Clueless and need direction on downloads

Hi Brad,

as I understand it, the issue here is that your synology NAS doesn’t have the ability, out of the box,  to run a web browser and thus download files direct to the NAS.  Plus you don’t want to also run a pc etc just to download and then transfer to NAS.

I know nothing about NAS (I just use a PC as my music server) but as I understand  it a NAS is just a specialised PC, so there should be a way to do what you want to do.  The link I posted above is to “Download Station” - a Synology  app  that would seem to allow you to do what you want.  What you want to do seems eminently reasonable to me and there’s got to  be a way.  You could try what I suggested or maybe there is a Synology forum you can ask at.

 - e.g “how do I  run a web browser on Synology NAS to download files and control this process from my iPad”

You cannot download purchased albums from ProStudioMaster without their Download Manager …

Just use the laptop, it's going to be the easiest way. It's very, very standard to connect a laptop to a NAS and copy files there.

Likely, their 'download manager' is just monitoring a standard HTTP download, and in theory you could plug the URL that is used into Download Manager on the NAS. However you'd need to find the URL, which probably isn't exposed, the URL might not be signed, so you would have to work out how to authenticate, and there might be other things to get around too.

So I refer you to my first paragraph.

I took a look at ProStudioMasters (even purchased an album overthere), but to be honest I only would buy there if they would have an album that I could not find anywhere else online.

2 reasons:

a) no other way to use their Download Manager to download your purchase.

b) even more important:  you can only download an album ONCE !

Alternative downloads online:

a) Qobuz (you do not need a streaming subscription to buy online albums) - they keep all your purchases available to you (even the album goes out of their catalog)

b) 7Digital.com

Coming back to the intial question of the TS, one can definitely download purchased albums/tracks on one's iPad and move it to a Synology NAS folder.  The app to install both on Synology and iPad is Synology Drive

(there is 1 small caveat : as this app synchronizes in both directions, you need to use an empty folder to download to, otherwise everything in the folder will be downloaded to your iPad)

If you are downloading individual tracks, that's all you need.

If you are downloading a zipped album, you will need another app on your iPad to unzip the album (e.g. Synology DS File )

(sorry but screenshot is in Dutch)

Nice finding!

And helpful considerations, imho!

Thanks all of you for the help.

Hopefully over the holiday weekend I will be able to give it a try with the laptop and JRiver if it is still working.

I only purchased a download from PSM because they had a HiRez album by Scala & Kolacny Brothers and I haven't found any, anywhere else.

Not the album with, Nothing else Matters, I was looking for but, an album unknown to me. Only purchasing to see if the sound quality is better on the HiRez.

I came to notice that it could be difficult to find that record on qobuz,

Here's the link to to the song you were looking for:

Listen to Nothing Else Matters by Cover on Qobuz https://open.qobuz.com/track/36935231

However, it's existing there, filed under "cover" for whatever reasons.

It's the first song of the first album in display chez Qobuz:

Hi Tom,

I have the music in lower Rez. I was looking for a HiRez version hoping for a better quality recording.

Thanks, Brad

Hi Brad,

the original recording of the song (like most of their early 2k work) had been published on vinyl and CD only.
- There must be a reason their new Label Rhino did not offer High-Res PCM files to the main streaming services ...
- It may be doubtful that any high res versions of these tracks are anything else than upsampled
- It may be doubtful that I could mark out the differences between a well recorded 16/44 PCM quality and an upsampled version of it in reality
- I am 12 years younger than you.
YMMV, Tom

In Canada, PSM only offered Gloaming in 24/96 and Dusk in 24/44. But I can see both albums in Qobuz also in the same resolution. Can’t comment on what is available in the USA though. But as mentioned by others, for some reason in Qobuz, the band is listed as Cover, instead of Scala & Kolacny Brothers
