It just doesn't wow me... I'm a huge Trifonov fan and have seen him live several times. But, I 100% agree, this recording didn't wow me. To my ears, he really overdid the rubato. In our house we call it "Bachmaninov"... sphinxsix, AudioDoctor and AnotherSpin 1 1 1 Link to comment
muski
A really solid Symphonic Dances recording. Last week's Sticky Notes classical music podcast did an excellent analysis of this piece. Link to comment

I don’t see it on Qobuz yet (though the first set, Symphonies 1 -5 are: http://open.qobuz.com/album/vfgt2ve9hh4db). I pre-ordered the SACD from Europe and ripped it with my Oppo BDP-103 and the Sonore tools. So far I’ve listened to No’s 6 -8. Very special. Cheers, muski Link to comment

I'm also a big fan, but 100% agree. I especially liked his Barricades recording that he made with lutenist Thomas Dunford. Speaking of which, I hope Thomas Dunford comes out with something new soon. Such an underrated musician—on par with Sean Shibe (who I also like). The last track of this recording is one of my favorite interpretations of Bach's Chaconne. Musicophile 1 Link to comment

I’ve been listening to recently-released Noctures from Jan Lisiecki and Stephen Hough which are nice enough, but neither hold a candle to this collection. And nicely recorded, too. muski
Very “symphonic” playing—not surprising given he’s best known as a conductor. My favorite is track 6, Rachmaninov’s Moment Musicaux No 3 in B Minor - Andante cantibile. ripples 1 Link to comment

muski
A really special album. Wonderful performance and beautifully recorded. I added to my favorites right when Qobuz first launched in the US. And I still find myself scrolling through to the end of my favorites to listen to every month or so... Remarkable that cellist Edgar Moreau was only 23 when this was released. muski Rexp 1 Link to comment

Popular Post muski
Some of the very best Mozart piano concerto performances. For some reason they sound remarkably good run through the M Scaler. I'm always pleased when I find older Redbook recordings with such a wide sound-stage. Listening to No 10 for 2 pianos—one in each ear! 😀 Enjoy muski Michaelb4, EuroChamp, Musicophile and 1 other 3 1 Link to comment
muski
I am neither a huge Yuja Wang nor Dudamel fan, but this wonderful Adams piece plays to their strengths and really works. Not my favorite China Gates, but there’s lots of good ones. Link to comment

I must say, I am absolutely blown away by just how great a performance and recording this is! There are a ton of great Schubert 8/9's out there, but I am hard pressed to think of one I like more than this one. Indeed a super performance, but the audio engineering is also stunning. I think the first movement of this Unfinished will become one of my go to test tracks. Lots of great musical features to help characterize a system. Link to comment
