...the fact STILL REMAINS AMERICA HAS FREED MORE PEOPLE THAN EVERY OTHER COUNTRY COMBINED ON THIS PLANET.

Kinda helps when you start out with 4 million slaves.

Snowmonkey, you being from Australia, I wouldn't be so quick to condemn America.

Okay, I'm a native American citizen, Priaptor, so I'll be quick to accurately describe American history by saying that the United States has freed more people than every other country simply because it had a copious supply of 4 million slaves to start with.

Are you ADD and incapable of learning??

Do some primary research and see where it began and how it was sold and how it went awry.

What you really mean is read what you believe to be true, and ignore the numerous articles and analyses that offer a contrary view. Your insult says far more about you than it does about me and it is, to say the least, not very flattering.

It is quite amazing that, after all this time, you still don't realize that your attempts to bully anyone who disagrees with you are self-defeating. How ironic that you accuse me of being incapable of learning!

Another excerpt from the far right wing playbook. If the U.S. government had properly regulated Wall Street, the financial crisis of 2008 could have been avoided, along with the devastating effect it had on so many innocent, unsuspecting people.

Allan you are misinformed on this. .

The main instrument that caused the near melt down was the improperly secured mortgage. Granted these guys figured ways to package them that were shall we say "creative" but basically the issue was billions of dollars worth of mortgages were originated (under federal government mandate -official and unofficial ) without the usual and customary procedures and qualifications lenders have been using since financial markets were created. Long story short borrowers who were here before thought to be "discriminated against" were given mortgages even though they did not come close to fitting the profile and template used for those mortgages. In other words billions were loaned to people who were NOT QUALIFIED TO PAY BACK THOSE BILLiONS. The government coerced the lenders and subsidized those very mortgages. The mortgages were re-packaged and sold creating more phony "assets". The Federal Reserve was complicit as were the regulators.

No I meant it EXACTLY as stated that you are incapable of forming an opinion based on facts and furthermore too lazy to actually research the topic because it is easier for you to use left wing rhetoric.

The EPA along with several other federal departments are as much to blame for lack of jobs in America...

You must be right.

It's the EPA's main doing that has suppressed jobs in the United States of America.

So you won't mind, then, if the EPA's regulations are suspended, right?

And when the coal-burning power station is built, then, about a half-mile from your home, the jobs that creates will compensate for the lack of environmental oversight even though the coal-contaminated air might sicken you and your loved ones.

Because what the EPA does is some socialist plot, right?

NEWS FLASH FOR MR. SNOW MONKEY!!! NEWS FLASH FOR MR. SNOW MONKEY !!! (by the way i do like your avatar)

Men have been enslaving other men (and women) since we walked the earth together. Slavery has known nearly no bounds by creed or ethnicity. That is correct Mr. Snow Monkey we humans have nearly universally ENSLAVED EACH OTHER AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER...(we have done it to each other for centuries) The 2 things IMHO i can say about slavery that is true is that 1. it was a sin committed against God and our fellow men, and 2. It was always thought of or couched in terms of economic expedience. (or maybe there were a few tribes that were just plain fkn mean and did it for pleasure - but i have not researched that angle. By the way you are aware that slavery is still flourishing on the planet - right Mr. Snow Monkey?

You may call me Dr Snowmonkey since we're adopting our formal titles. All I was saying is it's easy to brag about how many people you have freed when you start out with millions of slaves.

Not "creative" packaging, but rather misrepresentation amounting to outright fraud! And when the house of cards they built inevitably crumbled, so did the economy.

Apparently you take exception to the drinking part, but swaggering around the hospital with an shotgun is no problem?

So now not only am I ALSO a drunk in addition to all those other things but also "swaggering around a hospital with a shotgun"

My point, man, is that you wanted to undercut Dr. Snowmonkey because he isn't a U.S. citizen, but of course you just want to be nasty to anyone who doesn't agree with you, ain't that right?

So Priaptor, if one does a Google search for that screen name -- so close to Priapus, the minor Greek god of rustic fertility who also had sexual disorders, particularly best known for his large and permanently erect phallus -- is that always you?

I mean is that you on not just Computer Audiophile, but also DPreview, Head-Fi, Audio Shark, Medscape, Miami Heat, Demonocrats, Smithsonian Magazine sites, among others?

Because if they're all you, just the top-level Google search without even clicking through has snippets like:

"Priaptor, why so rude?" [DPreview]

"So Priaptor is an idiot?" [Medscape]

"Unbelievable Reactions People Have Had to the Ebola Outbreak..." [smithsonian Magazine]

I love the Internet...it's so rude...

Point taken Dr. Snow Monkey. It is Dr. from now on. (lest i forget it will be out of old age and not disrespect) I think you are on to something about the dogs though....

Please just call me Snowmonkey (or Chris if you prefer). I'm happy to dispense with the honorifics. Dogs are great. Shame about the flatulence though.

Well explain yourself then: you've said that you are a doctor, and that you "carry" to work everyday, and honestly I don't know what you are carrying? A sixpack or a shotgun? Explain. I just have this image in my mind of someone in scrubs walking around an ER with a shotgun ... or a sixpack ... or both? ... and muttering about "lefties" behind the curtains ... that's the image I'm getting, so explain yourself.

Good that we can agree on. Get down to facts and we can have a dialogue. No doubt the vehicles used to sell those shitty mortgages and insurance vehicles exposed the problem and were the straw that broke the camels back. However those vehicles were nothing more than wrapped up derivatives to trade the crap that was already created by a host of factors and the result rather than the outright cause. Yeah the Wall Streeters mad huge bets but had the mortgages not been so lame as enabled by the government through Fannie and Freddie they wouldn't have existed for Wall Street to sell and short.

Allan you may have an excellent point on the "re-packaging" of these mortgages. We would have to KNOW if the wheeler dealers had in fact (at the time) researched the underlying securities to determine their risk factor. From what i have read and spoken to those actually in the investment firms - they DID NOT DO THEIR DUE DILIGENCE in assessing the risk. You must understand that mortgages have been traded for many many decades. The mortgage itself is assumed to be rather safe and homogeneous in nature with respect to it's overall financial stability. The legwork/research is done at origination. (Far removed from this liquidity packaging) There is enough blame to go around but suffice it to say IF THE GOVERNMENT HAD NOT coerced the lenders into making bad loans (which most likely created an incentive for others to follow suit - wrongly so of course) then this crisis would never have seen the light of day....

I'd hardly call India or China examples of free markets. It fascinates me that environmental protection has come to be regarded as a left wing cause when it is countries like the US and Japan which have the best record in that regard. It is the old Soviet block countries of Eastern Europe where massive environmental degradation has occurred.
