Audirvana Plus: Direct Mode

Recommended Posts

Just one thing to check: tried it with tos link?? From memory my mac-mini which is connected via toslink hasn't "suffered" from this issue.

Also, no further issues with macbookpro (connected by USB) - and have been hitting the music hard as have new HD600s that I am enjoying.

A further thought: how long has this issue been around??? Since I only purchased my Schitt equipment mid May 2012, I cannot tell if this issue existed prior....

Is this only a mac / Bifrost issue or across the board? Strange no mention in the on-going Schitt Bifrost thread.

Not that is worries me much - if I stop / pause playback - or should say I did, the track plays fine.

It only happens with USB, and it has been reported by multiple users on one of the other forums (referenced earlier in this thread). Happens with different players, no upsampling, etc. - it just appears to be a glitch in the USB implementation that occurs with some Macs (haven't heard anyone with a PC complaining). For some folks it happens very frequently (some days I get it every few minutes) or only once or twice a week - either way, it's annoying :/

With my setup, though, USB (esp. integer mode) sounds a lot better (subjectively) than optical via Toslink, so I'm putting up with it for now . . .

I'm enjoying the latest beta - no incipient kernel panics I can detect, so that's been improved - but thought I'd point out that the beta tends to leave the USB port in an unstable / unusable state for other players. If I exit the Audirvana Plus beta and try to then use one of the other third-party players with the same USB port, I just get a very loud burst of static :/

I've found if I start up the regular Audirvana Plus, switch to optical, then back to USB, then exit Audirvana Plus, the USB port is properly released / reset and can be used by other players. Probably just something with the the custom code used to enable direct / integer mode and not properly resetting the port when stopping play / exiting the player.

Sigh- whatever. There was no offense intended on my part, as witness the smile in the post.

Mike says the beta asked him to overwrite his existing install; it did not, for whatever reason, do that here, and I make rather careful notes of software installations.

I think everyone appreciates your point of view as well as your willingness to share your experiences as you learn about audio and enjoy learning about and listening to the cool equipment and software you have purchased.

It is also admirable that you ingratiate yourself with some manufacturers and developers, and share what you learn here. That takes both time and dedication, again both admirable traits. Certainly, I am not willing to spend as much time and money as you invest in what is essentially a hobby for me right now. Nice to see the experiences of someone who is.

Paul

Paul,

In truth, I did not notice the smiley face. My vision is obviously declining. Age brings that on, I am afraid.

I do not want to go on about that misunderstanding as it can become boorish of me. I obviously missed your humor, which I was not in the mode (spelled correctly) to appreciate. I thought my intention on mwheelerk's behalf was obvious and your characterization of me seemed a stark mismatch.

The scales I was weighing on mwheelerk's behalf (not a big effort) was to impart what I experienced 4 times earlier today that allowed me to keep the published version and install the beta the first time around, followed by various uninstall/installs configurations in an effort to get the beta to work, which would not have happened with any configuration as this newly released beta and the W4S Dac2 are incompatible over USB.

I thought I was providing mwheelerk with useful information and the steps he could expect in advance of the actual installation process. His subsequent lack of response persuaded me that my intention and his needs were not a match. That's fine with me and a comment from him was not necessary

For clarity: Clicking on the beta dmg file for 1.3.9.3 starts the installation. If an existing installation already exists, the moment one moves the icon for the new build (beta) over to the Application icon, a dialogue opens up giving the installer three (3) choices: 1. Keep both installations, 2. Replace existing installation, 3. Cancel. This sequence occurred each time.

It seems I did go on about this. Next time, I'll be smarter when it comes to me responding to you and spare you the audible sighs by exchanging with something more engaging. Also appreciate your reflection of me as you perceive me. That was a very nice touch.

Enjoy your evening,

Richard

Well looks like it's going to take more than adjusting power saver preferences to prevent audio dropouts with 1.3.9.3, about 2 hours into a new session I heard a couple of clicks followed by a short buzz then the system crashed. When I got things restarted I was greeted with a dialog box stating the restart was necessary due to a problem with details pointing to a kernel panic caused by A+.

The betas certainly sound better than the latest production release; however stability has taken a real hit. Hopefully Damien can resolve these issues as the SQ of Direct Mode with Integer playback has spoiled me to the point I don't want to go back to the old A+.

Running A+ beta 1.3.9.3 - Lion 10.7.4 on 2010 Mac mini into Audiophilleo 2 into Wyred4Sound Dac 2 and getting unbelievable sound with direct mode & integer selected. Have listened to 4 albums so far without any issues (fingers crossed). I am seeing steady improvements with each beta release. Nice work Damien :)

Did try using the W4S USB input per Richards post earlier. I knew the Dac 2 was not integer capable with the current USB drivers but did not know it would not do direct - same results, no play back unless I uncheck direct mode and integer.

Back to the audiophilleo 2 + W4S Dac 2 for a sonic experience :) Hopefully W4S will release updated drivers in the near future!

Fully agree on the need for updated W4S drivers, while the combination of the audiophilleo 2 + W4S Dac 2 really sound great with these betas I still want the option of going USB if needed.

A+ is excellent. I'm familiar with Amarra and PM, and I'm hearing subtleties on familiar recordings I've not heard before. I use an Off-Ramp 5, so neither Direct nor Integer modes work (M2Tech driver limitation). Regardless, A+ outshines Amarra and PM in my system. Great work, Damien!

Damien,

Update on listening to A+ 1.3.9.3 tonight through audiophilleo into W4S DAC 2.

Sounds great and have had no drop outs. However, most of my listening has been to 16/44 material but when I switch to a 24/96 material I get white/pink type noise....A+ shows the file being played as 24/96 but the DAC display in A+ shows 16/96 instead of 24/96. If I close and reopen A+ the 24/96 material plays and everything displays correctly in A+. Going from 24/96 back to 16/44 does not seem to cause problems.

Thanks,

Chuck

Damien,

I updated a friend's computer (10.7.4) with a W4Sound 2 DAC. It played the first 2 songs great with no problems and then it would not play direct mode. Tried restarting, clearing prefs loading a new version, ect. Here's the log.

One other thing I have noticed with the beta version of A+ is it no longer updates the play count in iTunes. Has anyone else noticed this?

It has been updating play counts at least in my playlists. I don't have play counts turned on (view) other than in playlist.

I am just finishing a first evening of listening to the beta. I am very impressed and excited with the return of integer mode. When I made the change to Lion and lost integer mode with PM I was never quite satisfied. Something seemed lacking, both a punch and spaciousness to my music was just not there. Trying Amarra did not do anything for me, it was more of the same. Nothing really bad, nothing horrible but not quite there. With this Audivrana version my system sounds restored, vibrant again. My last album of the night is one I am very familiar with and love and it sounds remarkable. I try not to be too effusive about things too soon but this is exciting.

I'm feeling the same - the music seems much more "direct" and "alive" with this return to integer mode. It's great to know that software upgrades can offer such exciting changes :)

Agreed. Can't believe what I hear. This is a "Direct Mode" which is worthy of the name.:)

Paul,

It seems I did go on about this. Next time, I'll be smarter when it comes to me responding to you and spare you the audible sighs by exchanging with something more engaging. Also appreciate your reflection of me as you perceive me. That was a very nice touch.

Richard

It is a fine day to listen to music!

Don't read overmuch into the "sigh"- I just needed a mechanism whereby you would be absolutely certain I was not replying in anger.

The "jumpy" comment was a gentle joke on how quickly you were replying to comments. I could have said something like "you are on the bounce!" or "you are on the ball!" and been clearer.

For the record however, though there are a few people here I am not overly tolerant of, I do not count you among them.

And second and more to the point, the Audivarna+ Beta did not bring up a dialog box here as you describe.

Therefore, I do advise a measure of caution when installing it if one has any concerns about the existing working installation. As is true in any software beta, extra care should always be taken.

I give up.

For now I'm going back to 1.3.5. It may not sound quite as good as the latest beta direct mode but it is stable.

I'll try again once the dropouts, track skipping and album skipping are ironed out.

Damien, we all appreciate your efforts to get better sound so please don't give up.

Paul, I believe the "file overwrite" protection feature Richard describes is a feature added to the OS in 10.7 ("Lion"). If you are using an earlier version (e.g., Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc.), OS X will not prompt you to save the earlier version - don't remember if you're on 10.7 or earlier. Handy new feature.

I download but prog freeze as soon as a track selected in ITunes this happens weather direct mode, or integer unchecked, I am using 09 MacBook Pro/ Snow Leapard run in 64bit mode. When software installed it replaces old version in application folder????

Hi John - I thought that machine was on 10.7.4, but honestly, I have not looked in a while. I'm not sure why the overwrite warning didn't happen, but I think I will reload MacOS on the machine tonight and put a fresh copy out there.

I had a minor crash this morning but I attribute it to lack of coffee and paying attention. At startup I have PM linked to iTunes to start at the same time. I launched Audivrana also. I then hit play on iTunes and crash boom bam the dark screen with warning dropped. So I had to reboot the computer and even restart one more time before things were back to normal. I think I will remove PM from the dock and I hope that will break the link otherwise I will search preferences to turn it off.

Still sounds awesome after my little trevail.

Hmmm. Going to have to look again at mine - play count maybe updating but I have been looking at "date last played". All my "date last played " ended on 5/29 when I downloaded first beta. Can you check this behavior on your system?

Oh dear, after enjoying the initial version - the latest updates won't work for me. Just get stuttering in Direct mode (no Integer). I've sent Damien the log.

Okay I just turned on Last Played in View Options and the songs I played this morning reflect an updated date and time.

Thanks for checking. Apparently I deactivated the iTunes play position control at some point. When I deselected it it still did not work on the next playback. Closed and reopened A+ and the setting took effect and is now updating play count and date last played :)
