fajita
I installed 2.10 beta mainly because of the RoonBridge shell replacement. I had been running RoonBridge on a WinSrvr 2012 R2 machine with AO 2.0, booting to a command prompt. I honestly wasn't expecting any change, but was pretty shocked that things sounded better - more air and separation on some test plays of vocal jazz tracks. Don't know if it's the shell replacement or other tweaks in the beta, but good stuff so far... Link to comment
AudioPhil
Hi Fajita Using the shell replacement feature has not only reasons of convenience. In fact it does strip away another bunch of running processes. This is very good for SQ if you use the shell replacement in GUI mode, and still another small advantage if you do so in Core or Minimal-Server mode. Lionelh2
Sorry for having to ask this, but I can't figure out how to get Process Lasso, HQPlayer, and RoonServer to run in a shell replacement scenario in Win10. Can someone suggest how I can accomplish this? dtb300
You can have only one program as the Shell Replacement: Have RoonServer autostart (system tray, right click, run on startup) Process Lasso will autostart (part of installation if have proper rights) Have HQP as your shell DTB Rig: https://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/9648.html Link to comment
Lionelh2
Thanks, I will give it a try. I did try to set HQP as shell, but RoonServer did not seem to load when set to auto load. Always possible I I made a mistake in setting up. AudioPhil
Hi as dtb300 mentioned windows knows only one shell (at a time). The trick he mentioned with Roon will only work in GUI mode, but not in core mode. Core mode cannot handle autostart folder like startup. in core the only wqy to start up multiple components is to make a custom batch file which fires up all components in the right order. Then manually set this custom batch file as shell. dtb300
as dtb300 mentioned windows knows only one shell (at a time). The trick he mentioned with Roon will only work in GUI mode, but not in core mode. Core mode cannot handle autostart folder like startup. I used to run RoonServer on my 2012R2, but have since changed to RoonBridge. But.... I just checked this again on my 2012R2 Essentials, and RoonServer will autostart when setting the App to "Run on Startup" (in system tray) when in GUI mode. Once set, I then changed back to CORE mode and my iPad connected to it. Also checked Taskmgr and RoonServer, RoonAppliance were running in CORE mode before any AO. BUT BUT BUT - Getting Roon to work/play music in Core is a different topic. So back to Minimal and all is well. in core the only way to start up multiple components is to make a custom batch file which fires up all components in the right order. Then manually set this custom batch file as shell. Yep the batch file is a great way to startup multiple items. I use a batch file on my 2012R2-Essen using RUN in Registry. This starts up my USB Driver Control Panel, and I also used it for HQP when I was running it. DTB Rig: https://cgi.audioasylum.com/systems/9648.html Link to comment

What I did was change to Fidelizer Pro as shell and then open task manager to start up RoonServer. Fidelizer starts up HQPlayer as media player and I'm there. I am stunned at the SQ improvement. Highly recommended to those who haven't tried shell replacement.
