Have you tried HQ Player converting PCM to DSD256 ?

No, I'm afraid not! Although I've heard only good things about it, I stopped searching for a new player the minute I heard LMS/Squeezlite for the first time. It's so rich and organic sounding in comparison to any of Audirvana's versions, I can't think of anything better... :)

i guess this means no Linux driver support for Exasound ?

thanks

I think there are: check with exaSound directly.

....Such as a Meitner MA-1 DAC, which is one of the best designed Galvanic Isolated USB DACs.

I am sorry but there is no galvanic isolation of any kind in Meitner MA-1... (well I guess you could say it has toslink...)

linux driver - have checked with exaSound - they did respond quickly saying it's not available. not a major deal breaker i guess for a player (be it squeezelite or HQ or something else that people love to use) windows and mac os are providing more then enough options.

it's just me liking the linux :)

on the other side they do provide extra features with their driver(s) for win and mac so one can complain but not too much :)

Yes, I believe you are right, so I stand corrected. I do not remember from where and from whom I was told that (though I am sure it was from a trusted source) but at the time that was my understanding.

Hello guys,

I am using my Exa e20 mk II plug to SOTM USB. Audio is playing perfectly on my Harbeth speaker via JRiver. Latest driver for Windows PC 8.1 installed last night.

I just want to ask if Exasound driver can be added/show in Windows 8.1 playback device? The thing is i cannot use my speakers when listening & watching video content online and playing video games because the exa driver is not shown in windows playback devices. I dont want to use extra speakers because of this.

Please advise what to do.

Thanks,

Jhameeh

Does anyone know if the e20 needs a handshake with the PC? Does it draw any power from the USB? :)

When you install the ExaSound driver, a "dashboard" program is also installed. When you plug in the E20, the dashboard program starts up. It shows the sample rate and you can adjust the E20's extremely good volume control in 0.5 db steps by either click and dragging the slider, or by pointing at the slider and using the mouse scroll wheel

Any power drawn from the USB connection is probably minimal

As an e20 user I know all that... but that doesn't exactly answer my questions.

The power consumption is 90mV. You can see this selecting "About This Mac" under the Apple symbol, then you select System Report... , then USB. You should see the exaSound device with the power consumption et all. I guess it needs the handshake.

Roch, did you mean 90mA at 5V = 450mW, or 90mW? Thanks.

Hey guys check out the matching high end low noise linear power supply I built for my E20. I combined this with a clock upgrade and the transformation in sound was drastic! I wish I had a E22 to compare it to. I have a feeling the upgrades I made may outweigh the upgrades of what was done with the E22. Unless of course you listen to headphones. I didn't upgrade the headphone amp. But the bonus of the original E20 is it only draws 1 amp compared to 2 of the E22. So a much better power supply can be built for cheaper. E20 owners think twice before selling to upgrade. There's a lot of potential that can be unlocked in your DAC!

Could you give us the 'recipe' and where to get the parts. Will it work for the E22?

I could build E20 units for $300. But this design is for a 1 amp supply. E22 needs a 2 amp supply so it would require a new supply design. Clock upgrade involves removing old clock and soldering in a new one. Takes good soldering skills and the right tools. I wouldn't recommend trying with a soldering iron. Air gun only as its a SMT component.

Nice. Are you aiming for a job at exaSound with that design?! :)

Yeah those are just the cheap aluminum end panels that came with the case. Thicker aluminum panels could be CNC machined. But it's expensive to get things like that CNC machined unless it's done in volume.
