    The Tides They Are-A Changing - Jay Z #TIDALforALL

    thumb.jpg

    1-Pixel.png

Nothing compares to celebrity when it comes to getting the word out and garnering support for a product. Since Jay Z's company recently agreed to purchase TIDAL, the service has gone from being well known in HiFi circles to being pushed by artists like Kanye West, Madonna, Coldplay, Rhianna, Beyonce, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk and more. It's really cool to see a product that many of us love for streaming lossless audio quality, be sprung into the mainstream. In a way it feels like our "HiFi baby" is leaving the nest. Tonight at 5PM Eastern Jay Z will stream a live press conference about the re-launch of TIDAL. It's expected TIDAL will announce some exclusives from artists like Kanye West and a second tier of service. TIDAL HIFI will remain lossless at $20 per month if purchased through the TIDAL website or $26 per month if purchased through the TIDAL iOS app (increased price because Apple takes a 30% cut of the sales price). The second tier of service is called TIDAL PREMIUM. This tier will stream 320 kbps MP3 quality and retail for $10 direct or $13 through the iOS App Store. I confirmed both the streaming quality and pricing with TIDAL headquarters in Oslo, Norway this morning.

well the times may be a changin ,but the streaming glitches still are there using Amarra SQ.

Amarra SQ works well with every music service but TIdal.

Can you try without sQ to see if the glitches remain for you? I have no glitches.

Ok I turned off Amarra SQ .Went to Chrome and started TIdal .Went to Macworld,Glitch on opening page . Went to another web site opened fine ,no glitch. Went to a sports web site I frequent,GLITCH! .

This has nothing to do with Amarra SQ ,the way I see it now. I never have glitches using Spotify or any other music service .

This is a Tidal problem .I have a fairly fast Imac with 8 gb ram and 120/20 mbps internet speeds.

I pretty much cannot use my computer while playing Tidal, whether its the Chrome Web Player or the Desktop app which is

    going away.

So what do I do. I play Tidal on my computer using Amarra SQ and use my Ipad to surf the web .

    PATHETIC!

It's weird because I just did the same thing as you (use Chrome, go to Macworld, etc...) and it's playing perfect.

Yeah I believe you . I was only using Chrome to play Tidal . I was using Firefox to surf the web .

I will try to use Chrome for surfing the web and playing Tidal and see if I get glitches .

My take on this is that streaming is just the music industry evolving, albeit at their historically slow pace and catching up to the video industry.

Before, we had radio and over the air broadcasts for TV. We have had cable TV for decades and satellite TV available more recently and now streaming is popular for video. We still have radio (does anyone listen to AM let alone FM anymore?), satellite radio is kind of a non-starter, and the current streaming services are the equivalent of Hulu and Netflix for vidieo. Entertainment today is more disposable than ever, not permanent, there is no physical presence and attachment to music for a large chunk of the population, streaming is encouraging that, more throw away entertainment. If one of the streaming services turned off the switch tomorrow all you would have would be memories: "Oh I used to listen to "BSB (better than sliced bread) Streaming".

Well I tried using Chrome to play and surf the web . Not using Amarra SQ. Pops, glitches ,galore.

Its just as bad as it has always been .I hopeful Qobuz and Deezer Elite will become avaialbe in the U.S. soon

Whats weird is Tidal plays perfectly on the Aries, just nothing else whether its my computer or the ios app.

In fact,Tidal plays better on ios then the computer.

Maybe if they got streaming to work properly I would give them some extra dollars .

But Tidal streaming sucks as much as it always has .

Jimmy - Are you the only one still having issues? Based on the frequency of your comments it sure seems like it.

Hey with only 12,000 paying customers , I doubt I'm the only one .

Tidal has not fixed their problems ,but Jay-Z sure tried to hype up

what ended as you stated ,a real snoozer .

Bring on Qobuz and Deezer Elite .

TIDAL and Amarra sQ are working beautifully for me. I may just be lucky. I hope jimmypowder's experience is an edge case and that TIDAL succeeds, although if they did not and Qobuz or Deezer were to come in and take over, I am sure I would adjust.

Well, I take that back. TIDAL plus Amarra sQ is, as of now, playing horribly. Clicks and pops galore. Unlistenable. But when I turn off Amarra sQ and send the TIDAL streaming signal directly to my DAC, it sounds fine.

Well bring on Qobuz to the states !!

I'm not doing a vpn . Love to see what they offer .

I know I tried out there iPhone app about 6 months ago and thought it was awful.

why not try a vpn? i have Qobuz here in USA and love it, its easy to do and sound quality on my iphone6 AND my mac mini is great with Amarra Sq to Schiit gungnir

TIDAL is the same and sounds great both have no dropouts crackles pops or hisses

agree with CA it is absolutely PERFECT even while i do my office charts on on practice fusion(my emr) or just search the web- no problemos

what Jay-Z and the others are doing is akin to what chaplin pickford griffin etal tried to do with UnitedArtists in the 1900's-give power and control back to the artists who deserve it and will give us higher SQ music to listen to

I spend enough money buying CDs that Tidal could save me a lot of money, as I would avoid a lot of duds. They have a lot of music, but frankly the jazz catalog is quite poor. Granted, I have a rather large collection, which consists almost exclusively of ripped CDs, but CDs I am interested in hearing simply aren't there. The catalog of avant-guard concert music is extremely thin.

Tidal plays perfectly on my PC using JRiver 20 as the virtual driver and I can surf the net with no hiccups. Works great on Sonos as well.

Is there a ultra-tier that would absolutely, 100% positively guarantee that my account would never, under any circumstances, stream any music from Jay Z, Kanye or Beyonce? I would pay extra for that service.

Unless you just blindly choose "curated" content / playlists, it only streams music you choose, so sounds like Tidal is a winner for you :)

Their classical selection is rather thin, as well. Qobuz regularly carries 3-4x more new releases each week :/

My sentiments exactly. Hopefully Jay Z hasn't also bought the NSA to monitor our posts.

Even when I turned Amarra SQ off , Tidal was awful , sounding like a broken record using the web player .

Interesting enough , it somewhat played better using the desktop Mac app .

Maybe because you can't download it anymore and it has less traffic now .

This is why Tidal is not for me. When SBT was newish, I used mine to listen to Radio Swiss classical broadcasts which had excellent SQ and of course was free. It would be grand to be able to listen to newer classical releases before committing to a purchase. Should an excellent classical streaming service arise, I will be very pleased.

The number who dislike CD quality is a tiny but vocal minority.

It's been changing since a lot of music is tracked at 24/96 and then down sampled to 16 Bit for CDs, plus they are using better converters, monitors and some are actually using less audio compression and limiting. Most of the top recording studios have replaced their old AD/DA converters and have even replaced their monitor systems over the last 30 years since CDs first came out. Tracking, mixing and mastering first in 24/96 sounds better when they move it over to 16 Bit than it does doing everything in 16 Bit. So in some ways, I do hear some improvement, it just boils down to how good they can track acoustic instruments and what they do during the entire process. Since a lot of pop music is now computerized, the computers go direct, so there's really no signal loss. recording synths is braindead easy, they don't have to worry about which mike to use, what room they are using, mike placement, etc. They produce everything on a computer and just add vocals and that's what a lot of dance/pop stuff is.

At least the 30 day trial has reappeared, so I'll give it another go in the hope that the streaming has improved. That and a desktop offline mode is all I want.

Where did you see the 30 day trial offer?

    Thanks,

    SeeHear

EDIT: Never mind - I just found it.
