What type of speakers (tower, monitor, powered) do you use in your primary system?

Bowers & Wilkins 802 Diamonds (second generation) in Piano Black. Love them.

 

On a side note, soon (I will be building the bookshelf 1L Natalie P's that WKHanna has, but with lots of updates to them (talking possibly Beryllium tweeters and the works on these speakers). I think if we go all out (Bill will possibly replace parts in his to bring them up to the same level) they will be on the order of 802Dis in terms of quality, just won't have the low end and possibly some of the mid range clarity that the tear drop marlin head seems to give. But anything is possible! All that for roughly under $2k, what's not to like!? I think I'm going to skip on the custom cabinets and just use the Parts Express Curved cabinets to make it easy (as that's what the Nat. P's were designed for).

What are Natalie P speakers?

They are the speakers that WKHanna built (his 'Twins') back on post 49. Designed by Jon Marsh over at htguide.com/forum in the DYI Speaker building section. Jon is a big StarWars fan and is a huge fan of Natalie Portman...hence the designation of "Natalie P's".

 

They are some of the most impressive speakers I've ever heard for the price and for anyone that knows speaker building and crossover design... the speakers shouldn't sound all that good but he somehow stubled across a crossover/driver design that sort of defies how a lot of crossovers work at the level (quality) of sound you get from the parts).

 

Just to give an idea.... I'd say they are roughly about $1K to build and perform equivalent to the Bowers and Wilkins 700 (well now the cheaper CM series) to low end 800 series Bowers and Wilkins. So about a $5k to $8K retail price range. And that's with the normal parts, not the upgraded parts Jon Marsh is personally working to design for WKHanna's upgrade and my full 2nd system build. Though mine will be a bookshelf version (original design, not the floor standers that WKHanna built) put into these cabinets:

I used for fifteen years or so the Finnish speakers, HIFIC1, designed by Pekka Tuomela and DIY my self. It's on my avatar. I sold them in last December, the new project will be some variation of Sigfried Linkwitz's Magic521.

Jon and I , we are fans of Arvo Pärt .

My previous idea was Jon's project Arvo Pärt Picante ( http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=39342 ), but I want a narrower front baffle. I have listened even no-baffle at mid- high range, it's so natural if the speakers are good quality ones. My choice is Seas Excel W18EX-001 with ribbon tweeter and 3x10" bass. Linkwitz measured the distortions of the W18EX and findings are - exellent. THD was at level 96dB only 0,25% approx - like some Sennheiser's headphones !

Wow, I sold my AR9's in 1984 to purchase a pair of Acoustat 1+1s. Those old ARs were my first pair of decent speakers after I sold a pair of JBL L65s.

Not very widely known fact - Arvo Pärt was a sound engineer for years in Estonian National Radio and I think - that is reason why his Music sounds very good also in recordings, not only in live concerts.

Hi all I have in my main system Zu Soul Superflys (towers) - with new nanotech drivers - I have only just installed the drivers.

2nd system used occasionally is Audioengine B5 actives bookshelf's on speaker stands.

I listen to a pair of Audax full range drivers in a sealed box, though I lose some highs and the lower octaves they image exceptionally well and we cant fit anything larger in our house. When we get round to moving a pair of quarter wave pipes using a 6 inch or there about Fostex full range will be built. Being a crossover-less speaker does give the amp an easy time driving the speaker I guess, they suit my taste anyway, if I did go multi way I would go active but with crossovers at 50-100hz and 10-15 khz.
