HDMI to SPDIF? Can you recommend an audio extractor?

Recommended Posts

I have an Oppo BDP-93 which I sometimes use as a transport to play CDs via its coaxial SPDIF out to my DAC (dCS Rossini).

I would also like to play SACD and BluRay discs to my DAC. However, the signal for these comes out of the HDMI output only (some copy protection business I think). There are these devices out there, "HDMI audio extractors", that take an HDMI signal and split the audio out to digital or analog outputs.

So I am looking for one such HDMI audio extractor that:

1- Has a coax SPDIF output

2- Can do higher than redbook quality output

3- Does not have HDCP issues (copy protection issues)

4- Can be set to select the 2ch version in the HDMI signal

5- Sounds good

Any advice please?

Thx.

Look into this:  Essence Evolve II-4K HDMI DAC.  Its S/PDIF optical output handles up to 24/192.  www.essenceelectrostatic.com

Thx. That's a bit overkill for me as I don't want the DAC part, plus I would prefer coax over toslink out.

I have ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FM3HWNW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and will report back on whether it works or not. The Oppo BDP-93 plays pretty much anything, including DVD-A (I have a few), SACD (I have many), BluRay Audio (I have a few), so we shall see. I am not inclined to spend a lot of money on this since it is rare that I listen to physical media anymore.

I expect this to be the same as the KanexPro audio extractor: https://www.kanexpro.com/item/?id=HAECOAX

OK.  I could not find any useful PCM audio specs but, in this case, the less it does, the better.  Good luck.

From the Kanex website (the unit looks identical and I'm sure it comes from the same OEM):

Toslink(SPDIF)Out:

  • Supports LPCM 2.0CH@ 24bit/20bit/16bit, 192kHz/176kHz/96kHz/88kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHz
  • AC3 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHz/32kHz
  • DTS 5.1ch, 48kHz/44.1kHz
  • One bit audio 5.1ch, 44.1kHz

Since dCS Rossini DAC does support DoP via both coaxial inputs, AFAIK this is the only external audio extractor that could support SACD without resorting to PCM conversion

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=590187330024

And then there's an expensive mod for Oppo BDP-93 but that's superseded by Vanity203HD already, only compatible with UDP-203

Wow! That's fabulous. And the price is perfect. If only I could figure out a way to buy it! :)

They should have an official site but their HDMI 2 DSD wasn't listed yet, maybe their contact form is worth a try?

I also their e-mail addresses and hopefully they're still valid

If that were no go, you might have to pay more for an agent since they'll charge some fees

Are these agents reputable? I don't mind a fee.

I don't need such services myself since I'm living in Hong Kong.

Maybe take a look at this page below and decide for yourself

As long as you're sending your payment via PayPal, it should be fairly safe even if something were going wrong.

Thank you. It turns out a friend is going to be in China and has ordered it and will bring it when he returns to the US. Interesting device.

I started a discussion about this back in 2010, and I'm not sure much has changed.  Atlona used to sell a real nice one.

https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=82217.0

Monoprice as a $42 one.

If I can find my Atlona I'll PM you and send it to you.

I tried one from Tripp Lite, which looks to be the same as one from KanexPro (which supposedly supports PCM to 192):

https://www.tripplite.com/uhd-4k-2k-hdmi-audio-de-embedder-extractor~P130000AUDIO

I could only get it to output 44/48. SACD would output at 44 and a DVD-Audio (which was originally 96) would output at 48. So I returned it.

A friend of mine is working in Beijing for a month and he has ordered the one recommended by @seeteeyou. I am willing to take the risk on these $460 just for the adventure - obviously it would be impossible to return it. If it works as advertized I would get a pretty good way to play any disc in it's native format (CD, SACD, DVD-Audio, BluRay Audio).

I'll report back when I get this thing and try it out.

BTW... WTF is wrong with people... BluRay audio is a pain in the but. I don't get it at all. I have been able to rip DVD-Audio (with a fair amount of effort) and not even trying to do the same with a few BD-Audio discs I have (eg INXS's new release of Kick).

Both are quite doable.

I’ve used DVD Audio Extractor (on mac) to do a DVD-Audio disc. What would you recommend for BD-Audio?

There’s.a tutorial about how to do this from Chris on the site.

Main listening (small home office):

Main setup: Surge protectors +>Isol-8 Mini sub Axis Power Strip/Protection>QuietPC Low Noise Server>Roon (Audiolense DRC)>Stack Audio Link II>Kii Control>Kii Three BXT (on their own electric circuit) >GIK Room Treatments.

Secondary Path: Server with Audiolense RC>RPi4 or analog>Cayin iDAC6 MKII (tube mode) (XLR)>Kii Three BXT

Bedroom: SBTouch to Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Setup.
Living Room/Kitchen: Ropieee (RPi3b+ with touchscreen) + Schiit Modi3E to a pair of Morel Hogtalare.

All absolute statements about audio are false :)
