Chris,

I think someone else tried to point out the same as I am going to show you now. Look :

First shot is from a certain width of my Chrome browser; Second shot is from the same browser but the right hand border was dragged a few mm to THE RIGHT. Thus, the internal browser's width scaling messes up.

Hope this is helpful.CAPreview07a.thumb.png.91cd95d6ae452b33dbbc30c5c436b858.pngCAPreview07b.png.a31310b3744fbc6e03714f4e20ea7605.png

Maybe you need to close your browser or something. My view is much larger than yours. I said my "view" Peter.

I am sorry, but what do you mean with "my view" (in bold) ? (English again :$).

Anyway, I stopped and restarted the browser and see no difference. Here's the maximum width I can drag regarding monitor (width of 1650). After some threshold only white adds.

Btw have no real issues with most of the things I mention so I am only trying to help a little.

Your help is appreciated.

See these two screenshots. Yours has my words on two lines, whereas mine shows my words on a single line. It's like your browser isn't seeing the 20% width adjustment I made last night.

Or a thread to offer users various customizations for the site pages they can apply themselves with CSS (cascading style sheets), as mansr was talking about.

This would be fabulous.

A second theme = twice as much work to maintain. I'm not opposed to it, but custom CSS could solve the issue.

OK, Now I am going to act smarter than I am :

What I see happening is not any dedicated Phone or Tablet or Desktop CSS etc. What I do see though is that all is just related to the width of the "monitor". Here's the phone view, but just from the desktop's screen :CAPreview09.png.a208d70336cc2d8cfc139c23d8bb1a19.png

What if this is about thresholds and when a certain width (for upper boundaries) is not supported in the CSS etc. it falls back to the smaller (default witdh). Think Case - Else.

I just set my monitor to its native 5120x2880, and resized the screen from smallest to largest and everything in between, and don't see the issue.

The new site goes by viewport size - http://viewportsizes.com/mine/

This does not work on an iPad/iPhone which means it's no longer possible to participate in a really active thread such as this one on a mobile device without spending a lot of time trying to figure out where I left off. Also, on my iPad Air2 the page is larger than the screen which means that when I scroll, the page moves left and right in the window as well as up and down depending on how straight I scroll.

Please pinch the entire screen and it will resize to your iPad so you don't have to see the right-left issue.

For some reason the "white space" issue on my screen seems even more severe than most (particularly as I'm not seeing the ads):

58d00b3febd0e_Screenshot(2).thumb.png.e2e4fc1799473ccb23b5e0069a510c15.png

This is on a 27 inch monitor with 2560x1440 resolution (I figured if I was going to get an expensive CUDA card for HQPlayer, I might as well also get the graphical benefits with the audio ones. :)

Surely it would be ridiculous to widen the screen so much that an entire paragraph can be seen on a single line. Yes that's all the way on the continuum from wide to skinny. Also ridiculous is a thin design that is so thin as to have one word per line.

We must find a happy medium. Can you find a site that works perfectly for you and post a link?

Chris: It's being caused by ad positioning, for paid members who don't see ads.  When the viewport is wide enough that ads can be positioned on the right, even the paid members' text shortens.

Is there a way to have the ads "shown" for paid members at the bottom to allow maximum text width?

Hi Jud - I originally had this exact design. But, as I posted to jhwalker, there is a screen reflow annoyance that happens.

How about this, I'll re-enable this aspect and you guys can help me with feedback?

The reflow is pretty much unnoticeable here for me, as (1) I'm on a fast connection, and (2) It happens at the same time as I'm being taken to my previous position in a thread, so I perceive both as part of the same thing.  No annoyance so far.  I'll retest at home.

Ok, good.

There's one more smaller issue. The top two articles on the home page have the number of comments cut off unless a page resize is manually done by the user. Not the end of the world though.

What do you think of the size without the sidebar to the right? Is this what you had in mind?

Is that side bar supposed to be gone now ? I still see it.

We must be talking about different things.

Home page and articles ? ... how are they related ? OK, I am thick.

I removed what's called the sidebar for user who've purchase a CA All Access Pass

screen reflow effects all pages, including home page.

Chris, here's another question - may be an issue if it's not user error. So when a topic is all caught up, there is no button to go to the first unread article. So, for example here, the * is grey. not green:

Capture.thumb.PNG.981977da04470aae4d1f7a328d4a715f.PNG

In the previous site, just clicking on the topic used to take you to the first unread. In the new site, there is this option when you create an activity stream:

Capture.PNG.d07647ae5bcbbf678aa3fcc4b7dc0744.PNG

But what is needed is an option (should really be a site-wide default, IMO) that when clicking on a topic, it takes you to the last post, not the first. Oh - and also - this is necessary for mobile and tablet, since they don't seem to see the unread button/star, if I remember correctly.

Your thoughts?

Try the new test activity stream. Does this work how you want?

No. The failing case, is a thread - sorry, topic - on which I'm all caught up. In that case, there's nothing unread, so there is no icon or setting to say "take me to the last post". In your test stream, I filtered further to content I follow, and clicked on the title of a topic that had no unread content. It took me to the first post, not the last.

Click on the time such as "2 minutes ago" and it should take you there. Correct?

Well, it all looks much better now than it did 2 days ago. :) Yet, I would prefer even more horizontal and vertical space for content/posts. This can be easily achieved with a slightly smaller font and/or a smaller line spacing. Also, some chunky black menu bars can be much smaller and this ugly top menu bar shouldn't be continuously visible, wasting vertical space. And please get rid of the black & white theme. Nothing wrong with blue or even purple shades, anything but black and white.. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the feedback. At least now someone argued for a smaller font, rather than the others arguing for a larger font :~)

Two quick questions:

  • How does one insert a video?
  • Is there a way to turn off WYSIWYG and edit the BBCode directly?

Thanks!

The only way for me to show  the source for people to edit the code directly is to enable posting of HTML. No forum on Earth allows that any more. Bummer.

Nice!

Appreciate the change :) and the other changes today - esp. the dynamic resizing of content for those of us on the ad-free model.  Very nice to have the screen filled, and still works very well on iPhone / iPad, as well.

Really coming along, Chris.

Thanks for the gentle nudges to adjust things a bit.
