New Manhattan Dac from Mytek

Recommended Posts

So quiet for Manhattan users feedback here.

I got this DAC for a while and still tried to make it work with all players I have. However, it can do only up to DSD128 in Mac OSX.

I knew that this DAC is capable for DSD256 but I would like to know that can it be done in Mac OSX as well? Anyone successfully setup it to work? Please, please shrare.

Thank you.

Unless the maker provides a special driver, OS X only supports up to DSD128 over DOP. exaSound has developed drivers for their DACs for this purpose, and LH Labs is proposing a DirectDSD protocol that would allow higher rates, but right now, that's it.

Thank you @jhwalker for your clarification.

I just searched Google and found a very interesting info regarding to DSD256 over DoP on OSX (use Google Translate to read topic).

iFI-Audio.jp News and Blog: Mac OS

Manhattan could not do PCM beyond 382Hhz so it might not be albe to do as iFi do.

Thank you.

Yes, the DOP method requires a good deal of PCM bandwidth, as the DSD stream is "packaged" inside PCM. It takes a DAC capable of 384kHz PCM to playback DSD128 when packaged via DOP, and a DAC capable of 768kHz to handle DSD256. There are currently very few such DACS - as you note, the iFi Micro (and Nano, now) iDSD DACs are two of them.

Playback under Windows can be a bit different, as DAC manufacturers have the capability to deploy ASIO drivers that allow playback without the DOP packaging, thus requiring only half the PCM bandwidth. exaSound is the only vendor, however, who has currently provided an ASIO driver for use in OS X, so DOP is the only viable choice for the rest of the pack.

Can anyone provide a Single-Ended Output Impedance for the Manhattan?

I am guessing it is the same for the 192-DSD but have not been able to find a number for either and it does not appear in the Specs.

Numbers for Balanced would be nice to have in my records.

Thanks.

Suggestion: write or call Mytek. [email protected] I've received support from them in the past.

I talked to a dealer who sells the Manhattan as well as about 10 other good DACs, several much more expensive than the Mytek. He said the Manhattan is as good or better than anything up to it's price, and is at least as good or better than several of the more expensive DACs up to about $10K.

Also said the preamp section is very high quality, better than the DSD 192 pre.

FWIW.

Is the preamp section of 192 DSD DAC so bad? Any experiences....?

No, it's good. You'd have to spend a pretty fair amount on a separate to beat it. That said, it's not fantastic. Apparently the preamp section of the new Manhattan is significantly better. If that's true, then it's very good.

Thanks. Would it be possible to use it also with integrated amp?

The Mytek's have just about every feature you could want. You can run them as

a)preamp with analog input;volume controlled analog output into amplifier;

b)DAC with digital input: basically every standard digital input is available;

c) The DAC can be run as DAC only with "bypass" on the volume control - meaning the DAC outputs a line level analog signal at a set volume - bypass of internal volume and preamp function;

d) DAC with digitally controlled volume for analog output:

e) DAC with analog controlled volume for the analog output;

So yes, you can run it in bypass mode directly into analog inputs (preamp) of your integrated amp. I use mine in volume bypass mode. Or you could try using the analog volume control of the Mytek; it might sound better that way on your system, especially if your integrated has an input that bypasses it's own volume control.

I am considering the Mytek Stereo192 ADC to go with the LampizaTor Amber DAC. LampizatOr said they would configure the Amber with XLR (or whatever I needed) with no extra charge.

Curious how did you get Lampizator to give you xlr option for free? That's a $300-$500 option if I recall?

Anybody know how this rates as a headphone amp? I've got the Sennheiser HD 650 and 800. Thinking of adding some planar HP's to the collection. I read the Manhattan drives demanding planars very well. Also read the Manhattan produces pretty deep and tight bass. Would you take that to mean this DAC would add something more to the Senn HD 800's bass? Would be nice.

Brooklyn is now under spotlight and forum is so active.

I'm the owner of Manhattan and keep waiting for two things so long.

1. Firmware upgrade to do DSD256 internal converting

2. Patch for El Capitan USB problem

Mytek, any progress for us now?

Thanks

Seems like that. Now Manhattan appears nowhere in New York. :-)

I'll second this comment. Also, in addition to these things above, I've been long waiting for the inclusion of SDIF as a Sync Source using FireWire Recording on the occasion of firmware update. If realized, it will be of great help for me in DSD128 recording of my old vinyls using my Ayre QA-9 pro.

I hope Michal will be reading this thread.

Since upgrading from DSD 192 DAC to Manhattan last June, I've been trying to register this new one via the Mytek's support page but can not make it even now. This is because they have been still offering an incomplete list of products at the last stage of registration, in which the Manhattan does not show up as a registered machine. This will also be the case with Brooklyn.

I occasionally wonder why this company always making fine products can not cope with a real customer service (sigh).

When I found I could not register my Manhattan last year I emailed them about registration, I have also emailed them several times enquiring about the promised "as soon as possible" El Capitan USB fix. They have never bothered to respond or even acknowledge any of the emails.

I do love my Manhattan - I just hope nothing ever goes wrong with it as I have no confidence in post sales support.

Exacatly. I also tried a few inquiries about registration flaw with no reply from them.

I'm totally agree to your comment. There is no problem with my Manhattan which is working fine and provides better SQ than DSD 192 DAC. But I'm also a DIYer and am an avid user loyal to a Buffalo DAC from Twisted Pear, which has an excellent option of I2S connection which the current Mytek products including Manhattan and Brooklyn can not offer. This will be my last resort in case of poor user support from Mytek to be continued.

I've gotten responses from them in the past from direct email. They also answer the phone.

Inquiries to the same address did not work in my case. That's why I'm writing here.

Yes, I know it worked in the past but making frequent phone calls is not a practical way from here in Tokyo, Japan.

Anyway, thanks for your comments.
