the list.

AFAIK, it was not recorded in DSD but in Telarc's SoundStream (50kHz PCM) and later converted to DSD. FWIW.

These recordings are from the early 80's (or there about). I did not realize that the Soundstream system had 50KHz sampling rate.

Here's some technical background info on the Telarc Soundstream SACD reissues:

To prepare this material for Super Audio CD, Telarc went back to the original Soundstream 50kHz master tape recording and then transferred it to Direct Stream Digital. The Soundstream to DSD transfers were done by Paul Blakemore and the SACD production supervision was handled by Erica Brenner. All three of the Super Audio CDs were made by Sony DADC in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Telarc describes the process by noting that these SACDs were “produced from the original Soundstream masters using the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording process. Transfer to DSD is accomplished entirely in the digital domain through the Data Conversion Systems (dCS) 972 Sample Rate Converter with custom software, thereby preserving the original recording’s 25kHz frequency response and filtering characteristics.”

Telarc also notes that “To produce the original compact disc, the Soundstream signal had to be converted from 50kHz to 44.1kHz, a process that inherently causes a loss of quality – not only by lowering the frequency response but also by the complex mathematical process needed to derive 44.1kHz from 50kHz. The advent of Direct Stream Digital (DSD) and its frequency response of over 100kHz allows the Soundstream tapes to be remastered to DSD, presenting to the listener the true sound of the recording. Not only is the original bandwidth preserved, the sonic artifacts produced by the awkward sample-rate conversion are eliminated as well. The end result is the sound that the recording team intended, even though it had to wait for more than 15 years!”

The most faithful (conversion free) way of hearing these recordings would be a 16bit/50kHz download, but hardly any DAC supports 50khz, so there must be some kind of digital conversion to release them.

I see, you are correct. It's still a great recording :)

Agreed! I think that many of these early Telarc recordings/CD's still sound very good measured against any standard.

Agreed. It is not the $200 USB solution hoped for, but the Oppo103, Pioneer, etc. via Ethernet solution might even be be better. I like Oppo, myself, and I trust them for reliability, longevity and excellent support. I am ordering a 103 for the purpose. I expect it to last until I no longer need it.

I'd be fairly certain Mr W was on to the developments re Oppo, Pioneer early in the year, as per other web sites.

Please could you explain what is meant by the Oppo103 solution

Thanks,
