mkrzych
Hello, I've just purchased JT Aqualung release which appears on the HDTracks in 24/96 PCM resolution flacs. To be honest, pretty stunning transfer as you can see on the graphs and sounds fantastic. Good CREST and interleave dynamics. Almost all 24-bit used and seen in the bit monitor. It was recorded in 1971, but I guess the tapes were in pretty good condition till nowadays. One things is missing the liner notes with lyrics. Enjoy! -- Krzysztof Maj http://mkrzych.wordpress.com/ "Music is the highest form of art. It is also the most noble. mkrzych
Can you explain a bit about these plots? Only the middle one is self-evident to me. You can look at many aspects on the graphs, but I think the most important are: Loudness Full Scale section and True Peak Meter CREST factor. Of course there is also tab with bit monitor, not shown here, but it helps you to see if all the bits are used and don't have any suspicious similar pattern - being potential of upsampling etc. As for the Loudness Full scale the "I" value means integrated loudness peak values - The averaged loudness over the whole track (or LUFS close to the RMS value roughly for the pink noise for calibration), close to the dynamic range (DR) as some kind of the quality factor if there is too much compression used - this case -17dB. Other values are short term and momentary loudness params and are close to that like watching traditional VU Meters. Around or below -10dB which is very good I think. Those are described in EBU R128 and ITU-R BS-1770 standards. CREST factor is more complicated and it's being described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crest_factor The meaning of this value could be perceived as the studio master quality where close to 10 or better is very good I think. Heavy compressed and limited music can reach values below 4 dB. A good native studio master should have a maximum crest larger than 10 dB. There is also CUF (Cut Off Frequency) which determines where the audio peaks can reach, but it is not right every time - depends on the noise level and complication of the waveform etc. At least those are my understanding and I open to discuss it as well. -- Krzysztof Maj http://mkrzych.wordpress.com/ "Music is the highest form of art. One and a half
No sign of Thick as a Brick? Would be keen to compare the "hires" version to the MFSL redbook. The bass on that album really sucked badly like non existent, like Aqualung. AS Profile Equipment List Say NO to MQA Link to comment

cheezmo
This is the same mix as on the 40th Anniversary blu-ray, BUT it is Steven Wilson's mastering. Both Aqualung and Thick as a Brick were remixed by Steven Wilson but then mastered by someone else. Steve wasn't exactly thrilled with the results and now insists that his mixes not be remastered by anyone else. So, these new HD releases are Steven Wilson's original masterings. I believe that Benefit is the same mastering as on the original Steven Wilson remix releases, but I'm not 100% sure. Looking forward to the new Thick as a Brick release. Link to comment

Interesting and you may be right because Benefit doesn't show "remixed by Steven Wilson" next to it and has "2013 stereo remix". Could be another case of misleading the public with "this" release of Benefit Link to comment
wwaldmanfan
I completely missed this thread, but have posted DR charts to the thread "Aqualung at HDTracks" in the Music Downloads & Streaming forum. I haven't listened to the downloads yet, but looking at the numbers, the HDTracks download of Steven Wilson's remix of Aqualung seemingly improves upon the excellent 2011 DVD-A/Blu-Ray release, notwithstanding the fact that the bonus tracks are omitted. However, Benefit looks like some limiting was applied, and, unfortunately, based on the numbers, falls short of the 2013 Anniversary Edition. Link to comment

Yes, limiting is applied and I can hear that over my cans, but not too much as for the rock album and the sound is pretty "airy" and punchy IMHO. -- Krzysztof Maj http://mkrzych.wordpress.com/ "Music is the highest form of art.
