Auraliti - streaming from NAS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have noticed various forum threads that indicate that it should be possible to stream files from a NAS to an auraliti client IF that NAS has the right configuration (i.e. folder structure) and is bonjour enabled. Most current NAS systems have bonjour, so the rest should not be that difficult to adapt.

Has anyone been successful in streaming from NAS, or could Demian from Auraliti share the secret with us?

Thanks

Rudi

I'm currently testing a configuration setting that works on a ReadyNAS. It all seems to work pretty well. Once I'm sure it has no unintended consequences I'll publish the settings. With the latest firmware for the ReadyNAS it was very simple to configure.

(Head in the clouds) I had a ReadyNAS sitting in front of me and decided I would try it.

I'll setup a VortexBox server sometime soon and see what it takes to configure the NAS server function. I can easily describe it at a command line level but I don't know enough about that type of configuration for the Vortexbox. Perhaps you guys could create a script to load the settings for users? Its pretty simple. Let me know if you want the settings.

The principles on the setup would be the same but several of the features claimed on the spec sheets of different NAS's are really "checkbox" features, not meant to be used. NFS support is one of those. Bonjour support is another. Some manufacturers have very locked down configurations which make it impossible to adjust the settings to make it all work.

The current Readynas UI has the necessary stuff readily available and configurable. However, they just announced a UI overhaul that we need to check out to see if its all still available and easy to configure.

NFS, which is native to Linux which all of the NAS's run,is not well supported on the NAS's since its not used in the Windows world. We use it because its native to Linux and very low overhead.

I hope we will get the instructions up on the web site this week. Feel free to adapt them. We can't help beyond explaining the basics.

Has anyone gotten the ReadyNas working with the Auraliti and can publish the settings? I would like to move to NAS to facilitate the ripping and cleaning of metadata and cover art.

I'm surprised you feel that the Auraliti can handle streaming. Doesn't make sense to me. I assumed any NAS connection to Auraliti would be networked hard drive access, not streaming (TCP, UDP, etc).

. My question is has anyone configured the Arualtiti for a NAS? I believe Demian stated the Netgear ReadyNas was the best choice due to config options and that he may post the actual setup.

Just trying to follow up on this.

People seem to use the term "streaming" for anything that has a connection. I'm not trying to be pedantic, as some players can also stream, and using the term for generic computer audio is confusing; this hobby is confusing enough without adding more. :)

Edit: oops, you took it out of your post; now I look like I'm responding to a ghost.

Demian is not quite done with his readynas setup, and I've tried my Synology DS410 and came very close (one saw the other). My PK90USB is not in my system right now (too caught up in DSD playback currently) but if I keep it (posted a couple times that I'd sell) I will try the config again...I think I simply need to rename a couple things in the mpconfig (Auraliti has editable link on the PK90USB local webserver home page).

I was supposed to get a nice illustrated version of this onto the web site last month. Still not ready.

This is best done with a fresh setup. Changing an existing setup with content of the drive could have some less than great consequences.

The process is quite simple and does not involve changes to the player. However you may need to reestablish connections to the NAS from your other devices. If you already have content on the NAS you will either need to move it or you may be able to rename the content folder "export" but that is an experiment I have not tried.

Here are the instruction in basic text form. Read them all first. If you don't fully understand them you should not start or you may need to restart from scratch.

1) Enable Bonjour under Discovery services

2) Then turn on the sharing protocols you need. NFS is required for the auraliti-player. You may need CIFS for Windows or AFP for OSX

3) Then you will need to change the host name. The name used in Bonjour is the same name used as the host. Set it to "auraliti-server"

This will enable the player to automatically find it even if the ip address changes

4) Next we need to share the music using nfs. First create a share named "export". This is the share that the auraliti-player is looking for.

5) Then the share needs to be enabled for nfs. You will also enable it for cifs (for Windows) and/or AFP (for MAC)

6) Then add content to the export share.

7) Restart the auraliti-player for it to find the auraliti-server.

8) You can also add the export share to Squeezeboxserver, DLNA and Firefly to enable sharing of that content to other systems.

You will need to update the mpd database when you add content for it to find the content. mpd will not automatically detect the changes.

Can this work directly off a Mac OS machine? I have tried by:

Enable NFS

Created a share on my desktop name "export"

Changed the hostname to "auraliti-server"

Reboot Auraliti

So far the Auraliti has not been able to see it. I am going to keep trying but wanted to see if anyone has any advice.

Well, not sure what your permissions are, etc but I'd name the host auraliti-server.local (at least in the mount command...see my screen grab that has my PK90USb talking to my Synology NAS)

I'm curious about this... is there any progress on the NAS / Auraliti front? I'm getting very tired of my Squeezebox crashing all the time... Thanks.

Also, while I'm thinking about it, I'm wondering if there is a way to get internet radio on the Auraliti? I know it should technically be possible, but is it a reality to think about the Auraliti this way? As a Squeezebox replacement?

Not sure what progress you are referring to. As I stated in other threads, back in the Spring, I have my Synology NAS (DS410) connected to my Auraliti just fine, and attempted here to troubleshoot another user. NAS and Auraliti is a nice combo.

Is there official support of NAS connectivity to the Auraliti? I also remember that there was talk of an Auraliti-branded NAS ("We are introducing a comparably priced server with this functionality along with services that allow you to easily connect and load files from you PC or Mac.")

I had this working with my synology ds212j but now my pk90 won't connect to the nas. The only change I've made is to upgrade to dsm 4.1 on the nas. Has anyone been able to stream from a synology nas on dsm 4.1 to an auraliti?

Thanks.

I figured it out. I had to go into the NSF privileges in the control panel for the export folder and add the auraliti's IP address. All is good again.
