Introducing CA Scrobbles

    ca-scrobbles.pngScrobble /?skr?b?l/

    Verb

(third-person singular simple present scrobbles, present participle scrobbling, simple past and past participle scrobbled)

To publish one's music-listening habits via software, as counted events when songs or albums are played, to selected internet services in order to track them over time, out of curiosity and/or to make them visible to others. (Source: Wiktionary)

June 16, 2011 the Album of the Evening forum topic was started on CA. This topic encourages readers to share what they are listening to each evening. Over 1200 replies and hundreds of new music discoveries later it's time to take things to the next level with CA Scrobbles. CA Scrobbles enables users of JRiver Media Center, version 17.0.80 or newer, to automatically post on Computer Audiophile without leaving the application or interrupting a listening session. Information such as track, artist, album, bit depth, and sample rate are automatically published to the CA Scrobbles page in real time. Users who prefer to keep their ABBA, Britney Spears, or Milli Vanilli listening habits to themselves can easily do so by creating a simple filter within JRiver. Read more to start sharing and discovering.

    How CA Scrobbles Works

Once CA Scrobbles is configured within JRiver Media Center (instructions below) information about each track a user listens to is automatically published to the CA Scrobbles web page here on Computer Audiophile. The published information is only sent to Computer Audiophile when playback moves to a different track (automatically or manually) or stops and only if playback advances past the half-way point of a track. Thus, readers needn't worry about publishing listening habits when they are simply sampling a bunch of tracks looking for that diamond in the rough. The actual scrobble happens in a background thread within JRiver and has no impact on the user interface or sonic quality. Below is a sample of the information sent up to the site via CA Scrobbles.

it would be very cool if the software on the forum side allowed all sorts of music players that do scrobbling to connect. I think even MOG does scrobbling.

This is just not something I want to do. It is my opinion that there is already too much internet behavior monitoring going on; I don't want to volunteer for more.

I was thinking about jumping to JRiver, but that it can do this gives me pause.

Is iTunes monitoring me already? How do I tell?

You listened to Neil Young's "A man needs a maid" 23 times in a row last night for the fifth night straight...

Pray, tell me please, why I would need to be ashamed of listening to ABBA?

This sounds interesting, is there any way this could be extended to the Mac/iTunes platform users?

It's more a concern for security and privacy.

When Chris C.'s statistics show that he hasn't played music for a few days, does that mean he is out of town? Personal data privacy laws are lax in the USA compared to other countries, so it's bad without voluntarily giving additional information.

It is partly me. You are a doctor who probably comes home every night. I don't have that routine.

... I admit to having run across, and listened to, "The Archie's - Sugar, Sugar" the other night. How did you know?

Hi mlauria - Entering additional information is possible via comments to any of the scrobbles. However, there are better threads for more detailed info such as the Album of the Evening thread and the new Good Album Listening thread might be a better place for such info. List are valuable in my opinion. it's an easy way for people to share and discover without much effort or time spent.

Hi AudioDoctor - I am working on more apps being able to scrobble to CA. The site can accept scrobbles from any application. It's a matter of the software developer working with me to get it done. It doesn't take much work either.

Hi Brian A - Fortunately this is all voluntary. Nobody is monitoring anything. Each user elects to share his information with others. Also, if a user's stats show no music played for a period of time this could mean a plethora of things like the feature was disabled or the user has other playback applications, etc... Right now only my JRiver server scrobbles. When I use Linux or Mac I can't scrobble at the moment. Scrobbling has nothing to do with personal data privacy. Each user voluntarily publishes the information. Once information is published to any public website all reasonable expectations of privacy related to the published content are voluntarily relinquished. Heck, here in the U.S. when people put trash in a can outside their house they've lost all reasonable expectations of privacy according to the court system.

Hi baxtus - No shame in listening to ABBA. Just an example. I actually listen to ABBA, Britney Spears, and Milli Vanilli all of which were mentioned in the article above. In fact I'm listening to Christina Aguilera as I type this. Check my scrobbles :~)

Hi agentsmith - Mac / iTunes work is in progress.
It's not compulsory, with JRiver or anything else. JRiver is not 'monitoring', it is doing what you ask it to do. You would complain if it didn't. And nothing is going to the JRiver company. I tried iTunes experimentally on Windows. Since then it sends me emails trying to sell me crap music at high prices. So it is 'aware' of me. JRiver isn't.

Re the thing itself. I tried it last night. Works fine. Will be useful as I might find music that I am unaware of. I have turned it off now as I have only 'regular' music that probably won't be of interest to anyone.

I hope I am allowed to say it - don't get angry, but I think this is silly.
To me it looks a bit like children's play garden. :-)

For professional reasons, yes, then something like this is nice. Here is an example of that : http://ha1.heartprofit.nl/profit/index.php?board=5.0
over 20K of "scrobbled" topics being the auto-published Release Notes to our ERP package.

So useful yes, but maybe not the best for looking professional in CA's case ?
Just saying, and my own opinion of course ...

Regards,
Peter

PS: Doing this at the track level makes all worthless anyway.

    Hi,
at first I thought this to be an excellent idea. I actually never posted on the Album of the evening thread but but about 20 or so albums because of this thread. So i thought it might be a wonderful idea for getting inspirations. But looking at the "live feed" all I get is what you see, no explanations no subjective glorious "this is the best album in the world and if you like x then you love y and so on".
Will watch..
H Claude - I consider CA Scrobbles as more of a quick thing to scroll through for some interesting music and extra information like sample rate etc... It's kind of cool to see what others are listening to and to see how much high resolution material people are playing etc...

I don't consider CA Scrobbles as a replacement for Album of the Evening. The two compliment each other and offer different services for readers.

I'm glad you've found some good music so far in the Album thread.
Ok Chris,
I was maybe a little too fast with my first enthusiasm (happens quite often) and then reality bites.
I guess I will have to contribute to the Album of the Evening thread so it won't die.
When will the iTunes Integration arrive?
Hi Peter - Thanks for the honest feedback. I believe your comments say more about you and your tastes than the actual CA Scrobbles feature. Nothing wrong with your tastes, they just differ significantly from mine and many readers / new computer audiophiles.

Your comments remind me of a certain (former) audio dealer in NYC who told potential customers to get the hell out of his store when they brought in iPods. Instead of embracing new technology and bringing more new people into this hobby, old school audiophile thinking has taken its toll and turned more people away than anything. Convenience, coolness, and sound quality are not mutually exclusive anymore.

I don't consider a single page that displays real time information about music listening habits of users to be unprofessional looking.

I like scrobbling at the track level. We already have the Album level in another thread. Plus, the fact that scrobbling is automatic makes it ulta simple for the busy CA readers.
Hi Claude - No date on the iTunes integration. Currently the integration will have to be through an add-on app (hint Amarra).
I noticed some of your scrobbles show additional detail in the album field [Album: Meet Me In London (24 bit / 192 kHz Super Hi Def Edition Naim Label)].

Are you manually entering that when you rip or is there a way in db poweramp to autopopulate the additional data into the album name?

Thanks.

Hi Stryker63 - How cool, CA Scrobbles has already lead to an informational inquiry :~)

I enter that stuff when either ripping or converting a downloaded album. It comes in very handy.
If I could make a tiny suggestion, perhaps a link to the scrobbles along the left side of the page where the rest of the site links are would be a good idea.

Hey guys, if you want to get some real info about musical tastes at CA take a look at this thread http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Album-Eve-Reviews and contribute a bit of your time and energy. This could end up being a very useful and interesting thread.

This is the same thread Chris C. mentioned earlier, except I renamed it today to make the title more descriptive. Please think about contributing to it, and after you do, contribute. :)
