Introducing CA Scrobbles

it would be very cool if the software on the forum side allowed all sorts of music players that do scrobbling to connect. I think even MOG does scrobbling.

This is just not something I want to do. It is my opinion that there is already too much internet behavior monitoring going on; I don't want to volunteer for more.<br />

I was thinking about jumping to JRiver, but that it can do this gives me pause.<br />

It's more a concern for security and privacy.<br />

When Chris C.'s statistics show that he hasn't played music for a few days, does that mean he is out of town? Personal data privacy laws are lax in the USA compared to other countries, so it's bad without voluntarily giving additional information.<br />

Hi mlauria - Entering additional information is possible via comments to any of the scrobbles. However, there are better threads for more detailed info such as the Album of the Evening thread and the new Good Album Listening thread might be a better place for such info. List are valuable in my opinion. it's an easy way for people to share and discover without much effort or time spent. <br />

Hi AudioDoctor - I am working on more apps being able to scrobble to CA. The site can accept scrobbles from any application. It's a matter of the software developer working with me to get it done. It doesn't take much work either.<br />

Hi Brian A - Fortunately this is all voluntary. Nobody is monitoring anything. Each user elects to share his information with others. Also, if a user's stats show no music played for a period of time this could mean a plethora of things like the feature was disabled or the user has other playback applications, etc... Right now only my JRiver server scrobbles. When I use Linux or Mac I can't scrobble at the moment. Scrobbling has nothing to do with personal data privacy. Each user voluntarily publishes the information. Once information is published to any public website all reasonable expectations of privacy related to the published content are voluntarily relinquished. Heck, here in the U.S. when people put trash in a can outside their house they've lost all reasonable expectations of privacy according to the court system.<br />

Hi baxtus - No shame in listening to ABBA. Just an example. I actually listen to ABBA, Britney Spears, and Milli Vanilli all of which were mentioned in the article above. In fact I'm listening to Christina Aguilera as I type this. Check my scrobbles :~)<br />

It's not compulsory, with JRiver or anything else. JRiver is not 'monitoring', it is doing what you ask it to do. You would complain if it didn't. And nothing is going to the JRiver company. I tried iTunes experimentally on Windows. Since then it sends me emails trying to sell me crap music at high prices. So it is 'aware' of me. JRiver isn't.<br />

Re the thing itself. I tried it last night. Works fine. Will be useful as I might find music that I am unaware of. I have turned it off now as I have only 'regular' music that probably won't be of interest to anyone.

So useful yes, but maybe not the best for looking professional in CA's case ?<br />

at first I thought this to be an excellent idea. I actually never posted on the Album of the evening thread but but about 20 or so albums because of this thread. So i thought it might be a wonderful idea for getting inspirations. But looking at the "live feed" all I get is what you see, no explanations no subjective glorious "this is the best album in the world and if you like x then you love y and so on". <br />

H Claude - I consider CA Scrobbles as more of a quick thing to scroll through for some interesting music and extra information like sample rate etc... It's kind of cool to see what others are listening to and to see how much high resolution material people are playing etc...<br />

I don't consider CA Scrobbles as a replacement for Album of the Evening. The two compliment each other and offer different services for readers.<br />

Hi Peter - Thanks for the honest feedback. I believe your comments say more about you and your tastes than the actual CA Scrobbles feature. Nothing wrong with your tastes, they just differ significantly from mine and many readers / new computer audiophiles. <br />

Your comments remind me of a certain (former) audio dealer in NYC who told potential customers to get the hell out of his store when they brought in iPods. Instead of embracing new technology and bringing more new people into this hobby, old school audiophile thinking has taken its toll and turned more people away than anything. Convenience, coolness, and sound quality are not mutually exclusive anymore. <br />

I like scrobbling at the track level. We already have the Album level in another thread. Plus, the fact that scrobbling is automatic makes it ulta simple for the busy CA readers.<br />

Hi Claude - No date on the iTunes integration. Currently the integration will have to be through an add-on app (hint Amarra).<br />

After I played a few tunes I checked out the real time on this and there I was. Really neat! Fun to see what everyone is listening to.

I noticed some of your scrobbles show additional detail in the album field [Album: Meet Me In London (24 bit / 192 kHz Super Hi Def Edition Naim Label)]. <br />

Are you manually entering that when you rip or is there a way in db poweramp to autopopulate the additional data into the album name? <br />

I enter that stuff when either ripping or converting a downloaded album. It comes in very handy. <br />

If I could make a tiny suggestion, perhaps a link to the scrobbles along the left side of the page where the rest of the site links are would be a good idea.
