i would like to build something near the high end of the spectrum while keeping it reasonable

check out the DIY fora or facebook groups regarding "Open Baffle", this seems to me the closest you may get to high end within your budget. AFAIK, not too close ... but that always depends on the personal definition of "high end".

You may want to have a look at Bob Crites' site.  He started out providing parts and then drivers for Klipschorn speakers and now has kits and drivers that you can build yourself.  I restored a pair of Klipschorn's dating back to 1976 and got all my parts from him.
