Watkin had plenty of technical prowess until he began to suffer the effects of an autoimmune disorder. The Bach was IIRC his last commercial recording. I imagine when I listen to it that I can hear him working against his disease to give this last one his all. Whether that’s actually so or not, it is just beautiful playing, full of emotion.
