@AudioDoctor Ditto congrats very happy for you-I got out of ED 32 years ago for same reason now am essentially a concierge MD for my now small private practice

Instead of that Porsche start saving- have you even looked at college tuitions? I am still in practice because I love it but also because 4 kids cost me 600000$(all at StLawrence University and the last one graduated in 2006!)) plus the Princess's wedding but I have a son and daughter in law who were both D3 golf All Americans - and they are still trying to straighten me out to no avail! The other 3 are doing just fine also-they ALL took me and the CFO to Pebble Beach(ALL expenses including the Inn at Spanish Bay) last year for my 70th not a bad thank you Dad&Mom.

Thanks for all your advice and help over the years and don't you just LOVE Qobuz and ROON? Am listening to 624 tracks of Qobuz playlist of the Dead/Jerry with others/Dylan/The Band solo and with others in HiRes/STUDIO and my ME2 shows 2 LED's for the 24/96 and 24/192 recordings(??'pseudo' MQA??)

And here's some sage advice about that subject: never, ever, ever discuss with your SO what your kids' education(s) will / did cost.  The number will harsh your mellow, no matter how good the wine was that got you started on the discussion. You'll both end up figuring out the exchange rate between dollars and "the things you used to love", and you'll have the worst hangover you ever had the next day. This discussion is especially discomfiting for those of us whose entire college and professional educations totalled less than $40k including medical school - and it doesn't even make you feel any better that the adjusted value of that $40k today is about $400k.

 

We put two through private school from K4 to 12. Then they each earned a bachelors' degree, plus a masters for one and an LLD for the other, all from Brown and Harvard.  But most importantly, they learned early in life the meaning and importance of SQ.

ok, to continue the expensive private education topic...  a close friend of mine (a struggling chemist, barely making 6 figures, not an MD) sent his daughter to a top private liberal arts college - I will let you guess at the cost (or COST).  She did her Sr. thesis on weaving styles in Afghanistan.

 

She then took that degree and ... joined the Peace Corps.  He was able to avoid an infarction.

 

She is now about 35 and working at a wildlife rescue center in California.

That was unnecessarily harsh, man.  I will add that at least she used that money to actually go to college and actually graduate.

Good luck with your expanding family--in just a few years you can take your "baby" to concerts--you'll drag her to Emily King, she'll drag you to Taylor Swift. You'll have a blast at both....That's love!

Well, I probably wont be buying a new Porsche anytime soon, but a house, yes. Sometime I need to talk to you about your practice, I think there is a real market for that kind of a practice and wouldn't mind picking your brain. You're welcome for the help, I try if I can and yes, I am loving ROON and Qobuz! Best idea ever was to put the two together!

 

Ah college... the perpetual expense. I am doing my part and voting for politicians that think college should be free at all Public institutions. I suppose we should start saving as well. I went on an ROTC and an Academic Scholarship many years ago, and my SO went on an Athletic Scholarship, both to public schools. However, I don't want my kids to be going into the military so I better hope we have some great and smart athletes!  Or I could start saving...

Everyone in my family, except me who went to a Public school, went to a private college. And they were good ones too. I am well aware what they cost.  I don't know how much it will cost at some point in the future, or when we will be talking about it, but I am sure it will be money well spent when the time comes.

@bluesman agree wholeheartedly-it didn't cost my SO/CFO's and my parents 30000$ for 8 semesters  at SLU combined and that included beer money! #1 son started at 27k in 1996 and change- the princess finished 10 years later her last year cost 42k and none of all 4 included beer money! My med school was only 5k/year and we lived in guadalajara on 5k/year(we paid for it ourselves we were already 30yrs old-#2 son decided not to go to medical school Georgetown/Washington Med were 80k for just tuition by the time he decided he was going to try knowing it was going to be on his dime-smartest move he ever made-I don't even think or regret any of this now and I don't have a hangover-plus they all love and appreciate HiRes music and the Greats of their Mom&Dad's past-as #1 told me(and his friends) after taking his friends to see The Last Waltz at the Ziegfeld in NYC in early 2000's "now i know why dad says this is the greatest american rock and roll band" reactions like that are priceless

Free? Public Universities are terrible money managers. I know as I used to work at UCLA. Making them free shifts all of the cost burden to tax payers. Many of whom will never have a child enter the public University system for the state they live in. That is not fair and reeks of Socialism.

I know the U of Michigan has an Endowment in the tens of billions...

 

edit: 11.9 Billion according to Google, and yet... I don't know if that is per year or for the entire 4 years. When I attended as an out of state student Michigan was the most expensive State School in the country and even with two scholarships I still had debt when I graduated. Mostly for housing.
