Being able to rip an SACD is very important, the Oppo 10n can do this simply with a USB stick and small files. Since the 203 is 4k capable, it has a different Mediatek chip, OP8951 as opposed to the 10n of Mx8580. Unless a 203 is tested, it may not rip an SACD, and there will be a scramble for the 10n players. Already the cheaper Pioneer's supply is drying up quickly of SACD suitable rippers.

All that fluff is irrelevant, sorry to say. It needs to have the Mediatek chipset for ripping SACD above and beyond anything else.

Why is ripping SACDs relevant to a comment that the Oppo 203 4K UHD player is being launched and speculation on its streaming capabilities?

...in my opinion / experience...

While I agree "Everything may matter" working out what actually affects the sound is a trickier thing.

And I agree "Trust your ears" but equally don't allow them to fool you - trust them with a bit of skepticism.

Because the 'old' models have this capability, it's an expectation worth looking out for. Ripping SACD with a universal player is best thing since sliced bread, finally an easy way to transfer files onto portable players, or create playlists from SACD you own. Not all SACD have the hybrid layer either.

For the 203, a wait is required to determine if the player can rip like it's predecessors. If it cannot, by then, the 10n players are probably all gone.

I just want gapless streaming. I'll settle for that...

If it is a requirement you have then you probably already have the player yoi need and so can decide once the 203 comes out whether to upgrade?

Since the Mediatek chipset in the 203 is very highly probable to be different from the one in the 10x, there is little likelihood that the 203 will be useable for ripping. That may happen later, if the hackers are willing and able adapt their code to the new chipset. But, it is not at all assured. Oppo or Mediatek might even engineer a stop to the hacking loophole for the 203.

I would just just not count on ripping with a 203.
