Norton
I think track 5 here is the 1944 experimental stereo recording of final movement of Bruckner 8 Karajan/Preußische Staatskapelle. Obscure label with not a lot of detail - same track probably elsewhere on Qobuz too, anyone familiar with this able to verify? http://open.qobuz.com/album/v66qx1i1aep9b Link to comment

Norton
Really enjoying these guys’ high octane Tchaikovsky cycle: the allegro is most definitely delivered con fuoco in the final movement of Manfred, albeit without the organ part - don’t know if this is a recognised alternate version or not. http://open.qobuz.com/album/dsyvsosqxxkha Link to comment

Kirill Petrenko with the Berliner Philharmoniker is surprisingly impressive as well No love for the Paavo Jarvi set of the 4 symphonies (my usual choice) or an “also ran” in your view? The symphony really deserves a modern high res recording by a top flight conductor and orchestra. Link to comment
Norton
Best avoided if looking for some nice relaxing background music for Christmas gatherings... but if you are in that mythical group who use music for listening to your system, perhaps a good choice, so long as your speakers survive: http://open.qobuz.com/album/ao4wyo0wp3k4b WAM 1 Link to comment

Part 2 was released on SACD a few weeks ago, but the hi-res PCM was finally released today, and is now available on Qobuz. https://open.qobuz.com/album/ezar6p1kkjdla At $12.99 ($6.99 Sublime), this one is a no-brainer. Downloaded, PGGBed, and listening now. Already smiling... Yes, after a couple of weeks of anxious daily checking of the Qobuz new releases, there it is and absolutely worth the wait! austinpop 1 Link to comment

Norton
Returning to an old favourite, currently having a Rubbra-fest. If you are not familiar with this distinctive and comparatively obscure English composer, I ‘d suggest starting with #s 7, 5 and 4. http://open.qobuz.com/album/0095115994429 AnotherSpin 1 Link to comment
Popular Post Norton
I’ve never really got into Brahms, dry and stuffy has always been my impression based on the symphonies and never bothered to get to know more, but the adagio from Piano Concerto 1 is really getting to me - perhaps the saddest, loveliest, most poignant piece of music I’ve ever heard and utter genius of course: The Gilels recording perhaps especially poignant at this troubled time. However back in the day, I see this got a rosette and a key recording rating in the Penguin Guide, so don’t know how it passed me by. Thanks for the heads up, enjoying it now. Popular Post Norton
These (24/96) recordings in various distribution formats have been a staple of my listening over the years, but nice to now have all on SACD and at total bargain price of £23 (direct from Chandos) for the recently released set of 6 hybrid stereo/MCH discs: Michaelb4 and semente 2 Link to comment
Popular Post Norton
My try out of Roon2.0 unearthed this from a dusty and mysteriously unplayed corner of my collection. Very fine indeed, especially “There are seven that pull the thread“: semente and graham 1 1 Link to comment
Popular Post Norton
I used to be a big Bruckner ( and Klemperer) fan, but in recent years not so much. Lately, I’ve been trying again, starting with #4 but no recording, classic or modern really grabbed my interest so far. Then entirely unrelated, in my trial of 2.0, Roon Radio dredged this from a forgotten corner of my collection. Great performance and seems to have been recorded really well, excellent SQ on humble RBCD: austinpop, Musicophile, semente and 1 other 1 3 Link to comment
Popular Post Norton
Really enjoying this Mahler cycle (2 and 5 so far), well known I know but new to me. Something about Kubelik’s approach (I want to say neutral, but not in a boring way) coupled with excellent super detailed recording makes for addictive listening . Popular Post Norton
I’ve been a follower of this work ever since an Austrian colleague enthused about Rott as the guy that really influenced Mahler ( she put it less politely) and lived and died the way a proper 19th century romantic should ( briefly and tragically). This is now my go to recording- performance and SQ in a different league than previous offerings. And yes, many reminders of Mahler in this ( or should be vice versa?). semente and jiminlogansquare 2 Link to comment
