Based on my experience that is certainly not the case, the AMD driver has been horrible battle always when I've tried it...

nVidias latest driver for me has been an absolute disaster. I had to reinstall my entire system. And I am not alone.

That is quite close to CUDA and maybe usable. I would need to check if the library of support functions covers the needs.

Some support for Intel GPUs may be coming at some point too.

That (AMD GPU support) would be a great key factor for HQP 5.

I have no Nvidia or AMD GPU. I will be buying an AMD RX 6800 next month, and would buy HQP 5 instantaneously.

HQP 5 ?  I am stuck at 4.6 so I can continue to use ASDM7EC/DSD256/PS mp 2s on my machine. I am one of those who cannot use 4.7 and above.   Maybe I will be able to upgrade when I build my next machine in a few years. My current machine is only 2.5 years old so it is too soon to build another. I have read that the 11th generation Intel chips will have substantially higher clocks and better multi-core capabilities so I will wait until they are out to decide.

The NVIDIA drivers are proprietary while the AMD drivers are open sourced.

While just horribly buggy and broken... They also don't have the latest and greatest features their Windows drivers have, because of the open source nature. While Nvidia drivers are the same for Windows and Linux.

So far every ATI/AMD GPU I've tried have pretty quickly ended up into electronics waste recycling.

Nvidia doesn't support Wayland, and that's what even Ubuntu is heading towards unless you use some other version of it than normal plain Ubuntu with Gnome.

I hear you saying this, and I see every Linux forum saying the exact opposite. I don't know who to believe. Either way, my CAPs is running Ubuntu server and none of this has anything to do with that which is running just fine.

Tried to upgrade to Desktop 4.7.2 from 4.7.1. Got a screen that I've never seen before in previous upgrades. Don't know how to proceed. It's a Ubuntu machine. Just upgraded to 20.04.  Would appreciate any help.

To upgrade you just run "sudo dpkg -i hqplayer4desktop....deb" (correct file name for what ever version you are installing.

I use Ubuntu Studio which has XFCE desktop. But Ubuntu ships the Nvidia's driver for the normal desktop version too. It is just not the latest. But you get latest from Nvidia.

I don't read Linux forums, I just use things and have my own opinion. For many years AMD didn't have anything proper for GPGPU HPC and now they are trying to mimic CUDA to gain some traction because CUDA has become defacto standard for that area.

I need to see how well they have tooling for Linux + Windows (and maybe macOS) and if it is going to work smoothly. But I'm not particularly holding my breath on this.

Hi @Miska and all HQPlayer users.

Are you aware of any RPi HAT DACs that support DSD256 sample rate input?

Allo Katana is nice but limited to DSD128.

No, AFAIK the RPi I2S port has some reliability problems at 352.8/384k, so it works reliably only up to 192k.

AMD announced today the new 6000 GPUs. One of the things announced is "Smart Access Memory" which means that when used with the new 5000 CPUs, the cpu will have direct access to all 16GB memory of the GPU.

I am curious if this feature could have any benefit for HQP if/when it supports AMD.

Also can the large 16GB memory or 128MB cache of all 3 models be beneficial to HQP compared to smaller memory/cache  of other GPUs?

Obviously not the most straightforward solution, though just wondering if there were an easier way to be done via USB OTG of RPi4?

This new concept opens a new window for all RPi gears, like DACs, TransportPi, FifoPi and so on, to work with higher performance USB streamers. Native DSD up to DSD512 and PCM 384KHz or higher, HQPlayer, Roon up-sampling.... all become possible.

It's the first time I got the native DSD256 signal out of GPIO. I use Volumio. BridgePi works great. RPi native DSD over GPIO is no longer a dream. Maybe I can forget the DoP.

I finally made it! Got native DSD512 from GPIO on a RPi through BridgePi. I use Amanero Combo384 as the USB streamer.

Native DSD -> RPi USB -> Amanero -> BridgePi -> 40pins GPIO i2s -> DAC HAT

RaspberryPi GPIO has restrict to play native DSD. And DoP is also limited to DSD128 only. So BridgePi is the only solution to play native DSD and DSD512 (as well as all PCM) over RPi HATs. Software and everything else will keep the same no change. The only thing is that you need to select the USB DAC in the software settings.

Of course, it's true it can work without a RPi, So you can connect the BridgePi to a mini PC or what ever else without changing anything. That makes it even more flexible.

In the end maybe it's easier to go for the upcoming Khadas Tone 2 instead, USB ports on RPi4 are OK now but it's a different story for RPi3

FYI - both RPi3 and RPi4 were confirmed to work for Native DSD 512 (USB outputs only) by running the right distro

Hi @seeteeyouThanks, yes RPi4 is very good for high sample rates, for USB output. No more shared bus like previous RPi's.

It's definitely nice to see the DIY community might have some success with DSD256 with RPi4 via GPIO pins.

I guess I will wait to see if Allo Audio or other HAT makers manage to make a suitable HAT for the RPi4.

Hi @asdf1000 You're very welcomed. I haven't tried this myself but someone in China demonstrated how patching the kernel might seem to do the trick. This DAC HAT was stacked right on top of RPi4 (i.e. connected via GPIO) and the corresponding sampling rates for PCM / DSD should be the the real deal unless they're fooling around with Photoshop etc.

(It's definitely DSD512 via GPIO)

They're citing these links below but both of them were only going up to 384kHz/32bit

https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/commit/e621a35cf91a6167d8b594b44f83c2aba0bbb5f7

Though someone did share this after adding 768kHz/32bit

https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/192465-asynchronous-i2s-fifo-project-ultimate-weapon-fight-jitter-523.html#post6246882

If nothing were faked whatsoever, I guess that maybe the hardware of RPi4 should be good to go but somehow almost nobody seemed to be interested in the software part yet.

Problem at least up to Pi3 with this is that people tend to get random L/R channel swaps at 352.8/384k rates.

When using HQP through Roon, my system has recently stopped playing more than 2 songs in a row. The scroll bar at the bottom also does not track with the music - it doesn't move, while music plays.  I've tried restarting, switching dacs.  Anyone run into the same or have suggestions?  Roon by itself works OK.

Also, less of an issue, but I can't seem to use very high rates of streaming through my local home network without getting glitches, despite adjusting buffer sizes (e.g., DSD 512).  I see data streaming at a rate of ~50MB/sec, and my switches are all rated at 100.  I am wondering if a better router might help (I have stock fios from last year).

HQPlayer log file could shed some light into what is the issue. Does HQPlayer work on standalone, without Roon?

100 Mbps is not quite enough for DSD512 or such. 1 Gbps should work fine.

Still playing with my setup...

Steaming from Logitech Media Server to HQPlayer embedded via Linn Kazoo.  Tidal works fine, however most of my local files are in Apple Lossless .m4a and won't play.  What file formats does HQPlayer embedded work with?

I like embedded metadata, so wav is a no go for me.  Does AIFF work?  Or any any method of transcoding any file formal in LMS to send to HQPlayer in wav?

I use evaluated Win version of HQPlayer Desktop. If I connect my workstation directly with Chinese clone of Amanero card, Backed set as “ASIO” and Device I can choose from “Combo 384 ASIO 1.03” and “Amanero ASIO Combo 384”. First of them works very well, second don’t work. If I connect Intel NUC as NAA, set Backed: “NetvorkAudioAdapter” I can select Device: “naa:Combo384Amanero:USBAudio”, but it doesn’t work. If I want to play some track, only blue indicator is repeatedly going from left to right and back. Do you know anybody some solution?
