I would like to use multibootusb to install multiple bootable OS'es on one usb stick. For instance to be able to quickly compare systemd and OpenRC versions of GentooPlayer. Or to add Ubuntu to resize the GentooPlayer data partition. All from one stick.

@antonellocaroli

Do you think this could work with GentooPlayer?

why use multibootusb?that should work anyway....
just use the bootloader of one of the distro that you put on the usb ....

you have various options ....
copy gentoo-systemd on usb ... use the free space to create an ext4 partition where you go to copy the contents of the other stick with gentoo-openrc (including the boot), the same you do for ubuntu ...
then start the usb, go into gentoo

mount / boot

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

you should find all the bootable systems ....

the same you can start from unbuntu as the first distro installed (which should have a graphical tool to update the bootable systems)

thanks Filipe,

So I used balenaEtcher to create a gentoo-systemd stick in the usual way. Then I resized the 3rd partition, keeping enough free space in the 4th partition.

Next I used balenaEtcher to create a gentoo-OpenRC stick. However when I try to copy files (in Ubuntu) from this last stick I get errors that I have no permission to access or copy. What am I doing wrong?

Or should I just mount the gentoo-OpenRC img (or img.xz ?) file and copy from there?

I guess that the initramfs ones are OpenRC and the others systemd?

No, my fault, you miss a piece on the first system you have installed ...os-prober

you have to install it:

echo "sys-boot/grub mount" >> /etc/portage/package.use/system

emerge --ask sys-boot/os-prober

mount /boot

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

you will find something like that:

Great, seems to work. I now get the kernel list below.

However, when I start one of the 'sda4' kernels, it still seems to be based on systemd rather than OpenRC, judging from the commands I can use (such as systemctl).

is not possible, unless on sda4 there is not a systemd system, sure that you copied the right system?

It seems to me that there is some problem on the alsa-project server...

Today I tried both GentooPlay64 versions: the systemd and OpenRC ones. Apart from the init system the installations are the same with alsa 1.0.29, mpd and upmpdcli (for now without ramsystem).

Comparing sound quality, the results are close together, but I do prefer the sound of the systemd version. It is more relaxed, more open (less compressed) and has tighter bass. The difference is subtle but noticeable and important for long listening.

Almost two months after the above comparison, now that ramsystem is working well for me, and inspired by Filippo's post about the latest OpenRC version having an even smaller footprint than the systemd version in terms of running services/processes, I thought I'd revisit the comparison. The result for me is unchanged: I prefer the systemd version and will stick with it for now. Judging my ears only, not a difficult choice.

Thanks Filippo.

When doing that I get these boot options:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/mHH1P4N84a474vWNA

When I choose any of the sda4 ones in the bottom half, I get these error messages:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/N2PdWoZfKaSwFTg66

Actually, when I boot normally with one of the kernels in the top half, I always get a similar error message, only once, after which the booting succeeds as it should and I get the logon prompt:
