Thanks for the recommendation.  My impression hitherto has been that Sibelius's music is cool and  cerebral rather than the romantic and tuneful that I favour; this may simply be down to my ignorance and limited exposure to his music.

The Violin Concerto is the place to start, I think.

Symphonies 1 & 2 are fully in the tuneful Romantic symphony tradition.  It's with No. 3 that he becomes more enigmatic, though I'd never say outwardly cerebral.  I'd skip to 5 and 6 and then come back to 4, 7 and 3.

Wow - my path would be totally different! I found 1 and 7 took me the longest to fall in love with. I think my order was 2, 5, 3, 6, 4. Go figure.

This was just a suggested route for someone wary of his more enigmatic side.  5 was my first love.  The Karajan/EMI recordings and then Bernstein/Sony.  Recently, 6 has become a favorite (Sanderling.  Love the whole Sanderling set.)

Timely collusion of the Bernstein century and titular ascension of H.R.H The Prince Of Wales has been an ongoing source of amusement for me.  Sony's digital remastering a large section of his catalog for these CD's was generally quite good as well.

I always found the pairing of Bernstein with this complete non-entity to be insulting.

The Bernstein Century remasters tended to be a little better.  I love the vibrancy of his Eroica with the NYP.

Occasionally @Musicophile suggest a Haydn album.

But I do wonder why Haydn is disliked by so many astute music lovers.

Where are you encountering many people who dislike Haydn? I'd like to avoid the joint.

There is a local music blog here in SE Wisconsin and one person comments repeatedly about Haydn's ineptitude - otherwise his comments are generally insightful.

First I've heard anything about Haydn's supposed ineptness.

I love Haydn’s Late symphonies, say 88 onwards. I admit I haven’t explored much below that.

I recommend the Dennis Russell Davies complete set for that.   Unfortunately, it seems to be out of print.

My absolute favorite work by Haydn is Die Schöpfung (The Creation). Any nonsense about boring and inept are swept away by the grandeur and beauty of this piece.

Folks on the Good Music Guide forms raved about this recording of The Creation (in English) by Musica Saeculorum:

Tidal messed up the track ordering,

Found it.

Have to say - despite the fact my German is nonexistent - I don't really like this piece in English.

James North, in his Fanfare review of this recording, says the work was written with the German libretto in mind and recommends Boston Baroque on Linn.

Love Ginastera works and specially this one, thanks for the link !

Had problems under Mac / Sierra downloading it with the Chandos-Manager. Then I had to download track by track.

I'm glad I resisted upgrading, then.

Overcoats YOUNG

I heard a track from this on NPR which I loved ("Smaller Than My Mother"). Tidal doesn't have it, so I purchased the whole album on Bandcamp. Anyway it just grows on me with each listening. Very nice sound quality too. It has recently become available for streaming on Qobuz.

Seems to be on Tidal now.  There's even a "Deluxe" version.  The artist page for Overcoats:

A brand new release from Harmonia Mundi:

Streaming from Qobuz.

I listened to the A minor and found that I preferred the earlier Harmonia Mundi recording with Peter Bruns, but Bruns doesn't seem to have recorded the others.

It's so nice finally having access to Chandos' catalogue via streaming.

Now if only Hyperion would follow.

For today:

Streaming from Qobuz.

It's on Spotify and Deezer, but I can't find it on Tidal,  where all the Chandos albums seem to be more than 5 years old.

I should clarify that I don't have the "Hi-Fi" lossless Deezer service, so I don't know if recent Chandos CDs are available for lossless streaming there.

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 - Tatarstan National Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Sladkovsky

Via Tidal.

Very impressed with this orchestra, particularly the silky strings.  The 96/24 downloads for the whole set aren't too expensive, but I wish they were broken down into individually.
