mkrzych
One of my recent purchase. Very well played and interesting contemporary trio music. Improvised, but with good taste and not overworked. Sound it not bad, slightly too much compressed, but legit 24/96 download from HDTracks. Recommended to check it out. -- Krzysztof Maj http://mkrzych.wordpress.com/ "Music is the highest form of art. It is also the most noble. JoeWhip
By the way, Loverman on the Vanguard album could really turn into my favorite version of this standard. This release certainly has the definitive version of "Car Wash"! Link to comment

It is a trio playing, so the ''percussion instruments'' is just a drum set. Rad Bennett is more known for his reviews of classical music so he is excused. But one could argue that drums are . the sound of the many percussion instruments that are so imaginatively employed. OK:) Link to comment
Musicophile
Finally downloading the Witmer trio as well. My first DSD128 file. Now curious if A+ actually plays that thing. Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment
Musicophile
Finally downloading the Witmer trio as well. My first DSD128 file. Now curious if A+ actually plays that thing. A+ obviously does, on the fly conversion of DSD128 to PCM24/88 working smoothly. Must admit the album is pretty well recorded. Enjoying it via my HD800. However, was disappointed by the complete lag of tagging of the DSF tracks. Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment
Boris75
A+ obviously does, on the fly conversion of DSD128 to PCM24/88 working smoothly. A quick remark: I am sure that the DSD128 files sound very good, but they are conversions of the the 24/96 WAV masters. My understanding is that SoundLiaison recorded only Impromptu in DSD (in parallel with PCM) and all other albums in PCM. Anyway, this probably does not matter in this case since DSD128 has sufficient bandwidth to capture all sonic information on the 24/96 master. Link to comment

I didn't check, I just assumed the highest resolution must be the master. My Dac doesn't do DSD anyhow, so I'll try to redownload the PCM master. They actually run the PCM track through an analog console to record it in DSD. Seems like a waste of time to me. Here, you can buy the studio master which is PCM and cheaper than the DSD copy. Call me crazy, but I want the studio master. I have several of their recordings. En Azul sounds sensational in 24/96 WAV. Excellent playing as well. This one is a no brainer. Link to comment

With one exception, Impromtu (Tony Overwater & Bert van den Brink), was recorded direct to PCM and direct to DSD with two seperate recorders. Link to comment

Musicophile
Can someone give me a top 5 or 10 of the best jazz piano trio . I love the music just not familiar like I am with the classic jazz players . This one is tricky obviously. First of all, you can check out my 25 essential Jazz albums on my blog, it contains quite a number of trio albums, and obviously I highly recommend all of them 25 Essential Jazz Albums | musicophilesblog – From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Now to the actual top 10 list, I suppose nobody would disagree that Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Oscar Peterson belong in any TopX list of piano trios. Beyond that, it becomes more personal. If you look through this thread collectively we've identified probably hundreds of artists, and many of these I didn't have the time to go through yet. My plan is to eventually go through all of them on my blog, but this may take some decades (not joking..). Just follow this link to check only my blog entries on Jazz piano trios: Piano Trio | musicophilesblog – From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms, and in the meantime start with Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. While I would agree, don't forget to add Monty Alexander, who IMHO is the best jazz piano player alive today His music is infectious. After his live performances, the crowd leaves the club dancing. I know, I have done it myself! Link to comment

I know, I have done it myself! +1 I started to seriously listen to piano trios because of artists like Medeski Martin & Wood (I suppose they introduced me to the possibilities of a Jazz trio), and then Dave Brubeck and Monty Alexander. I don't know if Monty Alexander is the best jazz piano player alive today...but he certainly deserves an honorable mention. Link to comment
JoeWhip
I did say IMHO. Who else could weave something Like Meet The Flinstones into another jazz classic? Ever hear his Battle Hymn of the Republic? Great stuff. Also, there is Fred Hersch who is fantastic as well as well as the lesser known Christian Jacob who is better known as Tierney Sutton's piano player but who has a fine trio himself, who happen to be the rest of her band! The Live in Tokyo set they released is superb. Link to comment

JoeWhip
There are quite a few but to start out, my favorite is Montreau Alexander. It was recorded in 1977 and features Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton. IT is available on CD or vinyl. Both are a tad bright with the vinyl sounding brighter. I would grab the 30th Anniversary edition which is available as a CD rip on Qobuz. The second which gets a ton of play here is Uplift. There is an Uplift 2 as well which is quite good. As far as I know, they are only available on CD rather cheaply normally on Amazon. Link to comment

Love Jeff Hamilton by the way! He's one of the reasons that some of Diana Krall's albums are good in spite of being very mainstream, and he does a killer job as part of the Ray Brown trio as well. I saw him live, 20 years ago, with Gene Harris and Ray Brown, still remember that concert... Check out my blog at musicophilesblog.com - From Keith Jarrett to Johannes Brahms Link to comment
