Clueless and need direction on downloads

I'm 70 and still scratch my head at how some of this works. 

 

In my old setup I used a laptop to run my system for ripping and downloading music.

I used JRiver as the system on the laptop to rip my discs to my Synology NAS. 

When I used the laptop wired to the CD drive for ripping and placing on the NAS and downloading directly from the internet the process seemed straight forward. 

 

I changed my system and now use a iPad with Roon and Qobuz that has the SonicTransporter i9 as the server. The iPad connects wirelessly to my SonicTransporter that either draws music from the Synology or Qobuz for music I don't own. 

 

I would like to download music from ProStudioMasters but I'm not sure how to go about it.

 

I understand the part about going to the PSM site and selecting and paying for the download.

 

If I am on my iPad, where I would make the purchase will it automatically give me the choice of it going to my Synology? If not how do I go about the download.

 

I have reached out to Small Green Computer and the suggestion was to go to Google and see how to download to an NAS. I did but, there was nothing finite enough to be of any help. 

 

Do any of you know where I can find a very basic set of instructions on how to perform this, I am guessing, rather simple operation, once you know.

I need to admit that I have neither of your devices, but some general thoughts about the problem your facing. It's more for the understanding how it should work.

 

Question: Is qobuz installed on the ST9? Just because you can buy from them as well, and dl it to your server, which is basically the same scenario you would use for PSM.

For that case, there should/could/may be a process in place for the transfer to your NAS, if the software is provided by SGC.

 

On the other side, the Synology NAS may have a software option to manage transfers between the devices (ST9 - NAS).

Perhaps it has also a browser option with which you could access the PSM downloads directly to the NAS?

 

Generally after any download, you need to place the album in a folder that is either automatically scanned by roon, or force a roon rescan to include your new music into your library.

 

I am hopeful someone having a similar configuration will chime in to help you based on first hand experience.

I can help. With any download site, like ProStudioMasters, you will be able to dl right away and a dl link to your email. So, some like HDAudio, have their own software to dl with and after dl you can move it anywhere.

not sure that will help the OP, since it is unlikely that the NAS file system will be visible to the iPad (& so cannot be selected as a download target). It’s one of the downsides of iPad only systems that file management is pretty locked down by Apple….

 

But a question to the OP…. do you still have your laptop ? (if not, do you have some other way to interface with your NAS ?). In general, for internet downloads it is better to use a computer to do the download, and then to move the downloaded files onto your NAS.

 

So how do you normally interact with the filesystem of your NAS ?

With a Synology drive it is not hard to setup for Android or iOS. Not sure about the others.

 

I have a Synology drive, mostly for storing pictures. My main PC is my music server.

Did I get it wrong that the TS has a Musicserver from SGC (ROON core preinstalled) supporting these network protocols:
- Roon (RAAT), DLNA, Samba (Sonos® and others), Squeezebox®, Plex Server
and this compatibility:
- Compatible with almost any NAS (Synology, QNAP, Western Digital, Buffalo, and more)
according to SGC.
They say as well: The sonicTransporter i9 uses the fastest-available technology to give our customers a premium experience.
They may need to up their CS on the same level by explaining their customer how to overcome the problem he faces. IMHO !

Assuming that the TS doesn't buy the full library of PSM,

He may install their (PSM) download manager

on the I9 ST and pointing Roon on the chosen folder for these downloads in order to include them in his library
And then looks for help with Synology about transfering files/folder from a computer to a dedicated folder on his NAS.
Attention: when you transfer the files as a copy to a dedicated NAS folder, that folder needs to be integrated as source for the ROON library, and you may the music files may appear twice in the lib as long as you haven't deleted them from the download folder on the I9.

Thanks for the response. Qobuz is not installed on the ST9 although Roon is. I use my account I previously had.

I do have the laptop in by shop for access to Qobuz. If I can't find a way to use the iPad I will bring it back temporarily. 

I will need to figure how to download from there as I don't think my JRiver account is valid any more.

I don't think there is a way to download ProStudioMasters or other purchased high-res music files directly to the iPad first and then transfer to your NAS. In theory, if the music vendor allows you to download to the iPad, you should be able to access your NAS/network and transfer the files from your iPad to the NAS/network storage using the Files app. In reality, I just don't think ProStudioMasters lets you download straight to iPad.

 

So I think you're going to have to use a laptop to download the files you want to purchase and then transfer to your NAS. I don't think you need JRiver though. Also JRiver is perpetual license, you just don't get a new version. For ProStudioMasters, they have their own app to let you download music.

I will give installing the PSM download manager on the iPad and see what happens. 

My guess is the worst that happens is I can't move it to the NAS or it is on the iPad and i put it on a thumb drive and use the laptop to move it somehow.

I will reach out to PSM and see if they have any suggestions also. 

 

I haven't had time to sit and play with the system to figure this out. When I have problems like this I generally spend more time staring at it as I am afraid of screwing something up.

Looks like their download manager doesn't run on iPads... but I bet there's a way around it :-D

 

Do you not have a Windows/Linux/macOS computer? You mentioned a laptop - just install the download manager there, make your purchases on the laptop, and move the files to the NAS.

ProStudioMaster Download Manager can be installed on macOS or Windows only, therefore if Sonic Transporter runs Linux there’s no way to install PDM on it, but it should be possible to use a virtual machine in Linux and install on it Windows (I run a Virtual Box VM on Ubuntu without issues).

It’s very easy to install Virtual Box on Linux and it’s not that difficult to create a Virtual Machine running Windows.

The Windows Virtual Machine can share folders with the host operating system and it should be easy to use PDM in the Windows VM, download your purchased albums and move them to the host OS in the Roon watched folder.

You can start the VM only if needed, no need to keep it always running.

Which operating system is used for the SGC ST I9 server, and - in case it's Linux - can you ask SGC to guide you through the virtual machine installation ?
In case it is Windows  all may be easy .. just ask them to guide you through the installation of  the PSM download manager ( and perhaps the same for qobuz as well).
You've spend multilpe k dollars for that machine, and -imho- you've got all right to expect some service from them.

as I understand it, the issue here is that your synology NAS doesn’t have the ability, out of the box,  to run a web browser and thus download files direct to the NAS.  Plus you don’t want to also run a pc etc just to download and then transfer to NAS.

 

I know nothing about NAS (I just use a PC as my music server) but as I understand  it a NAS is just a specialised PC, so there should be a way to do what you want to do.  The link I posted above is to “Download Station” - a Synology  app  that would seem to allow you to do what you want.  What you want to do seems eminently reasonable to me and there’s got to  be a way.  You could try what I suggested or maybe there is a Synology forum you can ask at.

 - e.g “how do I  run a web browser on Synology NAS to download files and control this process from my iPad”

Thinking out of the box:
 

1) Get some private cloud space (Best you check to which cloud services PSM DL can transfer)
2) Transfer your downloads to that private cloud space
3) Use Download station on your NAS to transfer your audio files from the private cloud to your NAS

no installation beside Synology Download Station on your NAS, and as all that is somehow browser based you are not running into the apple wormhole

There in lies the problem. With my first SGC Andrew was wonderful with helping through problems. I think that business has grown so much that the answers you get are very vague and incomplete. If the system didn't work so well and sound so good I would get rid of it for more customer support. 

 

I will bring the laptop back from the shop and see if it can find the NAS. The laptop will be connected to the switch that the NAS is so I should be able to find it. 

When I first added the either SonicTransporter it found the music on the Synology with no issues.
