Boris75
I second Hugh Mesakela's track, but I also add the entire "Hope" album. It is just great music and well recorded for a live session. The SACD version has outstanding sonics. Link to comment

realhifi
Yes indeed. And it is slated to be reissued in SACD by Acoustic Sounds - I already preordered it. The effect you hear is QSound. Madonna's Immaculate Collection - Vogue in particular - is quite spectacular in this regard. Hendrix used it on his Electric Ladyland album also. Check out "and the gods made love" that kicks the album off in particular. It sounds like it's all around you then goes directly inside your head. Crazy effect. David Link to comment
Richmalk
The best classical orchestral recording I have ever heard is Mahler's 1st, by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Bernard Haitink, from 2009: Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D Major | HDtracks - The World's Greatest-Sounding Music Downloads The detail, space, clarity and dynamic range are stunning, as well as the performance. Best of my thousands of recordings, and closest to being there. Richard Link to comment

Jud
Bob Dylan - Everything is Broken (track of Oh Mercy) For a couple of decades now, "Man in the Long Black Coat" from Oh Mercy has been a track I've used to demo systems. As the track opens, the sound of chirping crickets gradually becomes rhythmic and turns into the rhythm of the beginning of the song (the lyrics of which begin, "Crickets are chirping...."). How smoothly that happens (does the chirping "foretell" the rhythm of the song's intro - good - or does the rhythm of the music come out of a more or less random bunch of chirping crickets - bad) says something about the ability of a system to do microdynamics well. Hi Jud, I have refound Dylan and now have 20 of his albums - can't get over his effortless command of the English language, his story telling ability and the way he puts it all together with wonderful music. His greatest attribute IMO is his ability to re invent himself and to continue to be relevant. His songs are timelessness. A true original talent. I love our hobby. Isaacc7
I tend to use recordings that stress what I consider important aspects of playback accuracy. I am most concerned with accurate timbre, a well defined recreation of space, and recreation of live dynamics. So for demo recordings, I tend to gravitate towards minimally miked, acoustic performances. Just about anything from MA Recordings or Nimbus would do just fine. Recently I've been using: 1) Calamus, The Splendor of Al-annulus from MA Recordings 2) Surround Yourself With Hindustani Ragas by Nimbus. A great DVD-A release that may tempt me to get a surround system at some point. 3) La Segunda by Sera Una Noche on MARecordings. For popular music I like The Trinity Sessions by the Cowboy Junkies, White Stripes by White Stripes (play it loud, the space and sound of the guitar is amazing), Folk Singer by Muddy Waters, and The Best of Bill Haley and the Comets. That count into Rock Around the Clock gets me every time... Link to comment

Ajax
Donald Fagen, "The Nightfly". Plenty of good 'demo' material on this album. (The music is agreeable, too.) +1 For those who don't know, Donald was a founding member of Steely Dan. I mention this because my 15 year old son recently downloaded "I.G.Y" from iTunes at 256kps. I asked him why he did this as I already had a lossless CD quality ripped on my hard drive. He told me I couldn't have as it was a new song just released. I explained I had purchased it originally as an LP early 80's and again as a CD mid 90's and that is was not in fact a new song. (He was born 1999). The point is this album is that good that it is timeless and appeals to all ages.
