Do we really need DSD128 in a DAC? Isn't 64 enough?

Recommended Posts

Isn't DSD64 enough? I mean I have just found out (der) that the entire Native DSD catalog that has ever been recorded on SACD (and therefore if it's ever released for download in it's native format) was recorded using DSD64.

Ted. I've just seen your fantastic google doc DSD resource. Lots of DAC's don't have DSD128.

Why would this matter if there is zero music available recorded in this format?

Cheers

It depends on how you prefer to do things. I don't need DSD128 material to utilize DSD128... :)

IMO, it is useful for example:

  • Upsampling from PCM or DSD
  • Digital volume control for DSD64 (including channel balance adjustments for multichannel)
  • Digital room correction for DSD64
  • Playing back your own recordings
  • Future proofing for upcoming DSD128 material

Sure. No problem with any of the logic there. But seriously.."Upcoming DSD128 material"...you're kidding me right? Like *what* material? In any case what miniscule amount comes out, you could use something like audiogate to produce a 64 file that could play on a DSD64 DAC right?

DSD128 is becoming available on a number of DACs. It is the prime sample rate of the Korg recorders. And it represents a nice compromise over DSD256. :) (said half kidding). DSD128 pushes the noise shaping into the stratosphere. It is of "reasonable" file size (given that 24/192 wav is only slightly smaller) and as Miska points out, is a nice oversample to make room for things like DSP (room, volume control, etc)

Oh Ok. Thanks Ted...kinda like a 32bit DAC playing 24bit tracks has some extra room for digital volume control..that sort of thing.. is that what you mean? So you'd recommend narrowing a search to 128DSD DAC's if at all possible?..
