George- outstanding job with this review.  Your description of the sonic attributes of the Pontus is exactly what I hear from my Denafrips DAC's (Venus 2 and Terminator Plus) and why I have become such a fan of the brand.  It is the sound I have been searching for with my system for so many years.  

 

I had been enjoying my Yggy A2 (using AES input from a Berkeley Alpha USB) but after reading many reviews, one year ago I decided to give the "regular" Terminator a try (latest version with latest board).  Head to head in my system, as much as I enjoyed the Yggy A2, it was no contest for me.  The Terminator was a very clear step up to my ears.  This is not a knock against the Yggy.  We all have our sonic preferences and there are some who may prefer that DAC.  I do think the fact that George is using his own personal recordings gives his review extra weight and credibility.

 

Also, I want to give a shout out to Alvin at Vinshine.  His customer support is as good as it gets.  If you ever need support, he is there for you.

Yes, I read that review as well, and I am sitting here listening to my Venus 2 and thinking....  wow, we must have radically different ears/brain/system, or something else.   All good though, there is no one DAC that will satisfy everyone.  But, that is not at all how the Denafrips DAC's I have owned sound like.  If they did, I would have quickly sold my first Denafrips DAC and never considered them again.  I love speed, fast transients, etc.

Venus 2 arrived two weeks ago and it is residing in my new "work from home" home office, which includes a super nice audio rack ($35 from Amazon).  I haven't had a chance to compare yet.

The Pontus has user changeable filter options, but the filters are only applied when OS Mode is being used.
