Hi, perhaps someone can help me here:

I'm installing hqplayer embedded onto Ubuntu server on an intel NUC8i3.  I've installed libasound2, wget and dpkg libgmpris and then wget hqplayerd 5.1.1 all work, but get the errors show on the attached picture.  What do I need to install to fix these dependency issues?

"apt install -f" will fix all those. You first install the hqplayerd package and then complete the installation by installing the missing dependencies with "apt install -f".

If there are any dropped dependencies, those can be removed with "apt autoremove --purge".

Thank you!  One more question:  Should I install your low-latency kernel and what is the command to install it?  I'm on the latest Ubuntu server version right now.

It is likely running the generic server kernel? I would certainly recommend either the official Ubuntu low latency HWE kernel, or my custom one. Depending if you need the features of my kernel.

The official Ubuntu kernel is easier from maintenance point of view, you can install it with "apt install linux-lowlatency-hwe-22.04". Then you only need to switch the metapackage when you at some point upgrade the OS to 24.02 (next summer).

Alternatively you can download the linux-image and linux-headers packages from my site and install those with "dpkg -i" just like the hqplayerd one. Give both packages at the same time to "dpkg -i", then it will manage to build any possible DKMS at installation time, such as possible Nvidia driver.

Please note that if you have the latest official HWE kernel installed, it is higher version number than my kernel and thus becomes default and you need to switch it from the GRUB bootloader menu if you want to boot mine instead.

I'm running HQPlayer Embedded on Ubuntu server 22.04 LTS using the HQPe "jammy" image. All is working fine but I'm wondering if I would benefit using HQPlayer OS instead.

If the answer is yes, I'm confused about the instructions from https://www.signalyst.com/embedded-install.html?

Why is "Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish, Debian 12 Bookworm or Fedora 37 Server/Minimal 64-bit OS installed" a prerequisite?

I thought HQPlayer OS is a bootable image and doesn't need any OS installed. What am I missing?

My bad, prerequisite is indeed for "hqplayerd package for your distribution."

Initial question remains though, as HQPlayer Embedded is the only thing running on this machine, would it make more sense to go for HQPlayer OS?

If you already have a system you are happy with, you could just stick with Ubuntu Server + HQPlayer Embedded, possibly with my custom kernel.

It mostly depends on feature sets you want. HQPlayer OS is very stripped down slim OS just for running HQPlayer and nothing else, tuned for single purpose. And some things are easier to do, no need to worry about installing OS and software, and you can mount SMB shares from NAS through HQPlayer web interface. And it is like a device firmware, you just flash updated firmware image when you want to update. It also means that there's no CUDA support and it is not easy to install anything there that is not included by default (there's no package manager).

Thanks for your reply @Miska

I "burned" HQPlayer OS on a USB stick with Balena Etcher but the NUC didn't boot from the USB (yes I changed the boot order in BIOS). I don't know why as I always use the exact same procedure to install Ubuntu on this NUC. Anyway, I will keep Ubuntu for now.

Where can I find your custom kernel?

I tried upgrading to it and it failed (always worked with the previous updates), so likely something that didn't mean to be published. I reverted back to linux-image-6.1.73-jl+.

It is working fine for me... But if it doesn't work for you, just use the 6.1.x series.

Normally after I install the kernel, it will rebuild some nvidia modules near the end of the install. With this kernel, I got a message saying the nvidia driver didn't support it, or something to that effect. I should have saved the error message.

Yes, likely the Nvidia driver is not yet up to date to this latest LTS kernel. They only recently got it updated for 6.5. So if you need Nvidia driver, you'll need to wait for Nvidia to release their next driver update.

Web credentials have not been set up with "sudo hqplayerd -s username password"? Then remember to restart the service with "sudo systemctl restart hqplayerd".

Try hqplayer hqplayer.  It depends on how you set it up during installation.  Several posts back in this thread there are instructions to use “ sudo hqplayerd -s hqplayer hqplayer“

during installation which sets this.  You can also simply do “sudo hqplayerd -s someuser somepassword” to set it to whatever you want.

Also, see @Miska’s post above. 😀

So, everything has been installed properly. One issue: hqplayer does not start when Ubuntu starts. E.g. Hqplayer is not available in the network. Do I miss something? I have applied the respective commands as posted in this thread. Sorry guys, i am a Linux rookie. Thanks.

sudo systemctl enable hqplayerd

This to auto enable at startup

sudo systemctl status hqplayerd

This to check if it’s running

Be sure you know the Ubuntu PC ipaddress to access.

Setting an ipaddress reservation is helpful - you need to do this on your router.
