Ralf11
several factors have affected the costs of tuition... for public univ.s the taxpayers are not interested in subsidizing education much anymore - not surprising as they don't have college age kids like they did in the baby boomers go to college era for all univ.s there are a huge number of people who do nothing to advance the mission of the univ. (to bring in grant dollars) and the secondary mission: teaching and then there's MQA Link to comment

UCLA was a liberal indoctrination center when I worked there 30 years ago. At least then, you could have an opposing view without being ostracized from the campus community. That's not possible now. It's sad.... Solstice380 1 Link to comment

And they were good ones too. I am well aware what they cost. I don't know how much it will cost at some point in the future, or when we will be talking about it, but I am sure it will be money well spent when the time comes. ha. My wife and I have discussed this ad nauseum, and we agree on a fundamental point: a college education is well worth it for those who can and will take advantage of the opportunity. But there's a huge difference between being exposed to an education and actually getting one. We know far too many people who graduated from college after expending no more interest or effort than was needed to meet the requirements to do so - and they left with little evidence of the experience beyond a diploma. If your child has at least average intelligence, a modicum of intellectual curiosity, and a desire to know more today than he or she did yesterday, the cost of a college education is well worth it. The college of choice matters more to some than others, and a lot of people have become literate, engaging, and successful adults at state & local schools as well as places in the lower reaches of published rankings. Sadly, a lot of people who went to college to fulfill others' desires or because they thought it was the only way to succeed would have been better off pursuing a different kind of education and career. So my wife and I also agree that college is not right for everybody. We know some very well educated and delightful people who are craftspeople, house painters, electricians, chefs, etc. We have friends who make furniture, who own and operate restaurants that are (deservedly) highly rated and well known, who design and build wind farm generators, who grow grapes in their backyards and make them into wines on the list at Chicago's Four Seasons, etc - and none had a traditional college education. They all possess rich funds of knowledge because they searched, watched, listened, asked, and absorbed from every source they could tap....and they still do. They learned languages from traveling, history from reading, music from concert-going, etc. They'e happy, productive, and well adjusted adults - and that's what we wanted for our kids. We wish everyone could achieve that - the world would be a much nicer place! Superdad, Jud and AudioDoctor 2 1 Link to comment

Ralf11
I agree that a college education is well worth it for those who can and will take advantage of the opportunity. And the advantage need not be monetary or earnings/lifetime, etc. IF affordable, there is a lot of value in learning about great works of literature or sculpture. What is sad - and I see it all around me - is that many young people cannot attend college but want to and would benefit from it. Instead, they are stuck working at min. wage in food service jobs, or worse. AudioDoctor 1 Link to comment
