What a lineup!

Indeed! And I much prefer his small group recordings than the more famous big band ones.

Did you enjoy it?

I heard it live once.

I like his 3rd best with its hints of folk tunes.

I struggle a bit with Prokofiev's Symphonies. Not as much as with Shostakovich's but still... Anyway, I had bought Gergiev's complete set on Decca when it came out because every library should have them.

Today I listened to Op100 and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

Time Out The Dave Brubeck Quartet

SBM gold CD. Have never been one to be keen on test albums, but this one turns out to be quite a good test for PRaT. PRaT is usually thought of as system's ability to convey toe-tapping fun. But there is a higher level of PRaT where the rhythmic flow of the music can turn on a dime. The unusual time signature and relentless shift in rhythm on this album illustrates this higher level PRaT very well.

I always thought of PRaT as an attribute of the music, not of the system.

Pace, rhythm and timing comes from the music. I thought PRaT is the term that describes how well a system passes these musical attributes. Rhythm in music is not always one dimensional boom-boom-boom though. There are strong and weak beats within a bar. And in compound and complex time, it's possible to play games with the subdivision. This type of manipulation is to a large degree what the Time Out album is about. To convey the rhythm shifts in the album clearly, shape of all the notes need to be exact and that in turn requires the system to have very high degree of dynamic integrity/linearity, in realtime.

A while back my system was trashed pretty thoroughly here on CA. Obviously you're not living with sucky systems like the rest of us. So trivialities like PRaT probably aren't something you would bother with :D

I'm interested in a high degree of fidelity to the signal and certain aspects of the system's performance may have an impact in how we perceive tempo, transients an dynamic swings but rhythm may be a bit too extreme.
