Microsoft updates?

Recommended Posts

I'm really tired of constantly waiting for Microsoft to come out with decent OS, the last time I was satisfied with their OS was NT4.0.

Yesterday when I arrived home, my PC with Win 10 Pro (64bit) updated, and the problems started.

1. My USB connected NuForce ICON2 did't worked any more

2. Then in the evening when I wanted to start listening music on my rig, through JRiver, not possible, kernel streaming driver

for HiFace EVO not working any more.

Anybody here with similar problems with Win 10 Version 1511, OS Build 10586.164?

Maybe try using a modern audio delivery method like WASAPI or ASIO. You can't expect technology like "Kernel streaming" from Windows XP to work forever.

Move to OSX if you are tired of Windows. Windows 10 works just fine for me.

First of all the non-linux os, I think Windows 7 Pro and the new Win 10 Pro are the best I have ever used. Without getting into the OS wars or which sounds better, etc. I will take Win 10 Pro in it's newest iteration over any. I like it much better than El Capitan or any other iteration of Windows save for 7 Pro which is on par.

Hi MM - First, I never thought I'd read about someone using good ole NT 4.0 on CA (even though I realize you aren't using it now). I was thinking about NT the other day and the fact that you had to reinstall the service packs if you made too many changes to the config and had to reboot after looking at the control panel for too long (joke, but not too far from the truth).

Anyway, can you give a bit more information about the ICON2 not working anymore? Did it just disappear from the OS? Is it working now? Do you get any errors in JRiver? What happens when you try to listen to music?

If you look through the updates that were installed, can you select recent updates and remove them one by one?

Hi Chris,

You are right NT4 is long gone, but I miss it. With win 8 I had a lot of headache, with Win 10 in the beginning I was very pleased, then my Start button stopped working every other day, now this... My feeling is that they just want new things going out, while I care more for things functioning as they should. I exploded because it is a lot of let say small problems in last few years, that accumulated and Microsoft is not even trying to solve the problem!

If you ask me today, I would immediately switch to Mac, but as an engineer I'm not able to do it, because of the software. But one thing that I will probably do is go Aurender way, plus some macbook for library management.

Back to the problem, the Nuforce after update was not recognized, than after some playing with restarts/driver updates I managed to be recognized as generic USB speakers and now is working.

For the JRiver part, I receive this message:

For years I used kernel streaming, because M2Tech suggested KS as preferred way for HiFace EVO, and to my ears KS sounded better than WASAPI. Now I tried WASAPI and with it is working, and without possibility to reference it against KS I would say that with Win 10 they sounds very, very similar. Maybe I can even say that WASAPI is better.

I am using Roon and have done so for 6 months with Windows 8.1. So was fearful of upgrading to Win10 and resisted for a couple of months, but the reminders that I should REALLY DO IT OR THE WORLD MIGHT COME TO AN END finally got me. The upgrade was flawless and I haven't experienced any problem whatsoever with my music-dedicated laptop (fingers crossed, only done it one week ago...).

Something no to consider. Once you get it working the way you like turn off the auto update feature. Same with all your applications. If you treat like an appliance (sort of like the Aurender) then it will provide you trouble free listening bliss.

Like that's changed a lot since. The only thing that's really changed is the far more powerful devices we're using, so the 'misery' of sorting 'issues' out don't seem so painful with the quicker turnaround.

Windows 10 and greatly reduced the end user flexibility in managing how updates are applied to the system.

I disabled the wuauserv service:

From an elevated powershell prompt (Click on start, type in powershell, right click and run as admin):

set-service wuauserv -startuptype "disabled"

It's hammer type approach that will require you to periodically enable and start the service to check for updates.

I have a 2.0 computer and HTPC that don't do much so that is my approach with them.

Go ahead switch to Mac! You can run Windows on Mac! Best of both worlds.

Best strategy: find the applications running on Mac, second best: try to see if the applications run under WINE, so that you don't need Windows.

Third and fourth options: use Bootcamp to install Windows, or else use Win in a Virtual Machine if you really need Windows.

To make a long story short, I discovered the existence of GWX Control Panel here:

How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8 - Page 90 - Windows 7 Help Forums

... which led me to this site:

Ultimate Outsider: Using GWX Control Panel to Permanently Remove the 'Get Windows 10' Icon

... which the above image shows in action.

GWX Control panel works quite well. It sorted the Microsoft harassment problem I had continually experienced after my last Microsoft Update session in December.

BTW, running Windows 7 Professional X64.

For home/audio use next platform will probably be MAC, but for work, I use CAD apps. like CATIA V5, SolidWorks, Siemens NX and they require special graphic cards, so I think it's not possible to run those on boot camp.

You using Quadro cards? Or which cards. I'm interested to see if I could run them on a Mac. More for my research. I work at a Mac shop and we build systems for high end applications. Thanks!

I might have agreed with you on Win 10 if Microsoft hadn't deprecated both Aero Glass and Image Backup for Win 8.0.

Those are my favourites for Windows 7 and things I simply can't live without.

Windows 10 is great to use, but the auto-updates are a worry. I got presented with my niece's laptop last week because an update had rendered her on-board sound-card inoperative and she needed it for her Japanese class at school. After all the usual fiddling with drivers, re-installing the card and various "fixes" from online forums, all to no avail, I ended up loaning her my spare Dragonfly DAC to get her out of trouble. To be continued...........

The mandatory auto-update requirement is a major reason that I am extremely reluctant to upgrade to Win 10. I very much prefer to select what updates I install, especially since many so called "important" updates are irrelevant to my installation. Critical security updates are another matter.

It's probably the same update, they did some bigger changes to audio part of OS! in my opinion...

You can easily disable automatic Windows 10 updates with the free program ShutUp10, which also allows you to address any privacy related concerns. Highly recommended!
Good to know. Thanks for posting the link.
