Auralic Aries (Hardware) - Impressions and Information

Recommended Posts

There is a problem with the latest beta firmware update. I have 2 Aries units, one is connected by wireless and the other is connected by Ethernet. The wireless one upgraded firmware and runs fine, the one connected by Ethernet upgraded firmware but now cannot connect to the network.

The defunct unit reboots entirely as normal but there is just no way to connect to the network.

Same setup here, but no problems at all.

mine was connected via ethernet and wi-fi is off

what drives me mad is... I *did not* install any update: if an update was installed (can't reach my Aries and check) it happened automatically without any prompt/notice/alert

I was playing music from Roon when the Aries suddenly vanished from my network

If the firmware has been withdrawn, there must be a known issue and I'm sure they will be working on it. It is a bit frustrating, but that's the risk of being a beta tester.

The new firmware was the best sounding yet and multi room was working a treat and something I'd been waiting for.

yes. just... I can't see how a fix can be applied to a device that does not connect anymore to the network =:-/

hope they do ;)

Is there a way to restore to factory settings without connecting to it over the network? I think I recall that the firmware defaulted to a wireless mode.

Just tried mine and I'm seeing the same issue, DS cannot see my Aries. I have a wired connection.

I upgraded to Firmware Beta 4.0 version 5 this morning & experienced issues like only playing the first song in a playlist whether in Tidal or from my NAS local library.

So I switched back to the latest non-Beta release 3.3

Chris from Auralic Support (who is excellent, communicates very quickly) just advised me that Firmware Beta 4.0 version 4 is now available again, so I downloaded.

I really like Beta 4.0 version 4. Stable and sound quality is superb.

I have the exact same problem with my Aries after installing the beta5 firmware though ethernet cable. Just got word from Auralic that the unit is going to have to be replaced. So this is really not good news as they are unable to fix this issue by pushing any new firmware to the unit or perform a hard reset so that it can roll back to the last stable release.

Unfortunately, it needs a return to manufacturer for a factory reset.

ah, we must have responded at the same time. I was told return for factory reset whereas you are under the impression that the unit needs to be replaced. Either way, at least I can stop messing with it trying to fix it.

Appears only wired network configurations are affected. My wireless Aries was fine with FW Beta 4.0 version 5, though today I see its automatically reverted to version 4. Oops!

I just got an email from testflight that they rolled back to version 4. Being unlucky with my Aries push update (ethernet) they will send me a shipping label to send the unit to China for a factory reset.

same here :-/

a real big pita!

they definitely need to build into the fw a way to load software updates from a USB key or something

oh, and... hope they also fix auto-updating happening while the Aries is working in RAAT mode

(they do not happpen if the unit is being used from their own app)

Is there no way to get it to switch to wireless? Or a remote key combination to reset? Seems crazy is not! I guess I best email Mr Wang

tried, as they suggested, a reset first but even when I got Aries' wi-fi hotspot to show I couldn't connect to it from my iPad

I guess this firmware broke something there too :-/

at least, as Mr. Wang told me, after this accident they will add *very soon* a feature to load firmware from a USB key

(I thought it was already there. should have been there since the beginning! )

Just to recap, if you voluntare as a betatester, one could risk to brick the whole unit for return to factory to reset? - really!

I am out of this program for sure until an USB fix becomes available. This is just too risky :(

Is there a safe way to return from beta to non-beta?

My unit is currently switched off, but if I switch it on to un-tick the beta program in the LDS could I risk that a new (brick) beta version will be loaded and installed if the Aries is connected to Internet? So, must one disconnect the internet connection before doing this and then reconnect the Aries for the non-beta version to be loaded?

not really, unless... *the* perfect storm arrives (as it did yesterday)

in my case perfect storm means:

- a new beta was released too early

- there's (was?) a bug that makes the Aries auto-update (no alert/user permission: nothing!) when it's being used in RAAT mode

(the above doesn't happen if it's being used by Lightning DS)

you can safely switch your Aries on and revert (opt-out of beta): the firmware causing all our headaches has been pulled ;)

I will say that despite this being a very bad situation once again Wang has responded in what I think is an exemplary way. I emailed this morning about my Aries being bricked, he responded almost immediately, and they will ship me an Aries from their warehouse on Monday with a shipping label to return mine.

I agree this situation should never have arrived and I'm sure there will be consequences given what I read in the email response but given the situation has arisen, in my eyes at least the response has been great. We're all human and make mistakes, it's how we respond that is more telling!

I am relieved I preferred the wi fi connection and just switched to that last weekend and that my Aries was in standby when the new Beta was launched. I use LDS so I gather I would have been safe anyway but just in case, I yanked the ethernet cable from the router.
