How to disable journaling on a mac HD

I see that amarra suggests to disable journaling on the HD. Even the apple site suggests the same in scenarios when performance is critical. The problem is I do not see a way of disabling journaling on my HD without re-patrtioning the HD and erasing all the data in the process.

 

Does anybody know of a way disabling journaling without having to start from re-partioning the HD.

I don't think this is possible. In fact I don't think the OS can be installed on a non-journaled HDD.

I've recently done this. The free utility onyx has a box to tick if you wish to disable journaling. Its under system info -disk.

Jon, Thanks. I tried onyx and it works. I disabled the journaling on my internal 1 TB drive (dual HD) on which my OS and music resided. I think it might be making a difference to the sound too.

I plan on doing that too. Any way to disable to external hard drive should I use HTFS ?

using disk utility, select the desired partition and while pressing the option key click on FILE at the top and you should see a disable journaling option

Probably the "last" thing to do once everything is setup and installed and ready for playback.

 

Then I'd re-enable it when doing any major changes in programs or configuration.

For an external drive,

 

 

sudo diskutil disableJournal /Volumes/Music

 

 

Substitute whatever your external drive is.

 

For the root drive,

 

 

sudo diskutil disableJournal /

 

 

I wouldn't do it for the root drive. (I wouldn't do it for the external drive, but I guess if it leads to an improvement you can hear, then go for it).
