Audioquest Jitterbug vs Uptone Regen?

Recommended Posts

The REGEN is maybe a decent product. But Alex should realize that he's not the only guy in the world who matters.

Falsely accusing someone of hacking websites and calling them an asshole openly on a public forum is not cool.

And this "payback" is cool in your mind? It's an interesting way to express your obvious anger with Alex but others will certainly see it as trolling.

Alex, not only do you not owe anyone an explanation of your business model but you really shouldn't feed a troll. Let alone one with a grudge.

It could have been dropped long ago. I may have been a bit off of the parts cost, but I definitely wouldn't of considered my opinion slander.

Who cares what the parts cost ? If it's a reasonable price that people will pay , so be it .

You should rail on the Apple forums about their cost to retail price .

If people feel they are getting gouged like with printer ink costs they will print less or find alternatives .

I definitely do not feel like I'm getting gouged by Uptone .

As always, it seems necessary to inject some fact.

Fact: Alex did not accuse you of hacking a website, he accused you of revealing a webpage for an unreleased product from Sonore. Your excuse was that you didn't know about the product and just accidentally happened to enter the exact URL. Alex said he didn't believe that. This was followed by a separate thread discussing the unreleased product, in which Jesus of Sonore said you should have asked him before discussing the product and revealing the URL.

Not that your comments dignify a response, but just to be clear, the REGEN is made entirely in the USA--4-layer PCB and all--right here in California.

As for parts cost, you are WAY off. Just to give an example, the pair of ultra-low-noise regulators we use (arguably the best 1A, chip regulator on the market) alone cost more than $5, and that is in quantities of 1,000.

TPS7A4700RGWT Texas Instruments | Mouser

All told, the entire cost for everything that goes into a REGEN kit (including cords, the SMPS, the case, etc), plus a modest $15 per unit royalty to John Swenson, comes to a bit over $80. That does not include the cost of my in-house labor (the terrific woman that comes in every morning with a smile and assembles/tests/packs the things) of any of my own office overhead.

After one subtracts out the PayPal or CC charge fees, I just about double my money. That is extremely standard and hopefully allows me to grow my firm over time with additional staff and to invest in new product R&D and production--and someday even an advertisement somewhere. It is true that initial development costs for the REGEN were not high (under $10K), but I can't say that about some of the other projects we are working on.

Funny how some people just look at a product, see a few chips and assume that it is mass-produced for dirt cheap. Maybe for big companies running a 100,000+ units of something, but that's not what goes on in the specialist hi-fi market.

As for the Jitterbug and the REGEN, here is what I recently said in a REGEN thread:

The two will probably be somewhat complimentary.

They work completely differently and perform completely different functions (other than on the 5VBUS power side where the Jitterbug tries to clean the computer-supplied 5V and the REGEN just ditches that and delivers it own from an ultra-low-noise regulator).

The REGEN is all about more perfect signal integrity and impedance match right at the DAC.

Anyway Blizz, your ever-increasing arrogance and snideness really don't deserve to be acknowledged, but as someone who operates ethically and openly, I figured I'd use the opportunity to share how my business really works.

Yes, I am--after a lot of lean years--making a bit more money doing the thing I love. Will REGENs sell like crazy forever or even into next year? Who knows. It is an effective product but the computer audiophile market is finite. That's why we continue to work hard every day on new designs, both complimentary to the REGEN--like the forthcoming 1A PS--and on other entirely different innovations, some if which may take a year or more and really sizable investments of time and money to make real. But whatever we offer, it won't be "me-too" types of products, or things that don't deliver real sonic benefits. Life's too short and it is much more fun to do things that make people go "WOW."

So piss off Blizzard, and cheers to everyone else! ;)

Damn, I am good. I had the financial model down to a Tee. It was exactly what I calculated with my back of the envelope, and is entirely in line with industry practice.

As for Blizz, I wonder when he sees the next hot Uptone Product, if he will jump in line to buy, or if shame and pride will prevent him from doing so?

If you didn't ask Chris to delete the posts I could prove it. But he did accuse me of hacking the site. Then called me an asshole. Just because I shared a link to a product I found on Google.

But of course since he clearly made an ass of his self, the posts were deleted right away.

I asked Chris to delete the posts because such a large number of people including me were complaining about you in the thread that it was swamping any audio discussion. Gosh, deja vu.

How about it just stops here and everyone moves on? This hobby along with online forums pertaining to it should be fun and informative; not unenjoyable. I've pretty much left another forum as that's the way it has become. I truly hope this site doesn't go the same direction.

Move on and let it go. It's really just audio.

That's not the truth but whatever.

Once again, here's the truth: When Alex criticized you for revealing Sonore's unreleased product, your response was not what you are apparently saying now, that you found it on Google. What you said, which was so ludicrous I clearly remember it, is that you were just looking around the Web and somehow entered the exact URL to a page you'd never heard of or seen before. Alex then quite naturally said he didn't believe that.

So that's the first part of the alleged "slander."

With regard to the second part, allegedly calling you an asshole, as a lawyer I think of two responses (I hasten to add this is not legal advice):

1. It is an expression of opinion, which cannot be slander.

2. Truth is a defense.

Having worked for a manufacturer as well as managing a small hifi shop for a number of years, I can say that if the Regen was sold through a traditional retail network, the MSRP would be in the $300 ballpark...and it would still be worth it. But I think most people already realize that it's a steal at $175.

Oh ! Another 'page late and dollar short' post, but it gets me a nice little reminder in the "New Posts" lists for this thread* :)

This was an interesting thread until Blizzard took it over. I don't know anyone here personally, but one comes off as a complete ass, and his forum name rhymes with gizzard.

I'm just excited my Regen should be here in a week or so, and hopefully I can come back to this thread to learn about others experiences with the two products in the title.

That part is TRUE, and I very quickly apologized. But I never apologized for calling you an ass. :)

Well this is blown out of control I was just getting you going. My feelings were not really hurt.

Doesn't matter if a product costs 5 cents to build if people are comfortable with the asking price anyways.

No more trolling than Alex was accusing to be a hacker and an asshole. Or when trying to make me look stupid on my media player thread.

Truce please.

I am certain that neither of us are vindictive people. We are here to have fun, and your opinions and posts are just as valid as anyone else's.

Lot's of people arrive to CA and initially rub others the wrong way but then tone down and get along. That really hit home last month when I came across some of Miska's very first posts here from a few years ago: He came access as a really arrogant ass back then (but a VERY smart one :)).

This place is what we make it. Thankfully it is generally more civil and thoughtful than many of the other forums.

Yeah, I admit that in your media player thread (which started with a lot of bluster and proclamations but gained focus as you honed in on the value-add you were offering which is a tuned Embedded Win8 system), I bristled at your presumption of making the REGEN an internal part of it--since you never asked and we were not particularly warm with one another. So I pointed out a few facts about the REGEN and indicated I did not want my product to be an internal part of your project.

I am not a negative or selfish person, and I prefer to give others the benefit of the doubt and look for their best intentions. I can, have, and will do that with you. But if provoked I will issue a proportionate response.

So I am going to say this with sincerity: Let's put this behind us and be friends. Or at least truly civil. Okay?

I don't know "Blizzard" and i don't know "Superdad" (this names are both make me a little bit smiling in a good way ;) )

But what I know as a manufacturer and a reseller is, when it happened like we all could read it here, NO manufacturer creates a Site for an unpublished product and takes it online even when there is no link to it... unless he wants someone to find it to have free advertising!

and they can tell me whatever they want, you don't need to do this for make it work or check if it works. you can't even check it without a link... All companies check their site with an offline version or they need to get a new "internet guy" :)

In my opinion all your differences aren't worth your time !Its only a forum and not the end of the world :)
