Gerard-K Posted March 25, 2021 Share Posted March 25, 2021 Just a quick update on my Boss2: The Old works now, including the remote that was ordered with the Boss2 unit. Only thing that still hangs the RPI unit is when I attach the Wifi dongle to it. Obvious panic-kernel errors are seen in the screen dump of the RPI. Can it be that it needs dual power attached because the dongle draws too much current? As to the sound quality of the system: I was already so much impressed that I bought new speakers to go with the system, but one of the LS50's was scratched so I had to return them. I now have them replaced with the LS50Meta speakers and this is yet another step up in sound quality and also in stereo-imaging. Never before have I ever had such a clear and precise image of the sound stage. It really is like the speakers themselves don't exist and the sound is imaged everywhere from the left side to the right side of the room, some instruments or vocals higher up on stage, others a bit lower. Very impressive for a system with an amp that is almost 20 years old. The main thing here is the quality of the DAC & PSU and the speakers. I'm now also listening with Tidal high-res and that sounds even better than Spotify and Apple Music. I just need to figure out how Tidal-connect works so I don't have to use the computer... albang Posted March 25, 2021 Author Share Posted March 25, 2021 If you are on iOS (and using Moode audio on the rpi), I recommend mconnect. I am using it with Qobuz, it works very well. You get the full quality of Qobuz without having to go over AirPlay. Link to comment

I've tried all methods of getting the system setup: via ethernet cable but also via wifi host/hotspot setup. the dongle was recognized with the wifi hotspot/host setup, worked for a bit, but still crashes the RPI after some time when I installed the OLED according to the procedures as outlined in this thread. Can it be that the Comfast WIFI is conflicting with the Boss2 h/w as I see errors mentioning interrupt request failures and then kernal panic and shutting down the CPU's. The RPI never comes up after that so need POPO to restart (and remove the dongle) to get a working system. Link to comment

Boss 2 player will work with single power also For single power J18 jumper on Boss 2 board must be closed . What is the purpose of the USB port on the Nirvana? Is it better to use separate power supply for the RPi? If yes, which one? Link to comment

I have not been able to get the Boss2 to work on the official Volumio image yet (though it is working, including the OLED, following all the steps in this thread using the Volumio image provided by Allo). As per volumio docs saying, the driver and dtoverlay required in volumio using kernel (currently volumio using 4.19.118) , boss2 drivers available on 5.4.77 rpi kernel onwards. Allo will take steps to include boss2 in newer kernel versions of volumio. Link to comment

Are you aware that Volumio currently have a beta underway for Volumio 3, and that while it includes the right kernel drivers, it does not incorporate the Boss2 parameters (dacs.json, etc)? Again, though, it's a temporary fix until Volumio gets it working officially: every time Volumio updates their software, I have to do this entire install process (for both the mods and the OLED), and reinstall and reconfigure all my plugins. But the OLED screen does not work, despite following the steps in the above instructions. The driver downloaded and installed but the OLED screen still won't work. Any idea what might be going on? I certainly did not do so intentionally, but I'm pretty bad with UNIX so it's possible that it changed during the setup without my knowledge... I initially got an error message when running the commands you describe saying that I do not have permission to write to the /opt directory.
