New Book | Audio Research: Making the Music Glow

Audio Research announced a new book this morning, celebrating its 50th anniversary. I must say the book looks fabulous and makes me want to drive over to ARC HQ, 15 minutes from my house, to have a listen to some stellar components. (Note: Audio Research uses Wilson Audio Alexia Series 2 speakers in its listening room, the same speakers I've had for about a year.) Anyway, fans of ARC and HiFi in general should have a look at this book. It's extremely comprehensive and contains never before seen images. I pre-ordered mine this AM :~)

Many of us have virtual and intangible everything now days. It's nice to see a physical product that we can hold in our hands and page through while listening to music.

Here are the official press release and images.

MAPLE GROVE, MN – August 20, 2020 – Audio Research is honored to partner with author Ken Kessler in releasing a book timed to the company’s 50th anniversary. Entitled, “Audio Research: Making the Music Glow”, the book describes the people behind the company, designing, manufacturing, fine-tuning, and marketing the audio amplification and source components that have been regarded perpetually as among the best in the industry.

Celebrating its first half-century, the book tells the story of a manufacturer that helped define high-end audio, with the sole purpose of elevating the sound quality of music in the home. William Zane “Bill” Johnson established Audio Research in 1970, basing its products on what was then considered by many to be obsolete technology: vacuum tubes. Guided by his passion for music and quality listening with a refusal to fall victim to fashion and design trends of the times, Johnson was revolutionary in sound reproduction.

“This isn’t just any book,” said Audio Research CEO Jeff Poggi, “The ‘reference’ quality history of Audio Research, authentic and honest in its storytelling is ‘hi-definition’ in content, art, and execution. It needed to bring Bill Johnson’s passion, creativity, and dedication to life, showcasing how Bill’s legacy lives on in the people and products that ARC continues to live and breathe today. Now more than ever, this book feels so right – it endures, it is timeless, it is the perfect reflection of an Audio Research product in that it will last a lifetime.”

With open access to the company’s archives, the participation of employees, and the support and insights of Bill’s wife, Nancy, “Audio Research: Making the Music Glow” is filled with rare images, curated reprints of period interviews, the definitive product listing, and a study of what the experts have determined to be the company’s 25 greatest achievements, augmented by fresh photography of each model. Within the pages are the stories of the company’s roots, its development, its evolution, and its tenacious hold on delivering industry standard in music playback.

Making the Music Glow Anniversary book is priced at $150.00 MSRP and will be available through authorized Audio Research dealers and online at https://audioresearch.com/audio-research-making-the-music-glow/

It is interesting that ARC has kept one of every piece of kit they ever made. It is quite an amazing feat and probably takes a mass amount of room to boot.

    Agree.

You should see the company's stock of parts for nearly every component it has ever sold. There is over $1,000,000 worth of parts sitting in the factory just incase an old unit breaks. ARC takes good care of its customers.

I haven't seen it but I talked to the ARC reps about it. Very cool indeed.

I asked some advice on my ARC SP-16, I wasn't the original owner but that didn't matter to them. They still gave me the information.

What an odd experience trying to preorder the book. It takes all of your contact information and when it has it ends with a message that says “You did a very good job filling out the forms”. Didn’t ask for a credit card, didn’t give an estimated ETA, no reference number, nothing. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Agree.

The company ARC uses for this is also outsmarting itself. The individual “pop up” questions such as address, then zip code, etc... are so annoying. Using tech just for tech’s sake is dumb.

A simple form and possibly some text that says what’s going on would’ve been wonderful.

I have owned a number of ARC products over the years and enjoyed every one.

The company has dabbled with transistors since the 1970s . Interesting what ARC says about the place of tubes in modern playback accuracy Why ARC uses tubes

Having images cross from one page to another is not a layout I fancy for quality images.

Just got my invoice for this so apparently it’s about to ship. But, $30 for shipping? That seems a little excessive.

I hear ya.  Back in 2000 I had bought, Eric Clapton The Autobiography, hardcover book.  After reading it, I sent it to my sister across the U.S.  The post office charged me $19 for shipping.  I had already put a letter, a check and time spent wrapping the book together, so I reluctantly paid the price.  Never again.  She could have bought the book for that price back then.

BTW it's a great read.  If you like Clapton you'll also want to read Pattie Boyd's book, Wonderful Today.  It's her life story with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, The Stones,  etc..  I think no other woman alive has had as many songs written about her.  It's truly amazing.
