Damien, thanks for the continual updates. How high is AU/VST support in the to-do list? Is this planned for the 1.0 version?

 

Asking as I would like to use digital room correction with Audirvana. I have a fairly well treated listening room with all the first reflection points covered with absorbers and some diffusors behind the listening position. I want to do some minor low freq tweaking digitally as it is not practical to do this with treatment (would need 30cm deep bass traps all around my living room).

 

 

This is ARC by IK Multimedia for example.

 

I understand that Audirvana is marketed as "No equalizer, no trendy special effects, just the music" but I believe this would be very appealing functionality to a large segment of the audiophile market.

You could use Audio Hijack Pro to host AU/VST plugins, inserting it between the output of Audirvana and your DAC.

 

However, I expect that would negate the efforts Damien has made to enhance sound quality by reducing CPU activity correlated with the audio.

 

On the other hand, you have nothing to lose by trying it. There's a 30-day demo of Audio Hijack Pro.

Thanks for the tip but I have been using fidelia (which supports AU/vst) whenever I play bass heavy music where the room response is particularly bothersome.

Damien, have migrated to lion without a good consideration. Now my 192k music can no longer work.

 

Any plan from you to make audiovana work with lion? Or it has to be after lion works with integer mode?

Alphe, Audirvana works with Lion. It is Apple that has removed int mode support from its USB Audio drivers.

 

You didn't provide any info about your setup...

How is your DAC connected ? Do you use manufacturer supplied driver ? In this case, has the manufacturer issued a Lion compatible one ?

Can you send me the debug info from Audirvana menu (launch command when playing) ?

I tried again, and for the first time, the audiovana did run with lion, but since I made the adjustment (ticked off the integer mode), it failed to reopen again.

After listening extensively to Audirvana on my Macpro, I am finally changing over from PC and purchasing a new MAC mini as my main music server, and I have been pondering the following questions:

 

1. Music File Storage

If Audirvana first loads and decodes the music files into memory (RAM) prior to playing them, does that then mean it is irrelevant where the files are stored ... be it an internal SSD, external hard drive (connected via USB or firewire) or a NAS.

 

i.e. is the extra expense of an SDD drive no longer warranted using Audirvana?

 

If this is correct does it logically follow that installing my music files onto a NAS and then streaming them via wired ethernet to the MAC mini will not compromise sound quality in any way and be a cost effective way to go as Audirvana always loads and plays the music files from RAM?

 

2. Lion vs Leopard OS

I have been away from the forum for a while but picked up that integer mode no longer works due to upgrades made to the apple OS system. Is this the Lion OS they are talking about? Would this also apply to automatic upgrades to the OS on my MACpro I purchased 18 months ago? How do you stop the upgrades stuffing up integer mode?

 

What advantages if any does the leopard OS have over lion?

 

3. Should I convert my files from ALAC to AIFF

I like the convenience of ALAC for playback on my iPhone, due to its limited storage, and I want to avoid two libraries and I am not interested in compressing down to 128kps with iTunes. For those that can hear the difference between AIFF and ALAC files (I can't) can you still hear the difference when playing the files using Audirvana?

 

Reason I ask is that one explanation put forward for the sound difference is that ALAC files are decoded (uncompressed) on the fly with iTunes causing additional CPU usage and therefore extra electrical interference. I assume this is not the case with Audirvana as the are first loaded into memory (RAM) and then decoded.

 

Like everyone else I want the best sound for the lowest $ and don't want to buy all the extras if I don't have too and ideally I would buy the most basic MAC mini model and simply increase the RAM to 8G and connect it up to my NAS.

#1 - I haven't personally listened on anything other than an SSD, so I can't help you here. You don't happen to have a Firewire HDD backup/Time Machine drive, do you? If you do, you could try playing selections from there vs. the MacPro's SSD(?) and see if there's any sound quality difference.

 

An SSD might be worthwhile for a couple of other reasons: near-instant bootup, and silent running. If you currently have a machine with an HDD, does the hard drive make enough noise to bother you when listening to music? If so, an SSD would be a solution. But on the other hand, if you have a largish music collection, HDDs are much lower priced for equivalent size, as you know.

 

#2 - You'll have integer mode in Snow Leopard as long as you don't buy and upgrade to the new OS X, Lion. If you buy a new Mini, it will have Lion installed. However, it's pretty easy to install Snow Leopard to a partition on the Mini and set up Snow Leopard as the default that the Mini will boot into.

 

#3 - If you haven't already, play the same track in ALAC and AIFF on your system with Audirvana. I believe I can hear a difference, but if you can't, why go to the trouble of converting?

I have a 2010 mini I put Lion on. I decided to make a 20 GB partition and install from the SL install disk on that. It wouldn't allow it. I tried rebooting on the install disk and got repeated kernel panics. I also got a message that I needed a later version of the SL install disk.

This is correct. When I was using Audirvana I was streaming all my music from my NAS via WiFi.

Just to be sure - you do understand that Lion is the new one:)... This is still waiting to be effectively understood. For me, the breaking of integer mode is a big problem, as (to my ears) CoreAudio's rendering of float mode has that "digital edginess" that drives us all towards integer mode. It has been "said" elsewhere that Lion's Float Mode is improved over Snow Leopard's, but if it has, I still don't find it to be a patch on Integer mode. There is much speculation about why Apple dropped Integer Mode. It appears their implementation may have been unstable and has resulted in a number of Kernel Panics indirectly via the USB driver. This is just speculation, not on my part, but on the part of someone I know who understands these things better than I do.

I said installing Snow Leopard to dual boot with Lion was "pretty easy," but wgscott, whose experience with OS X far outstrips mine, urges caution. I'd listen to him. :-)

 

In other words, you may have an easy, flawless install experience, like I did, or you may have problems, as wgscott did. So before you start, be prepared to rescue in at least a couple of different ways:

 

- Make USB stick installs of both Lion and Snow Leopard so you've got something from which you can boot and make a fast clean install of either or both. There are step by step instructions all over the Web at the moment regarding how to do this with Lion, and Snow Leopard works similarly.

 

- Make a Time Machine backup of your current system so you can put things back just as they were.

 

There are third party utilities that will allow you to make backups (e.g., Carbon Copy Cloner), and if you like these, use them instead or also.

 

Those cautions having been raised, I have to say I like being able to run my system in Lion, then quickly reboot (SSD, so reboots are fast) and switch over to Snow Leopard to listen to music in integer mode with Audirvana.

 

It would be even nicer to have integer mode in Lion. Has anyone heard of a USB Audio driver being offered by a third party yet that will allow this?

Did you, or somebody else, tried to install Lion on a partition of Snow Leopard formatted HD, after SL installation?

 

If those situations are not permitted by the System the only way will be to install each system on different HD. But I don't like this solution.

 

Regarding Ajax question about SSHD, I had tried both, from spinning and from SSD HD's. I like better the SQ with SSD, since when you look from Activity Monitor there are some systems task process when playing music. This my explanation, but I'm not sure this is the cause for a better SQ with SSD. Regarding the noise generated from an spinning HD by himself, is not problem for me, since I have it far away from the listening chair.

 

I'll stay on Snow Leopard (on my music server) since I like Integer Mode (on Audirvana), I have friends who still are on Leopard (OSX 10.5) with no problems.

Not to worry. I have both Snow Leopard and Lion installed on the same SSD, no problem.

 

Bill, what type of Snow Leopard install did you try - an original disc that came with a computer; an upgrade disc that looks for a Leopard partition to upgrade (similar to Lion, which can only be installed as an upgrade to Snow Leopard); or from a backup of an existing Snow Leopard installation?

I suspect the reason you had trouble installing Snow Leopard on your 2010 Mini is that you used a Snow Leopard installation disc having an older version of Snow Leopard than the one that came with your 2010 Mini.

 

I bet Snow Leopard would install fine, notwithstanding your Lion partition, if you use the Snow Leopard installation disc supplied with the 2010 Mini. You should be able to identify that disc by a legend stating it is only for use on a Mac Mini and a 2010 copyright date (to ensure it's not from an older Mini).

FWIW, that's the procedure I went through - installed Lion update to Snow Leopard on my MBP; shrank the Lion partition, formatted a new unencrypted HFS+ partition in the free space; then installed Snow Leopard on the new partition using the install disc that came with the MBP.

Bob is right. I misplaced (maybe I gave away) my install disk that came with my 2010 mini, so it is the older install disk that isn't working.

Based on all your advice I intend to bite the bullet and 'do it once and do it right" by purchasing a Mac mini with the following configuration:

 

2.5Ghz i5, 8G RAM, 256G SSD

 

I will store the music on a NAS and stream it via ethernet.

 

Any comments?

 

I am very disappointed that integer mode will not be available with the new mac mini preloaded with Lion OS.

 

This is most probably a dumb question but will the OS (10.6.3) that came on disc with my 2010 MAC pro work on the Mac mini?

I find it increasingly ironic that whenever you finally think you have your head around your music system something comes out of left field (no integer mode in Lion) and blows it out of the water. Very hard to find one size fits all and we/I always seem to be finding work arounds.

Ajax, if you will use the Mini only as a music server you can still buy an 'old' Mac Mini 2010 at Amazon USA:

It will be much more less inexpensive that to pay extra RAM and SSHD to Apple.

 

This is the way I build my Mini 2010.

 

Regarding partition on your HD I'm on my way to do it, but is better to get this knowledge from Bob Stern, Jud or wgscott.
